Government says the citizenry should wait for three more weeks to fix the hacked passport issuing system at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.

Addressing the media in Lilongwe this afternoon Homeland Security minister Ken Zikhale Ng'oma said people behind the hacking are demanding K2 billion from government but they will not pay the ransom as they are already working on the problem.

Ng'oma asked Malawians to exercise patience as the 90 percent of work to restore the system has so far been done.

Immigration Department director general Brigadier (retired) Charles Kalumo acknowledged that this is a national crisis and they are actively addressing the issue.

The passport production challenges began in 2021 after the government terminated its contract with Techno Brain for alleged poor handling of the contract by the previous administration.

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) says it will this year start offering full scholarships to over 100 needy and outstanding students through its Endowment Fund investment, which has grown to K3.4 billion from 2021.

MUST Vice chancellor, Professor Address Malata, said the institution has embraced Umunthu philosophy to put value on the poor students and change the common higher learning trajectory of relying on government subversions.

She said this today when Standard Bank made a third donation into the university's fund of K20 million, which added up to its K80 million pledge.

The bank's head of business and commercial banking, Graham Chipande, said they value education support because they are benefiting from the top-notch MUST graduates.

Bishop William Mchombo has been elected as Anglican Bishop of the diocese of Upper shire.

A letter from Reverend Cannon Grant Timpunza Tebulo states that the election was held today in Lusaka, Zambia.

The seat has been vacant since Bishop Emeritus Briton Vita Malasa was excommunicated from the church.

Over 1,000 households in Blantyre and Lilongwe districts will be spared from hunger this year despite the prolonged dry spells facing the country, owing to the adoption of organic (Mfufuza) farming.

For three years, the Waste Advisers in collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (CEPA) had been implementing the EU-funded Promoting Organic Systems of Soil Improvement to Build a Lasting Economy-POSSIBLE project in the districts.

Speaking today after a peer to peer visit, Chairperson for Chiswe Fufuza group in the area of Traditional Authority Machinjiri, Joseph Chikanga, attested that they are expected to realize bumper yields after adopting Mfufuza farming and applying compost manure in their fields.

Waste Advisers project manager, Sterah Jere, the initiative is aimed at promoting organic food systems which restore the degraded soil health in the country.

Meanwhile, Assistant Agricultural Extension Development Coordinator for Ntonda EPA, Clara Makanjira, said they will replicate the gains to other areas in the district.

Organizers of Kumingoli Bash have announced headliners and other artists that have made it for this year's event.

Chief Executive Officer Shadreck Kalukusha made the announcement this evening at a cocktail party in Lilongwe.

Kalukusha has said they are striving to make Kumingoli Bash an international event, and that they intend to achieve this feat through a five-month campaign that will see fifteen billboards in all cities, and use social influencers to promote the bash.

Kumingoli has partnered companies including Centenary Bank, Techno, Betway and G4S among the sponsors, and the artists lined up include Tay Grin, Zeze Kingstone, Pop Young, Temwa and Gibo Pearson, with more announcements to be announced later.

The parish priest for Adolorata Catholic Church in Thyolo, Father Marko Makolo, has urged Malawians to befriend the environment and care for it to avert natural disasters.

Father Makolo, while quoting Pope Francis' 'Laudato Si' letter of caring for the common home, cautioned that the continued destruction of nature will force it to turn against mankind.

The priest said this today when Adolorata Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) planted 100 seedlings, which were donated by the Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM).

The school's headteacher, Andson Ching'anda, and Wildlife Club patron, Steve Chilomo, have assured that strategies are in place to care for the trees to ensure a desirable survival rate.

A medical report indicates that Elasto Ngonyani, a 35-year-old truck driver who was beaten by Mozambique police at Zobue, may face challenges working in the future due to sustained injuries.

The report from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital reveals lumbar sliding disc loin pain on the right side, scalp lacerations on the head, pain in the right knee, and pain in the left ankle with a few lacerations.

The victim currently experiences severe headaches, general body pains, chest pains, shortness of breath, and numbness of the feet resulting from the assault.

Ngonyani urges the Malawi government to employ diplomatic means to end police brutality on Mozambican roads, especially towards foreigners.

Happy Saka, Malawi's Consul General for Tete and Zambezia provinces in Mozambique, says talks are underway, and authorities have assured them they will address the issue appropriately.

One of the defence lawyers in a corruption case former Minister of energy Newton Kambala and two others are answering has alleged in court today in Lilongwe that a phone which state witness surrendered to ACB was tampered with at the bureau.

Wapona Kita who is representing former chief presidential advisor on strategy Chris Chaima Banda, during cross examination of Hellen Buluma said among others, the phone indicates there is a call made in 2022 when Buluma's phone was surrendered to ACB in 2021.

Cross examination of the state witness, former National Oil Company of Malawi acting Chief Executive Officer will continue tomorrow at 8am.

Kambala, Chaima Banda and AFORD President Enoch Chihana were arrested by ACB in 2021 for allegedly trying to influence fuel importation deals at NOCMA. The three are out on court bail.

Chief resident magistrate Madalitso Chimwaza is hearing the case.

The Thyolo District Council has been forced to distribute relief maize to the hunger-stricken communities on the same day of dispatch as a measure to curb theft and misappropriation.

This comes after five people were arrested for allegedly stealing bags of maize at Bvumbwe headquarters, including reports that some people sold bags of maize to vendors at Mbandanga and Khonjeni distribution centers three days ago.

Meanwhile, Thyolo district commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga, said they have now engaged the police and all the maize will be distributed on the spot, cautioning that anyone found selling the government maize will be taken to task.

At least 52,222 households are receiving maize in the district in response to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report, which projected that 4.4 million Malawians are facing hunger this lean period.

Police in Zomba are keeping in custody two women for attempting to sneak in 68 SIM cards into Zomba Central Prison hidden in bananas.

Deputy police spokesperson for Zomba police station, Aaron Chilala, told Zodiak Online that the two, Eliza Ali and Jean Ngombe, wanted to see an incarcerated brother when officers discovered the SIM cards upon normal checking.

Chilala says the two will appear in court soon to answer the charge of introducing prohibited articles into prison.

Zomba Central Prison is a beehive of telephone call-related crimes by prisoners.
