Cyril Babeev interviews Sova Centre’s Alexander Verkhovsky on race and ethnicity in the wake of the Soviet collapse, and the two Chechen Wars that were closely linked to the question of identity in the early days of the Russian Federation.

“It was, after all, a very weird feeling for the residents of the metropole, when their country suddenly sharply decreased in size. I think people didn’t even immediately memorise where their new borders were. It was especially noticeable, for example, in relation to Ukraine. People couldn’t believe that it became a different country altogether, because it’s just so close—you can take a bus and go there.

Of course, those were very uncomfortable feelings, and such feelings tend to transform into political phenomena over time. And the rise of Russian nationalism at that time was certainly a response to the collapse of the empire.”

Today, Chileans are casting votes for their new president. This election has shown that Chile, viewed as a beacon of stability in a continent otherwise plagued by fragile institutions, is not immune to political extremism. While the country managed a peaceful transfer of power from the dark days of the Pinochet regime, the lack of social reform since the transfer has driven voters away from the center and towards more radical political options.
