Happy international women’s day everyone 💪

On 8th of March each year, we celebrate the achievements of women and rise awareness for the inequality that’s still an everyday challenge for many of us.

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all .
Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.” ( )

Beyond New Years resolutions! (By Katja)

Attention all who want to set goals for the New Year but tend to forget about them at some point. I found an amazing resource by a volunteer movement to help us plan better! Yes, I’m definitely that person too. But no worries, we’re not alone. My quick Google search told me people abandon more than have of their New Year’s resolutions after the first month.

Here are few reasons why it may not work and at the end, you’ll find a link to a booklet that will help you reflect on your past year to help you plan for the next year.

1. We can’t set realistic goals that don’t correspond to our values. Values are not “shoulds” - “I should run every morning”. These “shoulds” usually come from societal pressure and often become our goals, not because they are important to us, but because we have formed a belief around them that doing so will make us a better person.

2. Most goals shouldn’t be a destination, but a journey of behaviors. You will get better results if you focus on process goals instead of outcome goals. It’s important to create goals based on actions that YOU can control!

3. We measure the wrong things. Are you sure losing some weight is going to make you happy or is it just an easier thing to achieve that confronting your anxiety?

Go to: yearcompass.com to reflect on your past year and set goals for the new year mindfully (50+ languages available!)

Hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää! 🇫🇮🎉

While in most Christian counties, the 6th of December is know as the St.Nikolaus day, Finland is celebrating Independence Day. On 6th of December 1917, Finland declared its independence from over 100 years of Russian occupation. This was Finland’s first independence after it had been part of the Kingdom of Sweden from the 13th century and the Russian empire since 1809.

As a multicultural family, we celebrate this day twice. In the morning we empty our shoes full of goodies, filled by St.Nikolaus during the night and in the afternoon we light a blue and white candle and take a walk in the beautiful Finnish nature ❤️

Hyvää Juhannusta! 🌸 Happy Midsummer!

As a multi-cultural kid who grew up in Finland, I was always slightly conflicted about the right way to celebrate Midsummer.

I believed you needed a cottage & it had to be on the weekend. (As you do in Finland)

I also knew for a fact that Midsummer is on the 24th of June (which isn’t always the weekend) & that nothing’s as fun as gathering in a festival-like atmosphere to celebrated Midsummer with a huge crowd of people. (As we did in Estonia)

I then moved to Austria and was introduced to the most beautiful Midsummer tradition. There, small lanterns made of eggshells are put to flow on the Danube creating the most mesmerizing sight. I was also invited to a fancy dinner at a fancy restaurant, which made me realize that Midsummer celebration doesn’t always need to be all that “pagan”.

I’m glad my Midsummers haven’t always been the same, but once in a while it’s nice to stick to tradition.

This year, we’re doing it the true Finnish way - at the cottage, by the lake, swimming, eating, relaxing & lighting a bonfire!

How do you celebrate Midsummer? What are your Midsummer traditions?

What did you eat this Easter?

As an expat you’re always learning about new traditions and mixing them up with your own. This is especially true when it comes to food. Some, you embrace with an open heart while others you’d rather limit to a minimum.

Here’s a list of traditional Finnish Easter food. Which ones have you adopted into your own kitchen, and which ones would you rather not have at your Easter table?

✅ Blood sausage

✅ Freshly baked bread

✅ Lamb (on the picture)

✅ Easter eggs - boiled

✅ Easter eggs - chocolate

✅ Uunijuusto is a Finnish dish made from cow's colostrum, the first milk of a calved cow, by adding a pinch of salt and by baking the milk in an oven.

✅ Pasha is a custard dessert made of quark. It’s originates from Russia, where it can often be called P***a. So you might understand why the Finns changed name just a bit.

✅ Mämmi is a Finnish Easter dessert. It looks like a pudding, but isn’t very attractive, though. It’s texture is granular and it’s mixed with cream before consumption. Mämmi divides opinions and is one of those Finnish treats, like salmiakki. Finns love to see the expression on your face the first time you try it. You may love it, or you may not.

Which of these do you serve?

Happy Easter parents! It’s Easter Sunday and we’re in the middle of celebrating this big holiday in Finland. Like most holidays in Finland, Easter is a mix of religious and pagan elements and mostly revolves around family spending time together. Most prominently it celebrates the long-awaited arrival of spring.

Finns like to celebrate Easter, but not necessarily for its religious aspects.

First of all, it’s celebrated from Friday to Monday, which makes it a perfect four day mini-vacation. 😎💪

Second, it’s great fun for the kids, and for once parents don’t need to come up with creative ideas on how to keep their kids busy. There’s no other holiday in Finland that’s celebrated with so much DIY. Here’s a basic check list for Finnish Easter with kids:

✅ Planting, growing & decorating rye grass.

✅ Collecting & decorating willow twigs.

✅ Painting eggs.

✅ DIY chicks & other Easter home decor.

