Do you have trouble falling sleeping or staying asleep? Are you grumpy or can't focus during the day because of your sleep habits? OR do you have AMAZING sleep habits and want to share your strategies with other teens? YOU CAN BE ON THE PANEL!

Join us as we welcome our expert moderator Bernadette Lecza, Research Associate with the Mood Disorders Research Program at Yale University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry.

We will be discussing sleep habits and how it effects our mood.
The Yale Mood Disorders Research Program (MDRP), directed by Dr. Hilary Blumberg, is dedicated to understanding the causes of mood and related disorders, and su***de risk, over the lifespan. The MDRP brings together a multi-disciplinary group of scientists from across the Yale campus in a highly collaborative research effort to generate new and improved methods for early detection and treatment to reduce the suffering of mood disorders and su***de. The MDRP and Kids Are Talking® are partnering together to find creative ways to open up the conversation and reduce the stigma of mental illness. The MDRP is currently conducting free 12 week therapy studies for individuals ages 13-29 years experiencing mood symptoms and have a parent with bipolar disorder (BD) or may have depression or BD, who are compensated up to $540 for participating. There are also studies for individuals ages 40 and up with BD. For more information, please call or email Erin at 203-737-2507 [email protected] or Bernadette at 203-737-2868 [email protected]. "Some of us are open and honest with our close friends about our challenges and feelings, and some of us are more private. There is no “right” way to share what you’re going through — every friendship or relationship is different. Sharing more about your personal life may help you feel closer to people, but it may also open the possibility of your friend sharing information with others against your wishes.

When it comes to sharing information about your mental health, it’s important to decide in advance what you’re most comfortable with. It may be helpful also to consider why you want to share the information, for example:
• To show that you have common experiences with someone
• To ask for help
• To gain empathy and compassion from someone
• To explain your actions or behavior

For example, if your friends invite you to a party but you are uncomfortable going because of your anxiety, it might be helpful for them to understand why you declined the invite. The same thing happens with other health conditions. If you have a food allergy, there may be certain places that don’t make sense for you to go eat.

Think about what you want to accomplish, or what you expect from your friends as a response (but be careful not try to mind-read and assume negative thoughts), before starting a conversation about your mental health. The choice is always yours about what you share and with whom you share it."

A powerful message about depression.

"I would just say hope is just pretending to believe in something until one day you don’t have to pretend any more," former Buckeyes player Harry Miller said.

Are you using filters on your selfies? Studies are finding this might be bad for your mental health. Thanks Newport Institute for this valuable research!

Research on filters and mental health reveals that the further our selfies get from how we really look, the worse we feel about ourselves.

Do you want to help us make a difference in the lives of today’s youth and their mental health? We are looking for partners, sponsors and panelists.

COVID exacerbated the mental health of our youth because they were forced to socially isolate, distance-learn and experienced loss of loved ones, routines, and relationships. In the State of the Union, President Biden mentioned how social media sites are having a negative impact on our children. That is why Kids Are Talking is a movement that will lead the way for a positive alternative to toxic social media and offer kids a safe venue for having open and honest conversations.
