Animal cruelty by an officer of the law

10/10/2023

Today was a big day at court and everyone in attendance had high hopes of a firm sentencing for John Ross, but the result was a slap in the face!

If I had to assign words to the emotion felt by everyone, I would use anger, deflation, and shock. The second I saw the Prosecuting Atty walk out of Judge's chambers and motion for me to exit the courtroom, I knew it was going to be a punch in the gut.

Sam desperately tried to find a private room to talk, but there were none available, so we took the pedestal in the hallway by the elevators. He told me he was concerned for my reaction. Smart man! His words were quick and pointed and every person in the hallway heard my anger. I ended up leaving the courthouse and didn't even listen to the actual sentencing.

Judge Kerr determined that my husband and stepson were bad dog owners and made reference that this type of event was inevitable given the fact the dogs were allowed to run around. She also took into consideration that John Ross had no prior convictions. Given these considerations, she gave him 3 YEARS PROBATION!

John Ross-
* was not attacked by Teddy
* lied on the stand
* multilated my favorite dog
* got a slap on his hand

This Judge found John Ross guilty of 2 felonies based on facts, but refused to punish him in the same manner as other felony charges. Its clear that in the State of Missouri, you can mutilate a dog and only receive probation.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
John Ross III convicted of mutilating his neighbor's dog

On September 1, John C. Ross III, 63, was convicted of Animal Abuse by Mutilating an Animal While It Is Alive and Unlawful Use of a Weapon, both Class E Felonies, in Division 14 of St. Louis County Circuit Court. It was argued as a bench trial. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Chief of Staff Sam Alton and assistant prosecuting attorney John Paul Frisella tried the case on July 27 and August 1.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Ross exhibited a weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner and used this weapon to repeatedly stab his neighbor's dog, Teddy, in Crestwood in 2019, killing Teddy purposely and inflicted suffering upon Teddy before Teddy’s death.

The Crestwood Police Department investigated the incident.

"People love their dogs. They are members of the family, as a result we have a responsibility of care for our pets. My office will treat these cases seriously, because they are serious. That is why I assigned my chief of staff to handle the case along with another experienced prosecutor from our office," said St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell. "I want to thank the court for its careful and thorough analysis and ultimately this guilty conviction. I also want to thank the family members of Teddy for having faith in this office to hold this individual accountable for this horrendous act of violence. Hopefully now this family can now get some peace and closure.”

Sentencing was set for October 10.

Here's a lesson on how the judicial system works.

Here we are ready for the trial and a settlement hearing is scheduled. The hearing happened last Friday. John Ross's attorney asked that his felonies be dropped to misdemeanors and he would plea.

He was offered a plea deal a long time ago and he turned it down!

My main goal for this trial is to have at least one felony stay on the books so this idiot can never again own a firearm. People always ask me why this is so important when the main charge is the fact that he stabbed my dog to death. Here's why... after he stabbed my dog, he pulled out his 45 caliber. I guess he was trying to say "what are you going to do about me stabbing your dog?" And previous to the stabbing, he pulled a gun on my teenage stepson and his dog. Will this fact be heard during this trial? The answer is no. This case doesn't care about his previous behavior, but I do.
