BARCELONA: Impromptu street celebrations erupted across Spain as the clock struck midnight on Saturday, when a six-month-long national state of emergency to contain the spread of coronavirus ended and many nighttime curfews were lifted.

In Madrid, police had to usher revelers out of the central Puerta del Sol square, where the scenes of unmasked dancing and group signing esembled pre-pandemic nightlife.

Teenagers and young adults also poured into central squares and beaches of Barcelona to mark the relaxation of restrictions.

"Freedom!" said Juan Cadavid, who was reconnecting with friends. "(It’s) a bit scary, you know, because of COVID, but I want to feel like this around a lot of people."

The 25-year-old Barcelona resident was also rejoicing at the prospect of going back to work at a Michelin-star restaurant that has been closed for the past seven months due to pandemic-related restrictions.

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Tensions ran high Sunday in annexed east Jerusalem after hundreds of Palestinians were wounded in a weekend of clashes between protesters and Israeli security forces, sparking global concern that the unrest could spread further.

The violence around Jerusalem's revered Al-Aqsa mosque compound and the Old City, mostly at night, is the worst since 2017, fuelled by a years-long bid by Jewish settlers to take over Palestinian homes in east Jerusalem.

The unrest swept parts of the occupied West Bank and a rocket was fired early Sunday from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, with the Israeli army saying it responded with an air strike that struck a Hamas military post.

Tunisia's foreign ministry said it has called for a meeting Monday of the UN Security Council to discuss the escalating violence amid growing international calls for an end to the unrest.

Some 100 Palestinians were wounded in Saturday's overnight clashes, many hit by rubber bullets and stun grenades, the Palestinian Red Crescent said. Israeli police said of its 17 officers were wounded.

The previous night more than 220 people, again mostly Palestinians, were hurt after Israeli police stormed Al-Aqsa after they said Palestinians threw rocks and fireworks at officers.

On Saturday night, thousands of Palestinians packed Al-Aqsa mosque compound, Islam's third holiest site which Jews revere as the Temple Mount, to hold special Ramadan prayers.

09/05/2021

Live audio app Clubhouse will begin introducing a test version of its app to Google's Android users in the United States on Sunday, the company said, in a potentially big expansion of its market.

The app, which spiked in popularity early this year after celebrity billionaire Elon Musk and others appeared in audio chats, has sparked copy cats from startups and larger rivals including Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc.

It has been available only to users of Apple devices and by invitation. In some markets such as China, invitations were so sought after some were auctioned on online marketplaces.

But downloads of the app, one measure of popularity, have significantly fallen.

After peaking in February with 9.6 million downloads, that number fell to 2.7 million in March and then 900,000 downloads in April, according to Sensor Tower.

The drop has sparked questions about its long term viability and whether its success was owed in part to people spending more time at home during the pandemic.

The long anticipated Android launch is expected to reach more new users globally. The Android version will reach other English-speaking markets and then the rest of the globe days and weeks after the U.S. market beta launch.

Clubhouse, which created the category, now faces the likes of Facebook, whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in April a slew of audio products, including Clubhouse-style live audio rooms and a way for users to find and play podcasts.
In January, Twitter Inc said that it will introduce a new feature to let users charge admission to their live audio chat rooms in its "Spaces" feature, as the company seeks to court more content creators. It has been available to Android users since March.

08/05/2021

At least 30 people have been killed and many more were injured after a bomb exploded near a girls’ school in a majority Shia district of the Afghan capital Kabul.

Many of the victims were pupils aged between 11 and 15 years old, an Afghan government spokesmen said.

The Taliban condemned the attack, apparently aimed at civilians, and denied any responsibility.

Ambulances rushed to evacuate the wounded from the scene of the blast near Syed Al-Shahda school, in the Shia majority area of Dasht-e-Barchi, in the west of the city.
Residents said the explosion was deafening.

One local man told The Associated Press he heard three separate explosions, although there was no official confirmation of multiple blasts.

While no-one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, previous brutal attacks in the same area have been claimed by the Afghan affiliate of the so-called Islamic State (IS).

The radical Sunni Muslim group has declared war on Afghanistan’s minority Shia Muslims.

Washington blamed IS for a vicious attack last year in a maternity hospital in the same area that killed pregnant women and newborn babies.

In Dasht-e-Barchi, angry crowds attacked the ambulances and even beat health workers as they tried to evacuate the wounded, health ministry spokesman Ghulam Dastigar Nazari said.

A retired Dutch couple have become Europe’s first inhabitants of a 3D-printed house. Elize Lutz and Harrie Dekkers (main picture above) moved into the boulder-shaped bungalow in Eindhoven at the weekend. They are renting the two-bedroom place for €800 (£695) per month.

A far cry from the winsome, wonky townhouses synonymous with the Netherlands, the squat structure is the world’s first habitable 3D-printed property with load-bearing walls.

