Instagram’s chief Adam Mosseri has once again stated that if you’re posting on Instagram, you need to be focusing on the power of the send. ( Which means content that is share worthy).

Mosseri followed up his recent update with advice on how to make your content share worthy. He outlined how more people now engage within DMs rather than with feed posts meaning less likes, comments and other behaviour we have traditionally relied upon. We need ideally and when possible, to think of content creation as the need to create something a friend would want to share with another friend.

Instagram has been testing this with a new sends display counts, that some users have had access to. It’s been tested for the last year and this now appears to be rolling out to more users.

Shares are driven by content that is inspiring, interesting, humorous, relatable or has facts or information someone might want to refer back to.

Meta is also keen to dilute politics and news content in their apps due to negative user feedback.

So will this lead to any changes in your content creation? Have you noticed the shift to shares and DMs rather than public behaviour? Let me know in the comments.

Are you switching off over Summer? It’s the never ending debate of if to plough on with your social media or just take the summer off. It can be incredibly difficult to run a business, arrange possible childcare, catch up with loved ones and just enjoy some much needed ☀️

The fact is- if you decide to switch off, social media will still be here waiting for you when you get back and your mental health is always more important than social media algorithms so you should make the decision that suits you!

However, thinking that social media is simply a wasteland over summer and the right time to down-tool because nobody is scrolling, can be a bit of a myth.

Over the summer, 55% of holidaymakers will spend 30-120 minutes a day on social media, meaning that downscaling ( or downtooling) based purely on the fact it’s summer could be a mistake.

If you would like to know your social media is planned and prepped by me as a social media manager for your next major holiday, and avoid the stress of debating about down- tooling, get in touch and arrange a discovery call.

So as a new week starts, we have a brand new government, and I look forward to the promised changes.

The list of things, I would love to see changed, are far too vast for one post. For my industry, I can only hope, the future holds further changes, when it comes to social media. At the moment, I don’t think social media platforms are held accountable enough for the content posted. Certainly, I don’t feel the reporting of content is robust enough. ( Just this morning I tried to report a racist emoji used on a post and it didn’t fit any of their report categories).
The biggest change, I would like to see, is the accountability of social media platforms and its duty of care for children and teens. I could write an essay on the things I would want to change about social media from encryption, age of children allowed to sign up for accounts, the checks made on people’s age, parental settings, image checking, algorithm changes, content moderation, disappearing messages etc etc. My experience as a social media manager, a former teacher and as a parent of teens has left me despairing over social media again and again! There’s no doubt in my mind that more needs to be done and changes are desperately required!

What changes are you hoping the new government brings for you, your industry and your business?

Way ( way) back in university I studied the book Generation x by Douglas Coupland, as part of my course. Up until then I don’t think I had ever really considered what generation I belonged to…in 2024, in comparison, you can’t escape generational divides, millennials, boomers and Gen z are part of everyday language.

Facebook is often seen as a platforms that is for boomers, when I talk to people, Instagram to millennials and those younger and Tik Tok for Gen Z.

When it comes to users and downloads Meta’s Apps ( Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are the most popular currently when it comes to downloads.

Instagram was the most downloaded app in the first quarter of 2024, followed by TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

X ( still always Twitter to some) is languishing at the 25th place below Messenger and Threads in the Top Free apps downloads.

Does this surprise you? What generations do you associate with the different apps?

As an aside, give me a shout if you read Generation X.

Went back to the 80s this Saturday at Camp and Furnace, Liverpool. A time when algorithms and TikToks would have been harder to imagine than flying cars and those Glastonbury lives, stories and photos filling your feed, just didn’t exist. ( I have not one photo from Glastonbury in the early 2000s!🤣)

Are you a business over on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn’s new Premium Company Pages is a subscription service for those with a business page.

Subscribers will have access to features such as custom CTA ( Call To Action) buttons, the ability to automatically invite people who have engaged with your company Page or content, further insights into your Page visitors, the ability to display testimonials and access to AI writing assistance.

The service will give you the ability to display reviews directly on your business profile, in a new section called “Services Showcase.”

The “Request Services” custom button will also be a new feature intended to help your business generate leads. Premium Business will allow for unlimited search, with A.I assistance that will help draft messages to those potential customers.

