The Inspiration behind the majestic national costume of Miss Universe Philippines Iloilo City 2021

I wear my roots.

The writings on my national costume project the revolutionary works of Ilonggo orator and writer Graciano Lopez Jaena, who founded La Solidaridad. He fought for the fundamental freedom of speech and stood up for equality which I emulate in my advocacy for women empowerment.

I embrace transformation.

This national costume is a modern take on the traditional terno, inspired by the classic gown of the first Philippine Carnival Queen from Iloilo, Pura Villanueva Kalaw. The embellishments are handcrafted to depict the pillars of Molo Church and handbeaded with acrylic stones to paint how Jose Rizal described it as “La Iglesia Bonita” or “A Beautiful Church.”

I embody charity.

The headdress is a handcrafted metal accented with stones and crystals to mirror the laser printed faces on my costume showcasing some of Iloilo’s inspiring and empowered women whose acts of selflessness brought Iloilo to where it is now--- Pura Kalaw, Teresa Magbanua, Patrocino Gamboa, Miriam Defensor Santiago, and Josette Biyo.

Roots. Transformation. Charity.
All rooted in love. And that is who I am.

PASSI CITY - Arestado sang 19 anyos nga lalaki matapos ginhimuslan ang menor de edad nga tupad balay sa Passi City.

Ang arestado amo si alyas Jess samtang ang biktima naman amo si alyas Nene, 8 ka tuig.

Sa exclusive interview sang Bombo Radyo kay Police Lt. Col. Dennis Pamonag, hepe sang Passi City Police Station, iya ginpahayag nga natabo ang pagpanghimulos sang tinalikdan nga tu-ig.

Preso sa Passi City Police Station si Alyas Jess kag natalanan nga dal-on sa Municipal Trial Court sa Dumangas, Iloilo.

Nagapangatubang sang kaso nga paglapas sa Republic Act 8353 ukon Anti-Rape Law of 1997 ang suspek.

RABIYA OCCEÑA MATEO

Representing Iloilo City, Rabiya Occeña Mateo, 24, was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2020 at the Cordillera Convention Hall of Baguio Country Club in Baguio City, Philippines on October 25, 2020. The licensed physical therapist and education advocate bested 45 other candidates.

Runners-up to Mateo was Maria Ysabella Roxas Ysmael, 24, of Parañaque City. The respective second, third and fourth runners-up were Michele Theresa Imperial Gumabao, 28, of Quezon City, Pauline Cucharo Amelinckx, 24, of Bohol and Kimberly “Billie” P. Hakenson, 26, of Cavite.

The Miss Universe Philippines 2020 coronation ceremony was hosted by KC Montero. It was held with no physical audience in the venue due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In the final question-and-answer portion, the Top 5 finalists were given two questions each. Mateo’s first question was, “If you could create a new paper currency with the image of any Filipino on it, dead or alive, who would it be and why?”

“If I were given the chance, I would want to use the face of Miriam Defensor-Santiago,” Mateo answered. “For those who don’t know, she was an Ilongga but what I admire about her is that she used her knowledge, her voice to serve the country and I want to be somebody like her, somebody who puts her heart, her passion into action and after all, she is the best president that we never had.”

The second question was asked to all of the Top 5 finalists. Montero asked, “This pandemic has made clear our priorities, essential and non-essential. Where do pageants stand in this time of crisis?”

“As a candidate I know I’m not just the face of Iloilo City but I am here carrying hope and as a symbol of light in the darkest times and as of the moment, I want to help my community,” Mateo answered. “I want to use my strength to make an impact and that is the essence of beauty pageants. It gives us the power to make a difference.”

Hailing from Balasan, Iloilo, Philippines, Mateo is half-Filipino, half-Indian and was raised by a single mother. She graduated cm laude from Iloilo Doctor’s College in Molo, Iloilo City.

On January 23, 2020, Mateo was crowned Miss Iloilo Universe 2020 at the West Visayas State University (WVSU) in Iloilo City. During the preliminary round of Miss Universe Philippines 2020 on October 23, 2020, she won Best in Swimsuit.

Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon and Miss Universe 2013 third runner-up Ariella Arida served as judges. They were joined by Philippine Fashion Coalition president Jackie C. Aquino, Frontrow co-founder and CEO Samuel Salonga Verzosa Jr., ACT-CIS representative Eric Yap, Raymond delos Santos, IPG Mediabrands Philippines CEO Venus Navalta, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Baguio City first lady Arlene Magalong and Procter & Gamble group director for media Arthur Peña.

Frontrow was the official presenter of Miss Universe Philippines 2020 along with Creamsilk, Olay, Lazada and Downy as co-presenters. The beauty pageant was supported by major sponsors Ginebra, Cetaphil, Morris Garage (MG) Philippines, Huawei, Villarica, PLDT, Grab, Havaianas, Byaheng Busog, St. Luke’s Medical Center, Nix Institute of Beauty, Marqed Salon, Glam, Artist Management and Events (GAME), Empire Studios, Petron, Beauche, The Manila Hotel, Verzosa Aesthetic Clinic and Baguio County Club.

Ginpilit ni Trade secretary Ramon Lopez nga iligal kag wala ginapahanugutan sa idalum sang laye ang “barter trade” sa Pilipinas ,apisar nga ginapahanugutan ini sa pila ka bahin sang Mindanao katulad sang Sulu kag Tawi tawi.

Suno kay Lopez ,dapat nga magaagi sa regular transactions ang “online trade” kag magabayad sang taxes.

Sa barter trade, direkta nga nagapatigayon sang transaksyon ang mga patrisipante sa diin ginapatigayon ang pagbaylohanay sang “goods” okon serbisyo nga wala sang imbolbado nga kuarta okon kantidad.

Atty. Enrique dela Cruz, law professor, on the denial of ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal:

“Another remedy is people’s initiative.

The people can directly enact a national law granting abs-cbn a franchise.

In 1989, Congress passed a “people’s initiative” law (Republic Act No. 6735) with the primary intention of providing a procedure for the Filipino people to directly pass national laws that Congress is unwilling to pass.

For people to initiate the passage of a national legislation, the draft law must be signed by at least 10 percent of our country’s total voters, and at least 3 percent of every legislative district’s voters.

After the Commission on Elections verifies the signatures to be genuine, it will schedule a referendum. If approved by a majority of our country’s voters, a proposed national law becomes a full-fledged law equal to laws passed by Congress.

The best part is — Congress and the President cannot stop this.

The voice of the people is the supreme law. All governement authority emanates from the people.

Kung hindi ngayon, kailan pa?
Kung hindi tayo, sino pa?”
