Join Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant, Jim Gillies, and world-leading expert on animal behaviour, Dr. Susan Friedman on the difference between impulse control and stimulus control in dogs. Do you find yourself wondering whether your dog's behaviour issues are a result of a lack of impulse control or or as a consequence of stimulus control?

In this short video, we explore the critical differences between impulse control and stimulus control in dogs. We delve into the nuances of each concept, discussing how they relate to a dog's behaviour, and the role each plays in modifying that behaviour. We also examine the common misconceptions around impulse control and how it can often be mistaken for stimulus control.

Hi everyone,

I'm delighted to confirm the next guest on the podcast...

Sarah Owings has been kind enough to join us on Tuesday 14th September at 10am PST/6pm UK-time.

Sarah and I will be discussing specifics about what errorless teaching vs trial and error teaching looks like when working with dogs. We will also be discussing stimulus control/influences.

Sarah Owings is an early childhood educator turned animal trainer. She is a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner, and has been working as a teacher of people and animals for over 20 years. She specializes in learner-centric applications of behavioral principles, and is passionate about transforming the lives of challenging learners--as well as the lives of the people that care for them. As an international speaker and regular contributor to online training forums, she is known for her innovative approaches to tough behavior problems and her compassionate and insightful teaching.

Sarah has been a popular guest on podcasts such as CogDog Radio, Animal Training Academy, Equiosity, and The Dog Real Talk. She has written articles for Clean Run magazine on topics such as stimulus control, release cues, and toy-related cues. Her current interests include reframing concepts like “impulse control,” operationalizing concepts like “trust,” the science of cues, and encouraging trainers to embrace a philosophy of “brave learning.” She is a member of the ClickerExpo faculty, an instructor for Cyber Scent Online, a tutor for Tromplo. In the past she has been an advisor to the Glendale Humane Society in Los Angeles and Marin Humane in Novato, CA. She is also an avid nose work competitor, currently competing at the Elite level in NACSW in the United States with her Labrador retriever, Tucker.

Sarah lives in Petaluma, California, and shares her days with her two life-changing dogs, Tucker and Zoë, and her life-changing husband, Fred. Learn more about Sarah on her page, at Cyber Scent Online, or at Tromplo.com.

Hope to see you all then.
