Promoted FC Volendam gets singer Jan Smit as chairman

Jan Smit will be the new chairman of FC Volendam on 1 July. The singer was already closely involved with the club that was recently promoted to the Eredivisie.

Smit was not immediately enthusiastic about the new position, the club writes in a statement. Since January 1, he was in charge of the commercial department of Volendam and he wanted to stay there for a while.

'Although this was not my plan, I am there for the club where the club thinks it has invited me. Next year I will celebrate my tenth anniversary here, then this is just dessert,' writes Jan Smit on the FC Volendam website. It will be his last job at the club, according to Smit.

The 36-year-old singer succeeds Piet Kemper, who did not want to extend his three-year term. Kemper joined FC Volendam three years ago and indicates that he did not look long for his successor.

Most famous ambassador
Kemper is pleased with his successor: 'Jan has by far the most board experience of anyone at the club and is our best-known ambassador. That is why we have asked him to resign from his commercial directorship to start as chairman from next season.'

The future of head coach Wim Jonk also seems to lie in the fishing village, NH Nieuws writes. He recently indicated 'that it will be fine' regarding the extension of his expiring contract. Both parties will meet after the season to give a blow to a new contract.

SCHIPHOL - Due to all the chaos at Schiphol, Corendon is looking at expanding at other
airports from next summer. The holiday giant wanted to expand at its home base, but opts
for growth in Maastricht, Brussels and the German border region.
That's what CEOs Steven van der Heijden and Atilay Uslu say to De Telegraaf. “If we are
chased away from here because there is no capacity or people available, then we will
have to evade,” says Van der Heijden.
Uslu: „I know people who live here and who no longer dare to participate in that circus
at Schiphol. Travelers prefer to drive a little further than standing in line at
Schiphol for three hours.” The national airport has been sighing under chaos for weeks
and even wants to cancel flights this summer.

Ringing railway trees keep Ermelo awake all night
Due to a malfunction last night, the barriers remained closed for seven hours at three railway crossings in Ermelo. All the while the level crossing bells were ringing and the emergency lights flashing. And it didn't stop there, because the trains that ran between Amersfoort and Zwolle did so very carefully and honked loudly, Omroep Gelderland reports.

The problems arose just before midnight, according to rail manager ProRail, as a result of a fault in a rail coil. This is the electronic component between the rails that indicates whether a train is approaching. As a precaution, the barriers will then be closed. In such a case, the trains have to pass the transitions with extra care - and honk the horn every time.

Punishable
If the railway barriers are closed and the alarm signals are on, it is punishable to pass a railway crossing. It is unclear whether people tried that in Ermelo last night.

At 07:00 this morning a technician had fixed the malfunction.
