A very warm welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast in 2023, the is into its 3rd year!?

I'm super excited to announce that the next guest will be PGA Golf Professional and Author James Ellis-Caird with the podcast released tomorrow!

James discusses his book and also shares some wonderful stories from his time in Golf and talks about his wonderfully refreshing teaching philosophies and his brilliant winter video series "screw the winter grind".

James' new book- The Uncorrupted Pleasure of an Old Bladed Putter is available to purchase online and can also be ordered at all great book stores!

https://amzn.eu/d/hTnI1jS

As you first pick up the book with it's whispy illustrations & classic Golfing title your heart lifts and the first moment you read that the book is dedicated: "To my Dad, A truly wonderful man with a truly dreadful short game" you're immediately taken to that magical golfing place where Golf is far more than just a game....

More than living up to our lofty expectations in the podcast, James Ellis-Caird posted this delightful video and even sent a copy of his book with a hand written note... because it just looks better that way and he never liked kindle!

Thankyou James for being such a great guest and sharing such a great book!

The Uncorrupted Pleasure of An Old Bladed Putter
A collection of golfing fables

The Uncorrupted pleasure of an old bladed putter is a love letter to golf, revealing something of the beauty, joy and comradeship that its author James Ellis-Caird has taken from his golfing life. In doing so, it is quietly revolutionary, depicting a vision of golf freed from the constraints of convention and expectation, in which being ‘good enough’ is the goal, allowing space for personal expression, an appreciation of nature and the joy of the little things to come to the fore. A lesson not just for golf, but also perhaps for a quieter, gentler way to live our lives.

Whether you’re a non-golfer, a new golfer, an old golfer or an ex-golfer, The Uncorrupted pleasure offers gentle words of wisdom and a fond conversational style that will have you reaching for the nearest golf club and falling in love with the game all over again.

About the Author
James Ellis-Caird is a PGA professional golf coach, a husband, father, first time dog owner and lover of homemade baking.
James was captivated by the game of golf after striking his first shot with a borrowed five iron at Chesham and Ley Hill GC. Thirty-five years later his love affair with the game is going strong, channeling his passion into making golf more accessible, more open and more enjoyable for everyone.

After living all his life in Buckinghamshire, James, his wife and 8-year-old son have recently moved to the North Yorkshire coastline, with the dream to start a smallholding, play some beautiful golf courses, surf some waves and eat lots of fish and chips.

A late comer to the world of social media, James has recently found a new passion in content creation, with his videos and pictures encapsulating the beauty of the game he loves.

EISENHOWER TROPHY WINNERS 1992 - NEW ZEALAND!!

30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

It all started for me, way back in lockdown when I was watching old Golf videos and I saw some documentaries on New Zealand winning the Eisenhower Trophy back in 1992, which is a famous team event, featuring all of the best Amateur Golfers from around the World.

The 1992 event was played in Vancouver, Canada and the New Zealand team featured 4 unknown players outside of New Zealand who were Michael Campbell, Phil Tataurangi and Grant Moorhead.

America were the heavy favourites that week, featuring future major winners such as David Duval and Justin Leonard. After USA built a commanding lead though, New Zealand came from nowhere to win and shock everyone, including the tournament organisers who had to scramble to accommodate the Kiwi's victory!

Phil won the individual title and Michael came second. The New Zealand team with a brilliant score of -17 under par beat the Americans by 7 shots! They returned to a hero's welcome back in New Zealand and put Golf on the map here.

I wondered what it was like back then and what happed to them all after this tremendous victory, which has been described as a generational sporting achievement in New Zealand which is certainly no stranger to Global sporting success?

I decided to invite them on a podcast, which in the end took almost a year to put together as I spoke to each player and I heard from Stephen Scahill how a phone call from Michael Campbell changed the course of history... in the end it was well worth the wait.....

It was a wonderful pleasure speaking with on the History of Golf and his new Book “The Long Golden Afternoon, Golf’s Age Of Glory 1864- 1914” . His first book “Monarch of the Green: Young Tom Morris Pioneer of the Modern Game” published by Birlinn in Edinburgh, Scotland, has been greatly received.

I think it's absolutely wonderful in the modern age that Stephen will take the time to launch his book in Edinburgh & St. Andrews in June, around the time of Old Tom Morris' Birthday and just prior to the 150th playing of the Open at the Home of Golf!

Stephen will be available in person to meet fans, sign the book and talk more about them in person.

In this video, Stephen also talks more about how the game has become easier. He also discusses his upcoming tour to Scotland and joining the Tom Morris Trail playing 18 great Old Tom Courses!

Stephen kindly recount some brilliant tales from both Young Tommy and Old Tom Morris!

It was a pleasure to be joined by the renowned American Author & Golf Historian Stephen Proctor . Following a career in journalism, Stephen found his passion in Golf and the History of the game and set about reading over 275 books on Golf History!

After a fateful trip to the home of Golf St. Andrews, Scotland, Stephen visited the tombstone of young Tom Morris and feeling a powerful connection, he decided to write his first book on young Tom.

