Our inspiration for Rabble this week is Otto the Rabble Rousing Octopus. Recently, Otto amazed the aquarium staff in Coburg (a town in which Otto is situated in Germany) by rearranging his environment to be more to his liking, throwing rocks and squirting water at overhead lights in order to turn them off.
Cephalopods, such as octopuses, are known for their incredible problem-solving abilities. They can open jars with their suckers, disassemble mazes, and recognize patterns.
These creatures are capable of learning from observation, and can make decisions based on their environment. They can remember their environment and quickly adapt to new situations.
Scientists believe that cephalopods are so smart because of the large number of neurons in their brains. They are highly adaptive and can outsmart even their predators.
Cephalopods are one of the most intelligent creatures on Earth and they continue to amaze us with their problem-solving abilities.
Otto is our mascot for the foreseeable future because this example is a microcosm of how easily we activists can make a change in our immediate environment. Join Rabble today and raise some hell like Otto.
Nowadays, the people are coming up with new ways to keep Otto occupied, like giving him a chessboard. He always adapts to his surroundings, but as soon as a chessboard is in there, it's just black, white, black, white. So, that keeps him entertained for quite a while. But one time, he just didn't want the chessboard, and he just threw it out of the aquarium.

I'm so inspired by Isam Dart, the Black Cowboy of the 1800s. He was born a slave, but eventually gained his freedom and became a successful rancher, horse trader, and businessman. He paved the way for many African Americans in the West and is an amazing example of resilience and strength.
Can you see yourself volunteering? Here are some ways that you can get involved locally.
Can you imagine 30 people supporting 250 children? Or 3 women bringing electricity to 1000 residents. Volunteers make these incredible feats possible.
That’s what the volunteers at Children Heard and Seen (CHAS), an Oxfordshire-based charity, do. This tight-knit group supports children with one imprisoned parent to reduce the harm, shame, and isolation that come with it.
The District of Toledo, Belize, is far away from the national electricity grid and why till 2022, residents there didn’t have electricity. 3 indigenous women changed all that. Using their training as solar engineers, these volunteers installed solar panels in 4 different indigenous communities in Southern Belize.
If you’re willing to share your time, expertise and skills, you’ll find a vast need in your community that you can help meet — it doesn’t matter what you do or how small you think your action is.
Just think about what you’re passionate about and how you can contribute, and just jump in. Can you volunteer a few hours a week at a soup kitchen? Do admin work for a homeless shelter? Pick up trash in your local park? Organize a fundraiser for the animal shelter? It all counts.
There are many organizations where you can look for volunteer opportunities, such as:
VolunteerMatch
JustServe
DoSomething
Catchafire
All for Good
GozAround
Idealist
GivePulse
Jumpstart
And Rabble (https://www.rabble.io/). We are a social impact discovery platform that will help you locate and participate in community action in your neighborhood or start your own local initiatives, all while being rewarded for your work. Join our community and make a difference in yours.

How can we support each other as activists?
Did you know that a major cause of burnout and dropout amongst activists is not lack of results but less-than-perfect relationships with other activists?
Our work often requires us to seek out the unsafe, be bombarded with bad news, and encounter horrific violence. Activists have to regularly face discouragement, exhaustion and failure, leading to grief, anger, and frustration. We need to individually and collectively deal with these feelings.
By supporting each other, we can:
Reclaim our sense of control and power and focus on our work.
Make room for despair and anger and have the support to move beyond those feelings.
Share skills, strategies and ideas to make our work more impactful.
Strengthen our sense of community and acknowledge our interdependence.
Support can take many forms, such as:
Emotional support includes encouragement and validation, checking up on physical and mental well-being, and allowing space to express feelings.
Support for actions includes helping discuss strategy, clarify goals and show up during physical events.
Educational support looks like sharing knowledge or skills, holding discussions, sharing resources, attending seminars or events or even reading the same articles and books.
Lastly, here are a few quick tips for showing up for another activist:
Maintain confidentiality — the most crucial element in building trust and openly sharing thoughts.
Be a good listener —allow the other person to speak without needing to respond.
Don’t get sidetracked — keep to what the other person wants to share.
Show emotional and physical support — find out what they need the most from you and show up accordingly.
Don’t give a sales pitch — you’ve demarcated that time to support someone, don’t try to recruit them to your cause.
Don’t shy away from deeper feelings — even if (especially if) they’re controversial. Keep an open mind.

How do we protest to get the things we want Protesters stood their ground for over six years before the Keystone XL pipeline became illegal. Activists fought for 10+ months to defeat the Dakota Access Pipeline. Protesting is powerful but often hard-won. To get the results we want from our actions, we must recognize that the ultimate goal is to influence the people making the decisions. It's a difficult task given that if the leaders don't see the importance of our issue, they'll strengthen their position to disavow our work. However, there's evidence that longer and louder protests result in government action. Daniel Q. Gillion, a sociologist at the University of Pennsylvania, says, "On average, every time a politician becomes informed of 10 protest events happening in their district, they become 1 percent more likely to support a bill that favors a protester's position." 1 Every protest starts with emotions that spur individuals to take action. But for protesting to lead to social change, we have to direct our emotions and energy into effective tactics. Here are a few ways to do that: Have a clear message — outline what change you want to see as a result of your work. Don't worry about having a leader; focus on the direction you need to take to reach your goals. Work with others who support your vision, and find allies fighting for similar causes. Think of the men at the Roe V. Wade protests or the LGBTQ community that showed up during the Women's Marches. Create a collective identity. It drives belonging, connectedness, community, better engagement and longer commitment. Do the work, do your own research, and don't depend on others to inform or sway you. Protesting is physically and emotionally demanding — prepare yourself accordingly. Know your rights as an organizer, attendee, or while being stopped by police. The ACLU outlines it here: https://buff.ly/2Xqx9tP. Protesting is part of democracy; it's civic engagement. It's the first step in a dialogue with those making the decisions. Join the Rabble community to learn more about protesting and how to make your actions count.

Self-Care is immensely important for everyone, but the toll that fighting against injustice can take is much greater. It is so much more important to make sure that care is given to the activists, artists, and organizers who need it.
The stuff we are going to do in the New Year is gets my heart pumping.
Earth is not here for our entertainment.
How do we make a difference? We form a line in the sand and say “No More!” We will no longer treat our planet like a resource for profit. We will no longer leave the future in the hands of the greedy corporations. We will no longer wait for the approval of those who do not wish to see the destruction they create.

Katherine Johnson was an AfricanAmerican mathematician who worked at NASA and was an integral part of the American space program. She made groundbreaking contributions to the United States space program and was responsible for calculating the trajectories for the flight of the first American astronaut to orbit the earth, and the 1969 Apollo 11 mission that first put a man on the moon. Johnson was also the first woman to receive credit as an author of a research report at NASA. Her dedication and hard work paved the way for more women and people of color to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics and science. #BlackFutureMonth #blackhistory