Proponents of the technology say it could slash building costs, making properties more affordable, as well as reducing the amount of cement used in construction. Cement is responsible for an estimated 8 per of the world’s CO2 emissions.

Prof Theo Salet from Eindhoven University of Technology said the home, one of five planned by the construction firm Saint-Gobain Weber Beamix, was a “major step” toward scaling up 3D printing technology. “Digitisation from design to implementation leads to sustainable and affordable homes, tailor-made to the wishes of the resident,” he added.

08/05/2021

A cyberattack has forced the shutdown of a major gas pipeline in the U.S. that supplies 45% of all fuel consumed on the East Coast.

The cyberattack against Colonial Pipeline, which runs from Houston to Linden, New Jersey, began 7 p.m. on Friday night, according to a Federal Emergency Management Agency report reviewed by ABC News.

"We proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our IT systems," the company said in a statement.

Colonial’s network supplies fuel from U.S. refiners on the Gulf Coast to the eastern and southern U.S. and transports 2.5 million barrels a day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products through 5,500 miles of pipelines, the company said.
t’s not clear how long the pipelines would be shut down. The shutdown will affect other pipeline operations such as the Buckeye and Twin Oaks Pipeline which runs through the NYC-Long Island area and Maine, FEMA said.

The company, based in Alpharetta, Georgia, said it hired an outside cybersecurity firm to investigate the nature and scope of the attack and has also contacted law enforcement and federal agencies.

"Colonial Pipeline is taking steps to understand and resolve this issue. At this time, our primary focus is the safe and efficient restoration of our service and our efforts to return to normal operation. This process is already underway, and we are working diligently to address this matter and to minimize disruption to our customers and those who rely on Colonial Pipeline," the company said.

The FBI has not responded to ABC News' request for comment on the matter.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas spoke about the dangers of ransomware earlier this week given the recent spate of ransomware attacks, including the hack of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the Illinois Attorney General's Office.

Authorities in Indian-administered Kashmir have barred doctors from speaking to media and directed the oxygen manufacturing units to stop supplies to the NGOs and private users.

The order issued by the region’s department of health on Thursday came as it battles a deadly wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with hospitals running short of beds and patients scrambling for oxygen cylinders, medicines and medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators.

07/05/2021

Palestinians and Israelis hurled rocks and chairs at each other in the tense East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah on Thursday before Israeli police moved in to separate them, arresting at least 15 people, all of them Palestinians. In one incident, a Jewish Israeli man fired into the air after a vehicle was set on fire.

Tensions have flared in Sheikh Jarrah over the last week where dozens of Palestinians are at risk of being evicted following a long legal battle with right-wing Jewish Israelis trying to acquire property in the neighborhood, which is just north of Jerusalem’s Old City.

The tensions have raised fears of sparking a wider conflict, with the Hamas terror group in Gaza warning of renewed violence over the issue.
Pro-Palestinian protesters have been meeting for nightly iftars — the meal held after breaking the day-long fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan — at long tables set up outside. On Thursday, extreme-right MK Itamar Ben-Gvir set up a makeshift parliamentary office across the street from the iftar meal.

Video circulating online later showed protesters on both sides hurling rocks and chairs at each other, and Palestinians tearing down the awning, before police moved in. There were no reports of serious injuries.

07/05/2021

John Krasinski has unveiled the final trailer for his much-delayed sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place.

The film, starring Emily Blunt as a mother trying to protect her children in a post-apocalyptic world filled with monsters who hunt using incredibly sensitive hearing, has been delayed several times due to the pandemic.

A Quiet Place Part II was originally due to arrive in March last year but was pushed back to September 2021, 18 months after its initial release date.

The final trailer reveals the feature will now arrive in UK cinemas on the earlier date of June 3 and will not initially be released on streaming services.

Sharing the two-minute teaser on Twitter, Krasinski wrote: “Here. We. Go!”
Returning to the day the outbreak began, Krasinki’s Lee Abbott is seen witnessing the chaos unfold on TV, before cutting to his wife Evelyn, played by Blunt, trying to survive following the events of the first film.

Evelyn and her children encounter a colony of survivors including Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy as Emmett and Oscar-nominee Djimon Hounsou.

“I don’t know why you came all the way up here – there’s nothing left,” Murphy says in character.

The original A Quiet Place arrived in 2018 to critical acclaim.

Blunt’s husband, Krasinski, directed and starred in the film, and also writes and directs the sequel.

06/05/2021

A small plane has crashed into a house in Mississippi, killing one of the home’s four occupants and three Texas residents who were flying to a university graduation ceremony, authorities said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said that an investigator was on the way to the scene in Hattiesburg, about 90 miles south-east of Mississippi capital Jackson, to investigate the crash, which caused a fire.

