The Andy Williams Christmas Album is my all-time favorite Christmas album, and if you’re of a certain age, you certainly remember his annual Christmas shows on NBC from 1962-1971. I first fell in love with the music of the Bee Gees with their 1968 hit "I Started a Joke" while I was in high school, and my love for them and their music has never stopped. I was the Program/Music Director of Top 40 KJMO/Jefferson City, MO when 'Saturday Night Fever' came out in 1977, and boy was it exciting to play all their hits from that monster soundtrack on the radio. I was fortunate to meet Barry, Robin & Maurice in the early '90s when they visited the PolyGram Records office in west L.A., (thank you Vicki Leben & Laura Hinson), while I was working at R&R (Radio & Records). A photo was taken with them that day, but I never received it. I so wish I had that in my collection.

Not only is Peter White my favorite Smooth Jazz guitarist, but his song “Bueno Funk” epitomizes the sound I was going for when I created the format for SchaefRadio.com. This Latin-flavored song always makes me happy, and I have to crank it up, every time I play it. Peter is an English musician and composer who plays guitar, piano, accordion and harmonica. He’s known for his 20-year collaboration with Al Stewart (“Time Passages” & “Year of the Cat”), and for working with vocalist, Basia. R&B, Soul, Disco and Pop artist Luther Vandross will always have a special place in my heart. When I was the Music Director at 102.7 KIIS FM/Los Angeles (1982-1987), Larry Douglas, Polly Anthony and Lori Anderson at Epic Records set up a luncheon with Luther and me (unfortunately no photo). I had already seen Luther in concert a couple of times, so it was a big thrill to meet him and talk to him about his life and his music. He was oh so charming, funny, gracious and seemed genuinely interested in hearing about what I had to say about Top 40 radio and the direction music was going during the early years of the ‘80s.

During his career, Luther sold over 40 million records, had 11 consecutive Platinum Albums, and received 8 Recording Academy / GRAMMYs. In 2005, he died of a heart attack at age 54. I play 40 Luther Vandross songs on SchaefRadio.com, my free and commercial-free Internet streaming music station.

Since I was born in 1952, I was a little young for the whole ELVIS PRESLEY phenomenon. I actually didn't really get into Elvis' music until my 30s when my best friend, Lou Galliani, who was 10 years older than me, turned me onto his music. I've been a huge fan ever since. Seeing the terrific biopic movie "Elvis" this summer was revelatory, as there was so much about Elvis' life that I didn't know about. I highly recommend that you see this movie, if you haven't already. Two big thumbs up from me!

I credit saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. and specifically his biggest hit, “Just the Two of Us,” featuring Bill Withers with helping me get the job as Music Director at Top 40 102.7 KIIS FM/Los Angeles in 1982.

Here’s the story: In 1981, I was the Local Promotion Manager for Elektra/Asylum Records in St. Louis, MO. When “Just the Two of Us” was released from the “Winelight” album, I promoted it to Gerry DeFrancesco, who was the new Music Director of Adult Contemporary KSD-FM in St. Louis. I told him it was a #1 record, and, of course, he laughed. That’s what promotion reps said to him all the time, but I honestly believed it was. The fact that Grover was a Smooth Jazz artist made the chance of it going #1 pretty slim, but with Bill Withers singing that amazing vocal, it started to get airplay around the country and climb the Billboard charts. When it reached the Top 10, Gerry added it to his station, and it was a big hit for him. It missed going #1 by one slot, reaching #2, where it stayed for 3 weeks. I’m pretty sure that left an impression on Gerry, so that when he was looking for a Music Director for KIIS-FM, he knew I had “good ears,” and the rest, as they say, is history.

Grover Washington, Jr. played soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, and is credited with being one of the founders of the Smooth Jazz format. He died of a massive heart attack in 1999 at the age of 56. I play 25 of his songs on SchaefRadio.com including that iconic song, “Just the Two of Us,” which always makes me smile.

With the passing of Ramsey Lewis last week, I thought it appropriate to feature him this week as an artist that I play on SchaefRadio.com. Ramsey was an American Jazz pianist, composer and radio personality. He recorded 80 albums in his 66-year career garnering 5 gold albums and 3 Recording Academy / GRAMMYs awards. His best known songs are “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy,” and “Wade In The Water.” I play 21 Ramsey Lewis songs on SchaefRadio.com, my always free and commercial-free Internet streaming music station. He will be missed by many, but his music will live on forever.

On SchaefRadio.com, I play the pop vocal standards of the ‘40s & ‘50s. The last remaining vocalist from that era is Tony Bennett. At age 96, he’s outlasted them all, and until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he was still regularly recording and touring. He’s amassed 20 Recording Academy / GRAMMYs awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2001). His body of work is jaw-dropping (over 70 albums), and his collaborations with Lady Gaga, Diana Krall and k.d. lang showed he could still jam with “kids” many years his junior.
