As we continue to celebrate , we must remember how many women's rights were actually only won in recent decades, and definitely not acquired by asking nicely and waiting around.

Swipe left for some quick facts:

📍In 1972, Lillian Garland, a receptionist at a California bank, went on unpaid leave to have a baby and when she returned, her position was filled. Her lawsuit led to 1978's Pregnancy Discrimination Act, which found that discriminating against pregnant people is unlawful.

📍In 1967, Kathrine Switzer, entered the Boston Marathon under the name "K.V. Switzer." At the time, the Amateur Athletics Union didn't allow women, & once discovered, staff tried to remove Switzer from the race, but she finished. AAU did not formally accept women until fall 1971.

📍Before 1974's Fair Credit Opportunity Act made it illegal for financial institutions to discriminate against applicants' gender, banks could refuse women a credit card.

📍Before 1977, sexual harassment was not considered a legal offense until a woman brought her boss to court after she refused his sexual advances and was fired. The court stated that her termination violated the 1974 Civil Rights Act, which made employment discrimination illegal.

📍Until 1973, women were not able to serve on a jury in all 50 states, when a federal law was passed. However, this varied by state. Utah was the first state to allow women to serve jury duty in 1898. Though, by 1927, only 19 states allowed women to serve jury duty.

📍Until 2018, Utah and Idaho were the last two states that lacked clear legislation protecting chestfeeding parents from obscenity laws.

📍In 1998, the Parental Leave Act entitled parents up to 26 weeks of unpaid parental leave to spend time looking after their children.

It’s time for another book recommendation 📚

In her collection of funny and insightful essays entitled “Bad Feminist”, takes readers through the journey of her evolution as a woman of color while also exploring what it means to be a feminist despite loving things that could seem at odds with feminist ideology.

The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture.

Sharp, poignant and funny, “Bad Feminist” is a spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better.

We highly recommend it!

Did you know?

During an era where white rock stars predominantly ruled the charts, Aretha Franklin changed music forever as the first woman to unapologetically make Black music part of the American mainstream.

By 1987, the Queen of Soul would make history becoming the first female artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, setting the stage for generations of women to come.

With her unique instrument, Franklin pioneered the future of soul music with her career-defining hits, from her distinctively unapologetic, commanding delivery of Otis Redding's "Respect," to her powerhouse hit "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."

An artist of passion, sophistication and command, whose recordings remain anthems that defined soul music, Franklin most certainly paved the road for other women with her powerful vocals, as well as her fearless musical authority and unapologetic energy.

Who is ready for another book recommendation???

With humor and levity, in “We Should All Be Feminists”, New York Times best-selling author offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century – one rooted in inclusion and awareness.

She shines a light not only on blatant discrimination, but also the more insidious, institutional behaviors that marginalize women around the world, in order to help readers of all walks of life better understand the often masked realities of sexual politics.

She also draws extensively on her own experiences – in the U.S., in her native Nigeria, and abroad – offering an artfully nuanced explanation of why the gender divide is harmful for women and men, alike.

Argued in the same observant, witty and clever prose that has made Adichie a best-selling novelist, this book is a remarkable exploration of what it means to be a woman today – and an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.

We highly recommend it 📚

Did you know?

In 1837, Richard Humphreys, a silversmith, established the African Institute (now Cheyney University) in Pennsylvania, making it the oldest HBCU in the United States. Its mission was to teach free African Americans skills for gainful employment. Students were taught reading, writing and basic math alongside religion and industrial arts.

During the 1850s, three more HBCUs were founded: Miner Normal School (1851) in Washington, D.C.; Lincoln University (1854) in Pennsylvania; and Wilberforce (1856) in Ohio. The African Methodist Episcopal Church established Wilberforce University, the first HBCU operated by African Americans. The provision of education for people of African descent in early America was recognized by some as unnecessary and criminal, while others saw it as essential and vital.

During the civil rights era, HBCUs served as centers for Black resistance to segregation and disenfranchisement. For example, the famous 1960 Greensboro lunch counter sit-ins were organized by four North Carolina A&T University students. Eight years later, South Carolina State University, an HBCU, served as the site of a racial segregation protest, during which police killed three Black student protestors and injured 28 others.
HBCUs have also educated many important pioneers who fought for equal protection under the law and against segregation and disenfranchisement, including W.E.B. Du Bois, Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Congressman John Lewis.

It’s time for another good book recommendation 📖

In “How Long ‘til Black Future Month?,” three-time Hugo Award winner and NYT bestselling author challenges and delights readers with thought-provoking narratives of destruction, rebirth, and redemption.

