"It was a collective fear," says Flor Ramirez, recalling the time when her family lived with the constant threat of deportation. “My biggest fear was that my children would be separated.”

Now a community navigator with Arise Chicago, Flor fights for immigrant workers’ rights, helping them understand their protections and empowering them to stand up against workplace injustices. Through her own experience, Flor provides crucial support for others facing similar fears and vulnerabilities.

Just two days after Donald Trump was elected president in Nov. 2016, mental health advocates in Chicago gathered to discuss concerns about the election’s impact on immigrants’ mental health. Fast forward eight years, and those fears are exploding all over again.

This story is part two in Silent Battles, our new reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S with NAHJ: palabra. This series was made possible with support from The Field Foundation of Illinois.

The potential return to power of Donald Trump is creating intense fear and anxiety among immigrants fearing deportation and violence.

Earlier this month, the Chicago bureau of MindSite News and NAHJ: palabra. released a new series, Silent Battles, a reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S. We begin in Chicago, a city founded by a Haitian immigrant that has the fourth-largest immigrant population in the country.

In this video we hear from the reporter on the project, Alma Campos, and share a clip from Reimagining Mental Health Supports for Migrant Arrivals in Chicago, an initiative that trains shelter workers and other front-line staff on trauma-informed care.

This series is made possible with funding from the The Field Foundation of Illinois. Read the full report: https://buff.ly/4dNz8vV

Comments from our founder Rob Waters were featured in this recent opinion article from The Philadelphia Inquirer. The piece takes a look at Donald Trump’s stigmatizing language about mental illness throughout his campaign.

“People with mental health conditions have been campaigning for years against the social stigma directed against them — and in recent years have made a lot of progress. Donald Trump seems to be on a one-man campaign to bring back that kind of stigma.” - Rob Waters, MindSite News founder

Trump calls anyone who opposes him mentally ill, reflecting his warped approach to a major issue. How much is projection?

"I could NOT focus. I would catch myself looking around and not on the road, messing with the radio, just doing anything but paying attention to the road ahead of me."

In this first person story, we hear from Hannah Henderson and how medication helped her to pay attention to the road while driving. This story is part of a package by Youthcast Media Group.

Teen driver Hannah Henderson, who has attention deficit disorder, says medication helped her focus on the road.

This week the Chicago bureau of MindSite News and NAHJ: palabra. released a new series, Silent Battles, a reporting project focusing on the mental health of immigrant, refugee and asylum communities in the U.S. We begin in Chicago, to hear how one of the country's most diverse cities is helping migrants build a new life and hear from immigrants navigating trauma and mental health in the United States.

This series is made possible with funding from the The Field Foundation of Illinois.

Many immigrants suffer from trauma from the persecution they fled and the perilous journey to the states. The city of Chicago wants to help.

Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, who crash vehicles at a higher rate
of any age group. But hidden within the numbers is a critical but often overlooked subgroup: Teens with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) – who are more than twice as likely to be involved in multiple car crashes.

Getting distracted, impulsivity, poor judgment and thrill-seeking tend to appear more often in drvers with the disorder.

“We lost everything, we left barefoot, in our pajamas.” – Maria Suares

Many migrants suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression – usually undiagnosed – and it can be nearly impossible for them to get services or treatment for their trauma, says psychologist Kiara Álvarez, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. And some also avoid talking about mental health issues because of shame, stigma or cultural barriers. Still, she said, trauma has a way of rising to the surface.

“They start having bad dreams. They start having bad sleep – nightmares, stomach aches, feelings of being nervous,” Álvarez explained.

We exposed the abuses of the troubled teen industry.
We've shown the harms of social media on young people.

But we've also captured how middle and high schoolers are organizing to support each other.
And how districts are innovating to ease stress on kids.
