She talks a lot about how they learn most of their social skills from their parents, more than the interactions they have with other kids. At first glance, this is a sweet picture of a new mom, absolutely in love with her newborn baby - and that was true, I fell in love the moment I saw her. On the other hand, this picture is also a reminder of a very dark time. My feet are huge and swollen from having just narrowly survived preeclampsia. I’m holding Penny by the window to help her jaundice, desperately trying to avoid another hospital stay. We still have the congratulatory balloons, and visitors coming over all the time but inside I was TERRIFIED. I have never been so scared and it lasted for months.

I think about this story a lot from Episode 4: The Family You Choose, about a child who was sad growing up that she would never have a niece or nephew. As she got older and became “auntie” to many of her friends’ children, she realized she didn’t need siblings to be an aunt!
I miss my friends and family so much right now, and it will be amazing when I can be with all of them again. Going through the holidays without them has been devastating.
