Promoted FC Volendam gets singer Jan Smit as chairman
Jan Smit will be the new chairman of FC Volendam on 1 July. The singer was already closely involved with the club that was recently promoted to the Eredivisie.
Smit was not immediately enthusiastic about the new position, the club writes in a statement. Since January 1, he was in charge of the commercial department of Volendam and he wanted to stay there for a while.
'Although this was not my plan, I am there for the club where the club thinks it has invited me. Next year I will celebrate my tenth anniversary here, then this is just dessert,' writes Jan Smit on the FC Volendam website. It will be his last job at the club, according to Smit.
The 36-year-old singer succeeds Piet Kemper, who did not want to extend his three-year term. Kemper joined FC Volendam three years ago and indicates that he did not look long for his successor.
Most famous ambassador
Kemper is pleased with his successor: 'Jan has by far the most board experience of anyone at the club and is our best-known ambassador. That is why we have asked him to resign from his commercial directorship to start as chairman from next season.'
The future of head coach Wim Jonk also seems to lie in the fishing village, NH Nieuws writes. He recently indicated 'that it will be fine' regarding the extension of his expiring contract. Both parties will meet after the season to give a blow to a new contract.
