A shy little squishy peeks out from a hidey-shell, where it hid from the photographer 🐙

Some species of octopus, like this coconut octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) find, clean and carry shells or other objects around with them as they forage on the sand or mud of the open sea floor for shrimp, crabs, clams or small fish. They shove themselves inside these cases to protect their soft bodies at the first sign of potential danger.

This requires both intelligence to anticipate and plan and dexterity to carry and assemble the shells, very impressive!

This image was highly commended in National History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Bats growl at each other like death metal singers 😠🦇🎶🥁

Bats have a tremendous vocal range of about 7 octaves, from 1 to 120 kilohertz! Most mammals have a range of 3 to 4 octaves, so this really is impressive.

Higher frequency bat calls are used for echolocation, whereas lower frequency cries are how bats talk to each other. To make these lower pitched growling calls bats use structures in their throat, called ventricular folds, just like death metal and Tuvan throat singers do!
