In this episode, I interviewed Dr. James St. Clair from . Dr. St. Clair breaks down dental orthopedics and the importance of establishing care with an orthodontist at a young age. Like myself, most people think that orthodontics is just about cosmetics and teeth straightening. However, problems within your mouth can lead to airway disruption, chewing difficulties, speech complications, and much more. Receiving the correct treatment can impact your confidence and your overall health.  My interview with Dr. St. Clair was very enlightening and I wish that I had known many of these things when my kids were younger. Personally, I decorate the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We stopped traveling for Christmas years ago, so Thanksgiving is our big travel holiday. I want to come home to an already decorated house.

My name is Denay Hooks, and I have been married to Sam for 15 years. We have Hudson(13), Hannah(10), and Hadley(5). I grew up in Mason, Texas, and then graduated from Texas State University. 😻

Sam and I met on a blind date at a Pat Green concert in San Angelo. We have lived in San Angelo, Odessa, Louisiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Sam was offered the same job in Lubbock so we moved here four years ago. He is a alum, so it was like coming home for him. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

I used to teach First Grade but stopped teaching when we moved to Louisiana. I was pregnant with Hannah and wanted to be a SAHM to my two littles. When Hannah was 21 months, she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. Check out to learn more about Rett and the advances they are making to find a treatment. 🙏🏼

Hannah inspired me to write a children's book series about Bug and Boo (Hudson and Hannah) going on adventures. The Adventures of Bug and Boo: Under the Sea was in a drawer for a few years, but as our family started down this new path, I saw a need for educating people about individuals with disabilities. I wanted to teach kids to ask questions, interact with everyone, dream big, and create a world that is inclusive of all. 🙌🏼🙌🏼

My next book, The Adventure of Bug and Boo: Giddy Up to Texas, will be out this fall! Bug and Boo will explore Texas and even stop in to see the Red Raiders play! Side note: I wrote this book before I had Hadley so she will be added in the next book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am writing my third book of the series AND I am also working on a cocktail book! Children's book author & mixologist?!! What a combo! 📚🍸🤣
I love cooking, entertaining, and hosting people in my home, so I wanted to create something that shared my joy for that as well.

I love my family deeply, and being a mom will always be my greatest role!

With the school year about to start, this is a really good episode to listen to with your kids. Teach your kids to be the helpers and the creators of an inclusive and accessible world!!!

This 15-minute episode is a great tool to have this conversation with your family, friends, and colleagues. I get asked all the time about the appropriate way to communicate with Hannah. Always, always presume competence and talk to her the way that you would any 10-year-old girl. We all have different ways of communicating (words, sounds, eyes, hands, body language, technology, AAC, etc.) If you build relationships with people, you will quickly understand their communication needs.

Our children will be the future leaders in government, policy-making, building parks and infrastructures, etc. I want them to know Hannah so that they will work to create a world that includes all.

I cannot believe we have 15 days until the first day of school!!!

Honestly, I’m having mixed emotions. I feel like this summer has flown by. I can’t seem to get much done with the kids home, however, the start of another school year means they are one year closer to leaving me! 😭😭😭😭

I will have an 8th grader, 5th grader, and kindergartner. What about you? Are you ready? Are they ready???
