Episode #53 Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps.
I don't think as Canadians we celebrate Neil Young enough. For me he is the greatest gift our country gave to music. And in this show I'll try and explain why.
God, I love this album!! And what a live act Neil is!!

Because every note of this album is imprinted upon my heart as I was lucky enough to be at the centre of this universe when the album came out. Challenging my old opinions with this one. I love Peter Gabriel Prog Genesis but always found Phil Collins too irritating to "love" his Genesis era.
When I listen back to it... well... tune in for a few surprises.
And OBVIOUSLY a frank discussion about the problems with that Illegal Alien song....

EPISODE 47 WEEZER - WEEZER (the BLUE album)
Posting this 24 hrs before transmission because it's another of those albums that has such a huge place in my life.
The first band I remember who were the same kind of nerdy geek I was, made ZERO attempt to hide it and made UTTERLY JOYFUL music that married 60s pop with 90s grunge in pockets of total effervescence.
You can't help but smile when you hear this album, and lord knows we can't get enough smiles in 2024.

Episode 42 Bryan Adams Reckless
I went through something of a reassessment of Bryan Adams after I moved to Canada.
He was responsible for a horrible family occasion (story told in this show) and in the UK he wasn't seen as remotely cool.
BUT now I think this album could just be the most all-encompassing relationship song album to sing out loud on a night out in the history of rock and roll. Episode 41: Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms.
It was BEAUTIFUL to sink back into this album while writing this. It was like seeing an old friend after a long time. In this show I try to explain what makes Mark Knopfler a guitarist who is utterly unique AND why he is one of my favourite singers ever. I know. Episode 39 Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory.
The most contemporary album of the series so far. The best-selling debut album this century and rightly so. A sonic masterpiece that shows Nu Metal doesn't have to be witless and moronic. It can be heart-rending and beautiful, with a kaleidoscope of tones and complexity, with metal AND rap, melody AND rage. I personally think this is one of the strongest shows of the series and I hope you can join me for it wherever you are in Canada at 5pm Pacific 9pm Atlantic tonight on your nearest Stingray Rock Radio Station.

And this episode has some really cool stuff about his technique, and his theories on what you need to do to be a great singer. I had such a glorious time writing this one: immersing myself in these wonderful story songs, listening to Bruce's Autobiography of the same name on Audiobook (hugely recommended!) and trying to come up with a theory as to WHY he is different than the other story songwriters.
