In Colorado, police close Four unsolved murder cases and determine a long-dead serial killer’s identity using DNA from an exhumed body.
The four murders took place between the years 1978 to 1981. All the women were stabbed to death with an "underlying sexual component" to the attacks, according to Denver Police Commander Matt Clark.
In 2011, a detective was fortunate to get DNA from an empty glass tube that used to contain evidence. They didn’t have DNA testing during the time of the crimes, but the DNA found in the evidence container linked that murder to three other woman’s cases.
Using genetic genealogy, the police found a positive ancestor link in Texas. From there, they were able to use other relatives' DNA to eventually find a suspect, who was already dead.
Digging up his body, the DNA matched Joe Michael Ervin.
Joe Ervin died in June of 1981. He shot and killed Officer Debra Sue Corr when she pulled him over. He used Officer Corr’s own gun against her.
While in custody, Joel Michael Ervin took his own life after killing a total of 5 women that we know of.

Flirty Fishing is a form of evangelism by sexual intimacy practised from around 1974 to 1987 by the cult Children of God, currently known as Family International. Female members of Children of God would apply their sex appeal on men from outside the cult often having sex, using the occasion to proselytize for Jesus and seek donations. The practice was "a primary source of financial support and political protection" for the cult.
Children of God have defended it as a way of "bearing witness" for Jesus to people who would not otherwise be open to it.[2] According to some sources, over two hundred thousand men were "fished", and over 10,000 babies were born to cult women from 1971 and 2001. The practice was curtailed as sexually transmitted diseases spread through the cult, and then abandoned in 1987 reportedly because of the spread of AIDS.

April 2012, Mark Staudte died suddenly. He was cremated and his wife, Diane Staudte, collected his life insurance.
Five months later Staudte’s son Shaun also died suddenly. His body was just as quickly cremated. In June of 2013 Staudte’s daughter, Sarah was rushed to the hospital with brain and kidney failure.
Diane’s own pastor told investigators that Diane might have had something to do with her daughter’s illness as well as the deaths of her husband and son.
Staudte confessed to poisoning her family’s drinks with a “couple of teaspoons” of antifreeze because Mark was ‘abusive’ and Shaun, who was autistic, was ‘irritating’. Sarah was poisoned because she had too many college loans.
However, investigators found that daughter Rachel Staudte’s diary revealed that she and her mother both plotted the murders almost a year in advance. Rachel also confessed that her 12-year-old sister Brianna was probably next to die because Rachel didn’t want to take care of her.
Diane and Rachel Staudte both received life in prison.

Janet Chandler | Hotel Maid Murder
On January 31st, 1979 two residents of the Blue Mill Inn in Michigan, Robert Lynch, and James Nelson convinced hotel maid, Janet Chandler, to leave work in order to attend a surprise party being held in her honor.
Recently both Chandler's fellow hotel maids and the group of security guards who were staying at the Inn had become aware that Janet Chandler, had been having sex with multiple security guards, including the boyfriends of her coworkers. Both the maids and the security guards formed a plan to teach Chandler a lesson.
They took Chandler to the party where Lynch whipped his belt around Chandler's neck and forced her into a bedroom where he and the other security guards took turns sexually assaulting her until Lynch strangled her to death. The party's 25 attendees cheered the crime on as it happened. Her body was dumped in a snowbank and her murder went unsolved until a 2003 documentary led to the arrests of Robert Lynch, Laurie Swank, Carl Paiva, James Nelson, Freddy Parker, and Tony Williams.