In her collection of short fiction stories, Jemisin sharply examines modern society, infusing magic into the mundane, and drawing deft parallels in the fantasy realms of her imagination:

Dragons and hateful spirits haunt the flooded city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In a parallel universe, a utopian society watches our world, trying to learn from our mistakes. A Black mother in the Jim Crow south must figure out how to save her daughter from a fey offering impossible promises. And in the short story “The City Born Great,” a young street kid fights to give birth to an old metropolis’s soul.

Impressively varied in tone, voice, subject, and style, “How Long ‘til Black Future Month?” is wonderfully entertaining and provocative.

: Although adjusting to Instagram’s various algorithm changes can be annoying, staying in the know can help you tailor your strategy to "hack" what the algorithm is prioritizing so that you can reach more users and build a community of engaged followers.

Instagram algorithms rely on three key signals:

Who: Whose posts are you interacting with? If you frequently like or comment on someone's content, you're more likely to see their posts in your feed.

What: What type of content do you engage with? For example, if you love beauty content, the algorithm will continue serving that type of content to you.

When: This focuses on when a post has been posted to decide if it's relevant to you. It also takes into consideration how often you scroll on the app – so it will pick and choose what to prioritize.

According to Instagram, they prioritize Reels based on what they believe a viewer will be most likely to interact with and use a set of signals to help rank content.

You should avoid posting Instagram Reels that are low-resolution, too blurry, have already been shared elsewhere, or are visibly recycled from another app as these types of Reels will be deprioritized – meaning they’ll be less likely to appear across the app.

Another weekend, another opportunity to read a good book 📚

“Down These Mean Streets”, a memoir written by author Piri Thomas, is a noteworthy work on Afro Latinidad in the United States. Discussing the racism, identity issues and poverty he experienced during his lifetime growing up in Spanish Harlem in NYC, the Cuban-Puerto Rican poet created a piece of literature that shone a light on his own community.

As a darker-skinned Latino, Piri faced discrimination, both from his family and society as a whole – his father allegedly preferred his lighter-skinned children. During his youth he also used and sold drugs, which ultimately landed him in prison for seven years after he hurt a police officer.

While completing his sentence, he finished high school and turned to writing. The work he created was so trailblazing that his editor told him that with "Down These Mean Streets”, Piri created a new genre, one where “everybody speaks like themselves.”

Piri is most certainly remembered as an influential voice of the Nuyorican Movement, which captured the experiences of Puerto Ricans in New York through the discrimination and marginalization they faced.

18/02/2023

Jean-Michel Basquiat was a visual artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian and Puerto Rican parents who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement.

Basquiat first achieved fame as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Manhattan's Lower East Side during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture.

By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in Documenta in Kassel, Germany. At 22, he was one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York.

Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique.

Using social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism, his visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle.

Since Basquiat's death at the age of 27 from a he**in overdose in 1988, his work has steadily increased in value. In 2017, Untitled, a 1982 painting depicting a black skull with red and yellow rivulets, sold for a record-breaking $110.5 million, becoming one of the most expensive paintings ever purchased.

Ready for another book recommendation???

In late August 1619, a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin, but it is more than that: It is the source of so much that still defines the United States.

In ’ “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story,” which builds on The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” our collective understanding of American history is reframed by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative.

The book substantially expands on the original "1619 Project,” weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society, from politics, music, diet, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democracy itself. This legacy can be seen in the way we tell stories, the way we teach our children, and the way we remember.

Together, the elements of the book reveal a new origin story for the United States, one that helps explain not only the persistence of anti-Black racism and inequality in American life today, but also the roots of what makes the country unique.

Did you know?

Sylvia Robinson, once singer-songwriter turned founder and CEO of Sugar Hill Records, set the musical landscape for many of today’s most recognizable names in hip hop.

Dubbed “The Queen of Rap” by her peers, she has had a hand in churning out some groundbreaking hits over the span of four decades, including Grandmaster Flash’s record “The Message”.

Sylvia Robinson’s role in shaping Sugar Hill was unprecedented. “She’s arguably one of the most consequential producers and label owners of all time,” Billboard magazine wrote in 1976.

Perhaps most impressive is Sylvia’s musical shape-shifting abilities and business-savvy mindset, as evidenced by her making the leap from songwriter, to record producer, to label CEO, and achieving major milestones in all roles – despite the corners she cut to get there.

From party rocking, to the DJ as a musician, to social consciousness, Sugar Hill made everything possible for today’s hip-hop stars.
