Wes Craven was one of the most profound horror movie directors in Hollywood. He pioneered the horror genre, mixing horror cliches with humor and satire. Craven gave audiences a scare to look forward to and wasn’t afraid to push the envelope to entertain movie goers.

Craven began is career in film as a sound editor before he started directoring films. Craven’s official directorial debut was the horror film The Last House on the Left in 1972.

In 1984 Craven had his breakout hit A Nightmare on Elm Street, which he wrote and directed. Craven introduced the world to the menacing humorous villain Freddy Krueger, who kills his victims by invading their dreams.

A Nightmare on Elm Street spun multiple sequels, television series, and a 2010 remake. Although Craven didn’t direct the sequels, he returned to the franchise to direct New Nightmare in 1994, casting himself and various cast members from the first film to play themselves in a story in which Krueger attempts to cross from film to reality.

Throughout the 1990’s Craven worked steadily in film and television but in 1996 he reached another career high with the success of Scream. Scream became a blockbuster hit known for its dark wit and references to other horror classics. As well as for the notable cast which included Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox.

During the 2000’s Craven directed Cursed in 2004, a jump into the werewolf genre, the thriller Red Eye in 2005, and the slasher movie My Soul to Take in 2010. The last film Craven directed was Scream 4 in 2011. He teamed up with Dimension film and the notable cast from the first Scream to reboot the beloved franchise.Scream 4 also cast young talent such as Emma Roberts and Hayden Pannetiere.

The impact Wes Craven has on the slasher horror genre doesn’t go unnoticed. From mixing horror with humor in Nightmare on Elm Street to reinventing the youth horror genre, Craven made his mark in Hollywood. Craven continues to inspire audiences with his bold storytelling and innovative horror.