✅ Dressing up as witches on Palm Sunday (Eastern Finland) or Holy Saturday (Western Finland), going door to door, driving away evil spirits in return for treats.

Did your family check all these boxes?

NEW EPISODE OUT!!! 🎧

Tune in for another episode of our “pregnancy stories” series! In this episode, our guest Mareike is sharing her experience being pregnant in Finland. Mareike suffered from preeclampsia, aka pregnancy poisoning, in both of her pregnancies. She talks about the condition itself, how she was cared for and offers some tips to women on dealing with it.

Preeclampsia is a condition, which is still not fully understood. It can’t be prevented nor treated as such. The symptoms include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, pain in the upper stomach, water in the extremities, headache and nausea to name a few.

Ultimately it might lead to kidney failure, water in the lungs and other serious issues for the mom.

The condition also bears risks for the baby, since it may prevent the baby from getting everything it needs to grow.

Talking about postpartum in stories today! ☝️☝️

The postpartum period is a sensitive time for a new mother. In a moment, her body, her mind and her life change completely. But the new baby cries for immediate attention, and new responsibilities fill up the day. So, the new body and mind aren’t priotitized. This can lead to serious problems. It’s important to give, both, the body and mind the care that they need to ensure a positive postpartum recovery. Though, as always, easier said that done. But here are three little things you can start with.

1. PLAN FOR YOUR POSTPARTUM
A bit of planning can save you a lot of stress and frustration during postpartum. Having everything ready at hand or knowing in advance whom to lean on will give you more time to rest and let you thrive with your baby.

2. REMEMBER YOURSELF
Treat yesourself, prioritize yourself, remember yourself, don’t forget that you exist beyond the baby. Get physical, move, hydrate, eat well, see friends or don’t see them, do what makes you happy. You do you!

3. SEEK HELP
Be real with your emotions. If you wonder whether you need help, you probably do. Don’t stay silent about what you may be going through. Seek help if you suspect that what you’re feeling is beyond baby blues.

See our stories today for more on postpartum and mental health, and join us tomorrow for our IG live with at 1pm Finnish time!

It is Minna Canth day today, Finland’s equality day.

Minna Canth was a Finnish writer back in the 19th century. She has influenced the Finnish history especially with her efforts on equality and education. That’s why her birthday, the 19th of March, is celebrated as the equality day in Finland.

What does that have to do with how we work?
Studies have shown that during the pandemic, women spent almost 50% more time per week for unpaid care work (especially caring for children) compared to men 🤷‍♀️
While fathers often worked from the office or a separate room, mothers were working while entertaining the kids if not even lost their jobs, took their yearly holidays or sick leave to care for the children.

No other year has shown how far away we still are from gender equality but also from equality between people of different color, origins and backgrounds (remembering especially death last year) and from equality for same s*x couples and parents in times of a huge political right drift in the world.

We still have lot’s to do but let’s remember that we all have our part in it and everyone of us can advocate for equality! Even if it doesn’t concern you directly!

It’s anti-racism week. Our community here consists mainly of expat and immigrant parents in Finland. While raising a child abroad and navigating an unfamiliar system is hard enough, dealing with racism is an entirely different challenge. Yet, it’s a harsh reality for many. A survey released in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations shows that people of African descent living in Finland experience racism and discrimination on a daily basis. Discrimination and harassment occur in all aspects of life - in public, in education facilities, at work, as well as social and health care services.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We want to both protect our children from racial discrimination and teach them acceptance, empathy, and equity. Here are three little things we can do:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Reflect on yourself. You are the example your child follows.
2. Educate yourself about race and racism.
3. Be honest with your kids about racism. Have open conversations considering their age.

NEW EPISODE OUT!!

The postpartum period begins right after childbirth. It is commonly defined as the six weeks after the delivery but can last longer. During this time, a woman goes through various physical and emotional changes, while recovering from labor and adjusting to a new family life with a baby.

A bit of planning can help with your recovery process, letting you thrive with a newborn. Being prepared will help you have a support network to lean on, reduce stress and frustration, and give you more time to rest.

In this week’s episode, we talk about how Finland supports women in their postpartum journey and what each of us can do to make our experience better.

On a scale from 1-5, how well does Finland support women in their postpartum recovery in your opinion?

What services do you think are vital?

Good morning! Here’s a positive fact about 2020 to start your day with!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Despite a steady decrease in birth rates over the past two decade, 2020 finally gave Finland more babies that the previous year! 46 452 babies were born in 2020, which is 839 more than in 2019!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Finland is considered a country with low birth rates. The number of births have decreased by about 1/4 during the 2010s.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The average age of first time moms has increased steadily over the years, as it has in all other Nordic countries. In Finland, the average age of a first time mom is 29,6 years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The reasons for the declining birth rate are the perceived uncertainly and the mental and financial responsibility associated with having children.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The proportion of adults without children is continuously increasing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
BUT in 2020, the number of babies born has started to rise again, for the first time in 10 years! Let’s see whether this trend continues.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Raise your hand if you gave birth in 2020!