This option should be available to everyone globally by the end of July. Is it something you would be interested in using?

How are you coping with working in the heat?

The new cute apprentice has been working hard on the heat, this morning, nearly resetting passwords due to sitting on keyboards. He’s also ensured I am incredibly hot by sitting on me like a big extra hot water bottle.

He is a great time keeper though who sat outside the office at 9am absolutely outraged I wasn’t in there yet working! 🤣

Instagram is set to allow you to post carousels featuring photos of different sizes. Although none of my accounts seem to allow this yet it will be something that comes in very handy.

You no longer need to only post square photos on Instagram with options for sizing your photos:
“Original” portrait” and “Square.”

Is this a feature you have now and is it something you will find useful?

It’s National Selfie Day and here’s your reminder that it’s good to share the face behind your brand and small business.

When it comes to the subject of us showing our faces on photos, it all tends to get a bit complicated, doesn’t it? People often worry that sharing a photo of yourself shows vanity and by sharing your own photo, you are saying to the world you think you look gorgeous and that’s what puts so many of us off sharing! In reality you are sharing yourself and who is running your business, your presenting the very real person behind the business and that’s it!

If you’re in a customer facing role, I’m sure you don’t shy away from meeting customers no matter what you look like, and your social media presence should be no different.

People like to connect with other people so be it brand photography or a simple selfie- make today a day when you show the face behind the brand!

So we’ve had a Taylor inspired last couple of months, after not scoring Taylor Swift tickets. A Taylor Swift birthday party and a look around Taylor Town in Liverpool last week. ( Although I tend not to post my little Swiftie so you will have to look at me! 😜🤣)

Taylor is literally everywhere and her team are marketing genius when it comes to Taylor merchandise and hype. Swifties just don’t seem to reach saturation point and keep wanting more. While small businesses do not have Taylor Swift’s marketing budget- it does remind us of the power of customer retention. Many Swifties have remained loyal to Taylor Swift for years and have grown with her as her music has grown. She treats her fans with respect and knows her own audience well and how to consistently deliver what they want, something even the smallest of business can aim for by ensuring they know their target audience and create content tailored to them.

Let me know what you think of the Swifties and if you managed to get to her gigs. ⬇️

A little glimpse into my office and the place I work. It’s the only bit of pink in a house that’s mostly green or blue and I’m tempted to go a little pinker because it’s a colour that really cheers you up!

So while I can do a lot of my work on my phone and from anywhere really, I do the majority of my scheduling, writing copy and content creation on a laptop as I like to see the full screen. Something I read the other day is something only Millennials and Gen X like to do and younger people just prefer working from a phone, which I thought probably couldn’t be entirely true, when it comes to working from home. So let me know your generation and how you work.

This is also the view you are getting if I’m teaching you social media skills, as I did this morning with a session on Brand Voice.

“Social media isn’t hard!” “Anyone can post a picture!” “Teens are better at it, they grew up with social media!”

I’ve heard all the above comments and more when it comes to managing social media. So why would you pay for a social media manager?

Well there’s a lot more thought that goes into it than just posting a photo and while teenagers, influencers and just about everyone you know post on Social media- that’s a lot different to managing social media. A teen trained in social media management can be fabulous and so can anyone of any age- it’s the training that makes the difference!

Today, I posted a picture of a cat and a blurry photo of an event I attended- on my personal feed, would I post that content on a client’s feed? -well, absolutely not, I post only with strategy and intent not on a whim!

So why consider me as your social media manager?

Quite simply, if you’re trying to scale your business your time is better spent on building that business and not your social media.

If you hate and dread posting you are better off handing over responsibility and focusing on another aspect of your business.
It’s simply outsourcing in the same way we do daily with tradespeople, hairdressers, accountants, cleaners, mechanics and so on!

I have clients both locally and nationally and can work with you no matter where you are based.

I will take time out to understand you and your business and if we are not a good fit, I will let you know, I don’t want a client I don’t work well with any more than you want a social media manager who doesn’t understand your vision.

I now have spaces opening up for social media management due to a project ending. If you would like to talk to me about social media management then get in touch.

If you have been following the absolute drama of the Coop Live fiasco you may have seen all the uproar tonight when a gig was cancelled with people there…as someone with teenagers I’ve been keenly watching this story and hoping Olivia Rodrigo was not cancelled!

