Madame Web is turning out to be historically bad for Sony, becoming the worst performing Marvel movie of the 21st century. If you consider inflation, that might be of all time. Which is saying something given how crap Marvel was before 1998’s Blade. I talk about Madame Web’s performance in its second weekend at the box office and what is monumentally bad showing means for coming superhero movies and the genre overall.

Madame Web has hit the box office with a thud. Sony keeps trying to create their own cinematic universe with the Spider-Man characters they have rights to and it winds up being anywhere between meh to what-the-$%&!-were-you-thinking! Guess which end of the spectrum Madame Web landed on. Henry Cavill was grossly misused by both Warner Brothers/DC and Netflix. He was both the perfect Superman and the perfect witcher Geralt of Rivia. If Hollywood were a sane institution, Cavill would be the biggest star in the world. It isn’t and he isn’t. However, he has a new movie coming out in which he actually stars, unlike Argyll where he is a poster prop for a movie he is only in for five minutes. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a World War II action movie in which he stars along with Reacher’s Alan Ritchson and directed by Guy Ritchie, best know for great British gangster films and the Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Homes movies. I react to the trailer released for the movie recently.

Doctor Who returns this year with a new Doctor and Companion. However, there is already trouble for the beleaguered show. Millie Gibson, the new Companion, is apparently out after the first season and a little bit of season 2. Reports in the media suggested both Gibson and the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa were not so enamored of the project that they were not looking for better gigs. This seems to confirm that impression.

The nature of Bob Iger’s retardation is not in his ability to close deals. Pixar shows that. Disney bought Pixar when Bob Iger was barely installed as the coup candidate for CEO after Michael Eisner was ousted. He would follow it up with other deals. No, his retardation is in the way his management style seems to encourage the hiring of creative blackholes that pump out family-repelling projects with seeming ease. Pixar’s losing streak at the box office is demonstrative of this. In this installment, we go through the powerhouse that was Pixar when Disney bought them, how losing John Lassiter seems to have drained that creative magic, and how bad the losing has gotten in recent years (admittedly aided by viruses of unknown origin about whose origin we were not allowed to speculate).

The year was 2023. So I took some time to reflect on what we were presented with by Hollywood. On one hand, we got Barbenheimer, Super Mario Brothers, One Piece, Spider-Men (and woman, you sexist pig! Oh, sorry, I forgot about the pig, too!) and Godzilla done proper. On the other, there was Disney . . . everything Disney, and Willow, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Fast X, Indiana Jones, DC . . . everything DC, and the glory of filmmaking that was The Marvels. To say things were lopsided to the bad would be an understatement. But thanks to the actors’ and writers’ strikes this year, next year will be . . . yeah, that started out to be hopeful, but let’s be honest, 2024 will probably only be better because there will be less of everything out of Hollyweird as the place burns to the ground. Happy New Year!

Netflix released a Zack Snyder space opera, Rebel Moon, just before Christmas. It was originally pitched as an R-rated Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy. Netflix picked it up and poured a fair amount into the science fiction flick in hopes of creating their own franchise going forward. Well, did they manage it? Mickey Mouse premiered in 1928 in the animated short Steamboat Willie, beginning the legal protection of the character that represents the Walt Disney Company. Over the year, Disney has extended and extended that copyright protection with the help of lawyers and politicians. With Disney’s descent into Florida politics recently, they have lost the support that might have extended it again. This means that beginning January 1, 2024, Disney’s copyright for the Mickey Mouse design in Steamboat Willie will end and that design will be free to use as it lapses into the public domain. DC Comics found themselves with competition in Hollywood as the new millennium began. Marvel, emerging from bankruptcy in the late 1990s, realizing the potential of putting their characters on film. Thusly, the first decade and change of the new millennium saw DC struggle to meet the challenge of their near century-old rivals’ emergence as a force in film. It was a time of inconsistency and doubt in the studio, and this was reflected in their performance at the box office. I would be a hint of things to come.