Stephen has been described by the famous St. Andrew’s Golf Historian Roger Mc Stravick, as “The Bernard Darwin of our Times”, listen to the podcast here:-

https://anchor.fm/jack-bull/episodes/Hole-In-One-Golf-Podcast---Stephen-Proctor---Author--Golf-Historian---golfingtales-50-e1j52vr

Stephen’s first book- “Monarch of the Green: Young Tom Morris Pioneer of the Modern Game” published by Birlinn in Edinburgh, Scotland, has been greatly received and read around the World. His new Book “The Long Golden Afternoon, Golf’s Age Of Glory 1864- 1914” is very hotly anticipated and will be launched by Stephen in Edinburgh and St. Andrews on Old Tom Morris’ birthday 16th June, just before the 150th playing of the Open in July at the home of Golf St. Andrews:-

Thus, the timing of the book launch (and this podcast!) is absolutely impeccable.

Steven tells me more about his books, his views on the history of the game and he also shares a few absolute gems! Please reach out to Steven on Twitter, follow his book launch at Waterstones where he will sign you a copy, if your very lucky he may well recite some more gems, or buy the book online at amazon or barnes and noble!

It was a privilege to be joined by Kiwi Golf star Amelia Garvey!

Listen to the podcast here:-

https://anchor.fm/jack-bull/episodes/Hole-In-One-Golf-Podcast---Amelia-Garvey---Kiwi-Golf-Star---US-Based-Tour-Player-golfingtales-47-e1b4l08

Amelia turned pro this year at her 2nd US Open, following a stellar amateur career which saw her win the Muriwai Open on the Charles Tour, the New Zealand Strokeplay Title and she was also runner up at the British Amateur, as well as being a top player on the University of Sothern California Golf team.

Amelia tells me how her first professional tournament was the US Open and how she has teamed up with former New Zealand Open and PGA Tour winner Grant Waite as her new coach, Amelia has certainly surrounded herself with a great team. We discuss one of Tiger Woods’ greatest shots:-

https://www.pgatour.com/long-form/2020/05/26/tiger-woods-best-shot-all-time-2000-rbc-canadian-open-bunker-iron.html

Amelia also shares some amazing insights from playing with major winners Patty Tavatanakit and Lydia Ko and playing at clinic with Sir Nick Faldo, before also meeting Annika Sorenstam!

Amelia plays out of the Kaipoi Golf Club in New Zealand, she tells me how she once played 100 holes there in 1 day in 2021! Amelia was originally born in Manchester, England, but sees herself as Kiwi through and through!

Amelia is a naturally talented sportsperson and could have chosen to play football professionally but decided to focus on Golf, a decision which is really starting to pay off! Amelia also provides an update on Tour School and her playing status and schedule for next year and we even have time to talk football and Manchester United! Go strong Amelia, you’ll continue to absolutely smash it!

Hey guys welcome back to the Hole In One Golf Podcast, I’m your host Jack Bull, thanks very much for listening. On this episode, it was great to catch up with English Golf Professional Steve Surry, who is an amazing guest with an inspirational journey. Steve turned pro back in 2003 and he’s chosen to play mainly on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa and he shares some wonderful insights into playing golf in South Africa as well as the on various tours in the UK where he sometimes struggled to enter. Steve has recently hit some great form in South Africa, he shot a 63 which included a hole in one, in the first round of the South African PGA around St Francis Links!

I caught up with Steve while he is currently is resting in Trowbridge, England, before heading back to South Africa for the co-sanctioned European and Sunshine Tour events. Steve talks openly about the highs & lows of professional golf on the “mini tours” and he reveals how to maximise the opportunities of playing on various tours across the UK and South Africa. We also discuss some of the talented players who Steve has played with, who have then gone on to perform at the highest level. Steve of course shares some crazy travel stories form his time in Africa and talks more about being a huge Bristol Rovers Football fan! I’m sure you’ll really enjoy this podcast, Steve is a really great guy and super open and generous with his time.

Thanks very much for listening, please do remember to share the podcast on whichever platform your listening on and also reach out on any of the social links below. Please also remember to reach out with guest recommendations which will really help continue to share some great golf stories.

It was a great honour to be joined by Spain’s Alex Del Rey on the , listen here:-

https://anchor.fm/jack-bull/episodes/Hole-In-One-Golf-Podcast---Alex-Del-Rey---Mr--58-mr58-golfingtales-44-e18k60u

Alex shares with me some incredible insights into how he is able to regularly shoot so many low scores and he tells me more about his amazing round of 58, during the second round at the Swiss Challenge in France, on Europe’s Challenge Tour.

Alex’s round of 58, consisted of an incredible 8 birdies and 3 eagles and at 14 under par, his round has go down in history as the lowest under par score in a professional tournament on any tour ever!

Alex also tells me how he recently missed out on shooting a 59 and it encouraged him to keep trying. He then describes the unbelievable reaction he has been faced with since carding his historic 58!

Alex discusses attending the same elite Athletic school in Madrid as Jon Rahm and he has since been compared to him numerous times. Alex tells me more about his highly successful career at the Arizona University Sun Devils Golf team. Alex had 4 collegiate wins and also won the World Individual Title at the Eisenhower Trophy. Alex explained that after turning professional, it wasn’t an easy start but he bounced back with a win in his 3rd event on the Alps Tour!

Congratulations on your historic round Alex and I’m certain we’ll see many more like this in future!

Alejandro Del Rey Career Achievements:

2018 Eisenhower Trophy Individual Winner
2019 Palmer Cup Team
2020 Turns Professional
2021 Wins Open de Mirabelle Or on Alps Tour after limited professional schedule due to COVID (3rd event as a professional)