She now is and I’ve yet to break the news to my teen as he’s in bed but there will be a lot of teens like him disappointed tonight….. After my initial disappointment and reading and following of all the drama…in true social media manager style my next thought was for the social media team at Coop Live and how I’m very very glad I am not working for them right now!

Has anyone else fallen victim to the cancelling Coop Live ticket drama?

Does anyone else get the absolute ick from the messy story options in Instagram?

I much prefer the older version ( that my account still has) to the messy churned out mess that reminds me of 90s magazines and how a year 7 might design them ( on all my client’s accounts.)

Which do you prefer?

Back in June someone posted this in this group, and my sister’s friend screenshot it and sent it to my sister and said this looks just like Jenny!!
Well, I tried and tried to call the place with no answer. I left messages.
As a creator on TikTok I used that platform to reach any fans that might be in the area. Nothing.
Last week someone finally commented that lived in the town of Spruce Pine, NC and she said she was going thrifting if I still wanted it.
Fast forward- she found it and bought it and shipped it to me! So sweet of her!
I’m going to hang it up so everyone can see my disapproval of whatever they’re thinking about doing. 😂😅

Great post from Aldi UK, their posts all have a strong sense of fun, brand voice and are current, on trend and slightly tongue in cheek. Finding your own brand voice and what works for you and your clients rather than trying to emulate someone else ( or your competitor) is so important when it comes to your online presence!

A statement from Aldi Admin.

It's Safer Internet Day and I could write a load of blurb about what I do as a social media manager, tutor and mum of tweens and teens to keep us all healthy and safe...but here's the thing. I try my best but I'm human, I'm infallible (as are we all) and actually rather than focus on me, I would like to call out the big tech companies and mobile phone companies I rely on to work daily and see them:

Enhance Privacy Protections: Prioritise enhancing privacy protections for users, especially young ones. This can include implementing stronger default privacy settings, providing clearer explanations of data collection practices, and giving users more control over their personal information.

Combat Online Harassment and Bullying: Invest in advanced moderation tools, employ algorithms to detect and remove harmful content swiftly, and provide users with easy reporting mechanisms. It's so important that monitoring picks up the nuances of everyday language and not just key words and that probably involves using some humans.

Empower Parents and Guardians: As I mentioned the other day social media apps do NOT work in conjunction with phone parental settings and parents can think they have settings on but they do not work in WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok etc. More parental control features allow for monitoring and restricting content, setting time limits on device usage, and the apps themselves monitoring user's ages and exposure to inappropriate content including messages.

What would you like to see the big companies do?

Partners take note….absolutely nobody wants a Valentine’s Day gift from this selection, I spotted, ( and I’m still unsure if the cleaning products are included! 😂🤣🤣)

If there is anyone who would like one of these gifts do make yourself known in the comments!🤪🤪

This February, expect to see feeds full of Valentine’s Day offers, nails with hearts, hair and beauty offers, card, gift and flower offers and of course hotels and restaurants!

If you’re posting an offer this month remember that posting a # with your Valentine’s Day is banned by Instagram so you may find nobody ( except potentially followers ) sees your post.

Meta don’t create lists of banned hashtags because they hate love ( as far as I know🤪) but certain hashtags can be used by fake accounts bots and become spam!

Did you know this was a banned hashtag? What February offers are you running?

Does your tween or teen use WhatsApp?

Most kids with their first phone these days appear to have WhatsApp but are you aware of changes to WhatsApp over the years and what that might mean?

➡️Firstly age rating- a lot of parents think WhatsApp has a 13 age rating but since April 2018 WhatsApp has had a rating of 16, as a response to data-protection legislation.

➡️Tweens don’t necessarily use WhatsApp the way boring middle aged women like me use it- my status has been the same since I first installed WhatsApp, many tweens update theirs to their followers ( depending on their settings) including using photos and videos. If they choose to not show this to their parents you might not even be aware that they are updating regularly.

➡️Settings- there are some good privacy settings on WhatsApp that can protect your privacy if your kids are savvy- as a parent however though you can’t control them changing all the settings as they are not controlled in phone settings just in the app itself so you may not even realise the settings your child has changed the app to.

