Good morning friends and followers! ☀️ Devon here! 👋🏾

I know I missed , but I wanna share this moment I had while telling my story to someone else. This bit of transparency and therapeutic use of self is for anyone on my Timeline dealing with suicidal ideation (SI) and depression today:

“See I used to say I never wanted to do psych….until I almost lost my own damn mind and almost killed my own damn self. I ain’t have nobody to rely on. I had to be my own therapist. So now I have a soft spot for SI and psych patients. I wanna be the advocate for them that I had to be for myself because I remember what it felt like to fight depression alone. And I’m here for them to not have to feel what I felt. I can help lead them out. You say you’re glad that I was strong, but it wasn’t until I realized just how much the world needed me that I could even begin to walk in that strength.

The day I made my su***de plan, I was at work and a man coded. I had just broken down in tears in the middle of the unit over my separation and impending divorce literally 60 seconds before that code alarm went off. I snapped out of it, wiped my face, and ran in that room and took over compressions. (Everytime I’ve touched a patient as a part of a code team we’ve gotten ROSC [return of spontaneous circulation], haven’t missed yet) We got him back. As I was walking out of his room I heard a still, small voice say, “You can’t take your life because your life was meant to save others.”

….Then I sat there thought about all the lives that would be lost if I wasn’t here to walk in my purpose. And then…I no longer had a plan.”

This is why Nursing means so much to me the way it does now.

So the ER physicians use this white board to teach new med students and residents. I like to stop and read the mini-lectures from time to time. Always learn something new.

But what pathophysiology were they talking about last night? 👀 Pac-Manitis?!?! 🤯🤣

Murses, help em out:

I need some advice on a situation. I just started on a cardiac unit that has recently begun to operate as a medsurg overflow unit. I was just hired as a student nurse technician and that the nurses would help train me. One nurse is very knowledgeable, but she cuts corners and lets me know when she is doing things that are not "by the book".

I had a paraplegic patient assigned to me one day. Although I was told he was paralyzed from the neck down in report but he wasn't. When I went in to see him, he complained to me about the care he had received. I professionally acknowledged his concern. Upon emptying his foley (indwelling catheter), I noticed that there was a lot of puss in the urine, so much that even with emptying the bag and smoothing out the kinks that were backing up for god knows how long, I noticed still a large amount of puss retained in the bag as well as draining through the catheter.

I informed the nurse at least 5 times throughout my 12 hr shift and she never assessed the issue. Immediately after I provided foley care, I informed her that there was a large amount of blood and yellowish-green puss present. She still never checked. Towards the end of the shift I provided foley care again and of course it was oozing puss and blood still because nothing had been addressed.

She walked in and I showed her my concerns. In front of the patient, she shrugged her shoulders and said "SO". What the heck should I do?

I know I need to advocate for the patient, but I just started on this unit. I'm afraid to be targeted because they'll label me a snitch. I'm so ready to quit because the patient care is so horrible here, especially for black patients. Please help.

Derrick and I were discussing this the other day:

Even though this is a platform spotlighting male nurses, we wouldn’t be anything without our female counterparts. The team is looking to add a strong woman to the ranks to help keep us well-balanced. Reach out to us if you’re interested in working alongside us to grow our vision.

🚨MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

The journey through nursing school and pursuing my dream of working in the medical field has been the most pivotal moment of my life. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many people, making so many connections, being poured into as a man, and gaining so many new experiences and ideas.

Nursing is one of those fields where you can experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows all in one 12 hour shift. It’s a field dominated by some of the strongest women I’ve ever met. I can’t think of a greater honor than to be a male nurse along side these women. Being a male in a female-dominated field is it’s own unique experience. Memoirs of a Murse - Nursing From The Male Perspective is an idea I cultivated to create a platform for Murses, the minorities of the Nursing World, to tell their stories. It’s a space where we can laugh, cry, teach, grow, and pull up the next generation of Murses behind us! Derrick Merriweather Sr. and myself will be co-hosting this podcast to discuss all things “Mursing”!

So tag a Murse, share this post, and follow our page to stay informed with news and developments related to our project!!!
