Here’s what worked best for me in order of importance:
- The right temperature - If she’s too cold or too hot she’d always wake up early. Every baby is different but Neriah sleeps better when she’s a little warmer so I keep her room at 77-78 degrees for her nap time. I’ve scheduled our rheem_air to that temperature on low fan speed during her nap time from 12-3pm. Works like a charm!
- Consistent nap-time routine. I didn’t realize this one for the longest time. I used to not even change her into PJs for her nap, and would let her nap next to me on our bed. Going through the same routine and keeping her room dark to simulate night sleep helped a lot.
- Consistent food/sleep schedule. I’m not the most schedule-driven person but when it comes to Neriah, I stick to schedules religiously (whenever possible of course it gets harder when we travel). She eats and sleeps at exactly the same times every day, so as soon as it hits 12pm she gets sleepy, like clockwork.
- Outdoor time. This one got us from 2 to 3 hour naps! Getting a good hour or two of outdoor activity is so important for good sleep. Yes our kids can get quite exhausted in the playroom too but I think the fresh air hits different!