➡️IPhone features or parental apps monitoring content for under 18 won’t work on WhatsApp- so if you have turned on restrictions for certain things, ( explicit photos or blocking over 18 content) it’s worth checking if they are actually going to work on WhatsApp as it will not monitor the content.

➡️Locked chats- did you know you can now lock a chat? This means it is kept separately and you won’t necessarily see it even if you look at your child’s phone.

➡️Disappearing messages mean you may not see content that disappears in 24 hours, 7 days or whatever setting is used!

➡️Group chats- the pull of the group chat is strong with tweens but you might need to remind your tween that the year 7 group chat for the year means every person on there has access to their number and can contact them. Even if your child doesn’t want to be in the chat, friends adding them to endless chats means they might be worried about leaving the chat. Big group chats can sometimes mean more arguing and more underlying issues . You might need to remind your tween to keep to smaller friendlier chats if possible.

I finally got round to going and seeing “photie Man” exhibition in Liverpool recently.

‘Photie Man’ celebrates the internationally-acclaimed Irish artist Tom Wood and his iconic images of Liverpool and ( more importantly for me) Wallasey, which is my home town and was also hometown to Tom Woods for some time.

I’ve admired Tom’s photos for many years and was great to see this retrospective look at his life’s work…and to see if we could spot people we knew ( we did!)

What was the last exhibition you enjoyed?

Why buying likes and followers on Insta is both obvious and a bad idea.

You don’t need to be a social media manager to spot when an account has fake followers or likes, it’s pretty obvious….if there are a number of grey profile pictures, accounts that have 0 posts and a large number of accounts not in your country- they are likely to be bots/fake accounts. Think about your industry and your geography- is it likely if you’re a small independent retailer in Manchester, you received 500 likes from somewhere halfway across the globe?

The number of eyes 👀on your account is also an indication ( if you have had 100 total views and 500 people like your video it seems a bit strange even to someone who is not Insta savvy)

Buying likes and followers is not a good look if you’re a brand that needs to build trust, promote authenticity and be seen as honest!

Buying likes and followers also sends a poor signal to the Instagram algorithm. There are six primary factors the algorithm uses to determine which posts to show. These factors are relationship, interest, recency, frequency, usage and following.

So, Instagram is deciding how much a particular user will likely care about your post and you are screwing with your own metrics. If you buy fake likes but have no comments or other follower activity, the algorithm can easily detect the mismatch in metrics. Over time, buying fake likes can backfire and work against the algorithm, making your content less visible to relevant audiences.

You could permanently lose your entire Instagram account-
Instagram doesn’t want people buying fake likes and followers. As far back as 2018, the company started taking strict action against accounts involved in this practice.

…and there are of course those that “gift” likes and followers you don’t want, if an account sends you a message offering this without you wanting this, block and report because you don’t want to lose access to your account through a ban!

Have you spotted this practise on Insta?

Ever thought of targeting a nine - ender?

An article by has focused on 4 ways to use behavioural science to improve the effectiveness of mail, including targeting nine-enders.

If the term "nine-enders" leaves you scratching your head, it's a term invented by a New York University professor, Adam Alter, to describe people whose age ends in nine .
Alter found that this group is particularly open to changing their behaviour.
He argues that our culture disproportionately values changes at the start of each decade, meaning the significance of turning 40 is much greater than that of turning 43, for example.

Maybe you want to inspire people to quit smoking, try a new experience for the first time, or take a luxury once in a lifetime holiday - why not target nine enders?

Meet “The Social Eye”

My name is Lorna Rimmer and I am the face and the name behind The Social Eye. After training with Digital Mums, I successfully graduated with a ‘Diploma in Strategic Social Media Marketing’.

I am eager to help businesses create their brand presence and achieve their goals. My process is to work closely with a client, to define your social media goal, understand your brand and help your social media platforms succeed.

Social media is key, in order to have an online presence, that reaches your clients/customers. The most important aspect of social media management, for me, is the word "social", your relationship with your clients and customers online is intimate, the same annoyance and frustration we feel towards automated calls and tills, is felt even more so on fast paced social. People are on social media, to be social - not to have old school advertisements and outdated sales tactics tacked on to their social experience, they expect answers to questions quickly and by a human representing the brand!! Talk to me today about how I can support your growth, free your time, to allow you to focus on your business, and put you on a solid track to a successful online presence.
