IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT POOLFROG PUBLISHERS

It's with a heavy heart that I bring you the news that Poolfrog Publishers is shutting down. I did not make this decision lightly and I know we are letting some of you down.

I quit my job a year ago, having ploughed more than a year already into planning how the business will run and searching for potential authors to publish. I gave myself twelve more months to make this business work.

My goal was to create a publishing company that would do good for the planet, as well as treating new authors with respect and fairness in an industry riddled with exploitation.

Since then, it’s been one turn of bad luck after another. Things that happened in my personal life, as well as for the business.

Poolfrog has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager, and I’m devastated that it’s failed. It’s become an endless drain on my time, energy, and money, all things I can’t afford to keep spending.

So with this message comes a huge THANK YOU to all of you who have supported me and this business over the last couple of years. You've all been incredible.

We're working with on a cover design for Richard Harries' upcoming book 'Changed Times.'

We're stoked to be working with Jim. He was requested by Richard as he's worked on Richard's previous works (published by other presses) and we thought it was a great way of connecting with his previous publications whilst he embarks on this new journey with us.

✨THIS IS A PSA✨

We are a traditional publishers. We are NOT a hybrid or vanity press.

We will NEVER ask you to pay us to publish your work (we think this is exploitative), and we will manage the marketing and distribution of your published book.

As such, we have a strict criteria to follow when choosing which manuscripts to accept. We are looking for manuscripts that align with our values as a publisher of literature themed around the natural world and
the climate crisis.

This allows us to publish and distribute books we can market to our target audience, work with vendors and creators that are aligned with our values.

We have a new blog post explaining this on our website, and we are working on a new FAQ section on our submissions page.

We hope this prevents disappointment from anyone wanting to go down the self-publishing route.

Laline Paull is a hero of mine. Her debut novel 'The Bees' was the book that started me on the journey to begin this small press, and her third novel 'Pod' has been longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2023.

We've had a makeover!

We love our old look (it was classy as hell), but now that we're two years in we have a better idea of who you lot are (our audience) and what look we want to go for.

We need a vibe that is snappy, colourful and bright to match our books, our authors, and our readers: contemporary but with a nature-themed twist.

It's a hard balance to get right but we reckon we've nailed it.

On the last Friday of every month we host a flash fiction competition, and the winning story will be featured on our website.

THE RULES:
✨ There is no minimum word count but you must NOT exceed 1000 words
✨ It will be judged by a member of the Poolfrog team, rulings are final
✨ You have until the following Monday to submit your flash fiction
✨ It doesn't actually have to be flash fiction, you could submit poetry, a haiku, a limerick, creative non-fiction, script, or whatever as long as I can upload it digitally to our website and it's readable.

We have a new poet in the Poolfrog Pond.

Rupsha officially joined us a couple weeks ago. She hails from Kolkata, India and has had her work published in various international magazines and journals.

What I love about her work is her intrinsic ability to use language in imaginative ways that highlight her personal experiences, and her unique narrative voice that allows the reader to step into her world and get lost in it.

Her debut collection 'Faded' will be available soon.

Meet our newest poet Richard Harries.

Richard officially joined us last week. He's a Northern writer who's northernness seeps into his words through both grittiness and humour.

I met Richard at a spoken word event in Hull called and was blown away by the depth of emotion in his words and the playful way he experiments with form.

His collection 'Changed Times' will be available soon.
