In 1973, artist Rosemarie Stith witnessed the rising voices of pro-choice feminists on the campus of Yale Law School. As a symbol of triumph, these women embraced the image of a closed fist held high in the air. This lead Rosemarie to consider what their triumph is over. As a critique, she created this sculpture entitled “Mother with Child.” Rosemarie’s piece profoundly shows us that domination over the prenatal child is not strength or empowerment, but something more akin to the horrific and the absurd. True strength implies overcoming something difficult, whereas it is “easy” to crush the weak, to disregard all natural obligations and to choose to be an aggressor.
But ultimately, this choice dehumanizes the woman, changing her form and attitude into something she never ought to be: destroyer instead of life bearer.