Authorities were not aware of any distress calls from the Mitsubishi MU-2B-60 but have yet to review air traffic recordings, agency spokesman Peter Knudson said.

Police and the coroner’s office identified the dead as Gerry Standley, 55, of Hattiesburg; and two adults and a toddler from Wichita Falls, Texas: Louis Provenza, 67, Anna Calhoun, 23, and Harper Provenza, two, news agencies reported.

Mr Standley worked full-time for a paving company and was assistant pastor at his church, according to a webpage to raise money for funeral expenses and the replacement of belongings lost to the fire.

Ellie Goulding’s newborn son has been named Arthur Ever Winter Jopling.

The singer’s art dealer husband Caspar Jopling confirmed last week that Goulding had given birth to her first child.

A birth announcement in The Times newspaper confirmed the newborn’s name and revealed he was born on April 29.
Jopling posted a picture of the announcement on Instagram.

Alongside the picture, he wrote: “It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. Ecclesiastes 7.5 [[ ps hi A.E.W.J. ]].”

Last week Jopling said Goulding, 34, and the baby were “happy and healthy” following the birth.

He added: “I don’t ever address the public attention that comes with Ellie’s job.

“But during this magical and personal moment we would really appreciate being able to enjoy our privacy. Thank you x.”

Goulding and Jopling tied the knot in a glamorous wedding at York Minster in August 2019.

The chart-topper wore a traditional bespoke wedding gown with a veil and train designed by Natacha Ramsay-Levi for Chloe, while Mr Jopling opted for a suit from Savile Row tailors Huntsman.

Latvia has officially recognized and condemned the 1915 Armenian Genocide, Armenia’s Ambassador to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia Tigran Mkrtchyan, who is completing his mission, said on Facebook.

05/05/2021

Canada’s health regulator has authorised Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 12 to 15.

Dr Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser at Health Canada, said it will help children return to a normal life.

The vaccine was previously authorised for anyone 16 or older.

The US Food and Drug Administration is also expected to approve Pfizer’s vaccine for young people by next week, setting up jabs for many before the beginning of the next school year.

The announcement comes barely a month after the company found that its vaccine, which is already authorised for those age 16 and older, also provided protection for the younger age group.

Pfizer in late March released preliminary results from a vaccine study of 2,260 US volunteers aged 12 to 15 showing there were no cases of Covid-19 among fully vaccinated adolescents compared with 18 among those given dummy jabs.

05/05/2021

Meme-based virtual currency Dogecoin soared on Wednesday to an all-time high, extending its 2021 rally to become the fourth-biggest digital coin.

Dogecoin, launched as a satirical critique of 2013's cryptocurrency frenzy, has climbed 41% in the last 24 hours to a record $0.68, according to CoinMarketCap.

This year alone it has soared over 14,000%, from $0.00468 on Dec. 31, taking it past more widely used cryptocurrencies such as the Tether stablecoin and XRP to become the fourth-largest by market capitalisation.

Dogecoin - whose logo features a Shiba Inu dog at the centre of the meme - remains little used in commerce or payments. Like other digital coins, it is highly volatile and its price is heavily influenced by social media users.

On Tuesday, the New York crypto exchange Gemini said it would start letting users trade and custody the token.

Some cryptocurrency market players said its volatility was its main draw, with a mixture of retail investors and market makers fuelling its trading volumes.

"The ugly truth is that a lot of crypto valuations are divorced from reality anyway," said Joseph Edwards, head of research at crypto brokerage Enigma Securities.

"Right now, (Dogecoin) is being seen as it's always been seen - an asset with surprising staying power that provides opportunities to take advantage of volatility every year or so."

Dogecoins are now cumulatively worth $88 billion, compared to bitcoin's $1 trillion and ethereum's $391 billion.

05/05/2021

As India grapples with an unprecedented new wave of COVID-19, one of the country’s major companies is working round-the-clock to get free oxygen out to people in need.

Traditionally, Reliance Industries is not a manufacturer of medical-grade liquid oxygen. But over a year into the pandemic, the company—which is owned by India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani—has gone on to become the nation’s largest producer from a single location, supplying over 55,000 MT of medical-grade liquid oxygen to people since March 2020.

At its refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in Jamnagar and other facilities, Reliance is producing over 1000 MT of medical-grade liquid oxygen per day—or over 11% of India’s total production—meeting the needs of nearly every 1 in 10 patients needing the life-saving treatment across the nation.

Mexican authorities have promised a full investigation into the collapse of a metro overpass in Mexico City, as questions mount over the line's safety.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said "nothing would be hidden" while the mayor said an external company would be involved in the inquiry.

The elevated track on Line 12 plummeted onto a road killing at least 23 people.

Concerns over possible structural failures have been raised since the line was inaugurated, in 2012.

There have been concerns about design problems and construction standards, as well as allegations of corruption.
