Pointers

• Zimbabwe is ready to host the SADC Summit, with various preparations underway. Preparatory meetings between various ministries and officials from the SADC Secretariat have been held. President Mnangagwa has also reiterated Zimbabwe’s readiness to work for the development of the region as the incoming Chair of SADC. Police have assured the nation that peace and security will be maintained, and any form of dissent will be dealt with to ensure a successful hosting of the summit.

• Meanwhile, the construction of other support infrastructure in Mt. Hampden, is nearing completion. This includes the a dedicated 12.8 kilometre 11KV line from Mt. Hampden to the New Parliament; civil works including roads and water systems.

• One hundred and fifty companies from the SADC region are expected to participate at the event, comprising private sector players in the agro-processing, mineral beneficiation, pharmaceutical, financial, consumer and capital goods, women and youth, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and infrastructure sectors. The event recognises the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in driving growth and innovation in the region's manufacturing sector.

• President Mnangagwa is on record saying that the industrialisation week will provide a platform for stakeholders to share opportunities, ideas and experiences on driving industrialisation and economic transformation in the SADC region, through innovation.

• Specifically, this opportunity will allow Zimbabwe to showcase its significant progress under the Heritage Based Education 5.0 philosophy, which is driven by the country's innovation hubs and industrial parks, and aimed at modernizing and industrializing the nation.

• It also comes at a time when Government recently established the long-awaited National Venture Capital Company (NVCF), which will provide the requisite support to give impetus to the ongoing innovation and modernisation thrust. NVCF seeks to provide venture capital to early-stage businesses and start-ups with high growth potential. The NVCF was established as part of the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP) and the broader vision of achieving an upper middle-income economy by 2030. The fund is open to innovative minds and start-ups across Zimbabwe.

• The event aims to promote innovation and unlock opportunities for sustainable economic growth and development in the SADC region. It also provides a platform for the private sector and policymakers to interact and engage in discussions.

It’s all smiles at Murambinda schools
…as President Mnangagwa’s inclusive policy bears fruits

The 15th Cabinet session was presented with a comprehensive report by Vice President Colonel (Retired) K.C.D. Mohadi, Chairperson of the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments, reviewing the successful hosting of the 2024 Children's Party and the 44th Independence Day Celebrations. The report highlighted the significant progress made in line with President Mnangagwa's inclusive vision of 'leaving no one and no place behind', which has yielded numerous developments and initiatives aimed at promoting national unity, social cohesion, and equal opportunities for all Zimbabweans.

Pointers

• Since the beginning of the Second Republic, a conscious effort has been made to transform the way national events are organized. President Mnangagwa has actively promoted the decentralization of national events, ensuring that every region benefits and no area is left behind. This approach was exemplified in the hosting of the 2024 Children's Party and Independence Day Celebrations at Murambinda Growth Point in Buhera District, which showcased significant infrastructural advancements and left a lasting impact on the community.

• The hosting schools, Murambinda A Primary, Murambinda B Primary and Murambinda B Secondary benefited through the state of the art soccer pitch. The soccer pitch has changing rooms built to the standard of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA). Apart from the soccer pitch, a classroom block was constructed, while existing buildings at the three schools were also spruced up.

• Murambinda Growth Point also benefitted through the establishment of 30 business units. The business units will benefit the community, while fostering the entrepreneurial mindset within the populace. This resonates well with the direction taken by the Second Republic as it is set to attain Vision 2030.

• A total of 88 boreholes were drilled in Buhera District, as part of championing the Presidential Rural Development Programme, with water being reticulated on 17 piped water schemes. The development signifies that the Second Republic is walking the talk as it puts words into practice. President Mnangagwa envisions a situation where no one is left without water.

• During the same events, legacy orchards were established at Murambinda A Primary and Murambinda B Secondary Schools. The orchards will serve as demonstration plots that will contribute to the food and nutrition status of the surrounding community. These orchards were established in the spirit of ensuring food security and nutrition as espoused in the NDS1.

• The developments were not only limited to the schools where the events were held. Thirty-four other schools across Manicaland Province were identified for the establishment of legacy plantations where a cumulative 44 000 trees will be planted on 51.7 hectares. This attests to the zeal by the Second Republic to see to it that development is inclusive and wholesome. Surely no one and no place is left behind under the able leadership of President Mnangagwa.

• In line with the National e-Learning Strategy, a pilot project targeting 10 schools first was mooted. His Excellency the President has given direction of 1 000 computers to Manicaland Province schools. This also resonates with technological advancement, while preparing learners for the future technologically advanced world. The Second Republic is hands on to ensure that no one and no place is left behind through the decentralization of all national events.

Clive Malunga's Misguided Priorities

Jenaguru Arts Centre founder and musician Clive Malunga is misdirecting his efforts by inciting Zimbabweans, particularly the youth, to revolt against the Government. In an interview with Nehanda Radio on May 22, 2024, Malunga urged Zimbabwean youth to demand change from the Government through an uprising against the ruling elite. He further suggested that Zimbabwean youth should draw inspiration from their West African counterparts, who have successfully ousted leaders in the past.

Pointers

• Since 1980, Zimbabweans have been holding elections without issue, electing new leaders peacefully. Clive Malunga should be reminded that Zimbabweans value peace, and this prevailing peace should not be disrupted by self-serving politicians like him.

• Under the leadership of President E.D. Mnangagwa and the Second Republic, Zimbabweans have witnessed significant developments across the country. It is surprising, if not confusing, that someone like Clive Malunga fails to acknowledge this progress.

• Clive Malunga should focus on his Jenaguru music genre and leave politics to the politicians. However, if he feels compelled to effect change, he should join politics himself rather than inciting others, especially young people, to engage in violent acts.

• The political landscapes of West Africa and Southern Africa are distinct, and Malunga should cease comparing the two. Southern Africa has no history of violent leadership changes, and Zimbabweans should not be misled by individuals like Malunga into adopting tactics that go against the regional norms of peaceful leadership transitions. Zimbabwean youths should not be swayed into defying SADC's established methods of changing leaders.

• President E.D. Mnangagwa has an open-door policy, inviting those with constructive ideas to contribute to the country's development. It is perplexing that Clive Malunga, a prominent musician and founder of Jenaguru Arts Centre, fails to engage with President Mnangagwa if he believes he has ideas that can positively impact the country.

Celebrating African Unity and Zim's contributions to the continent's liberation and progress

Zimbabwe is joining the rest of the continent in celebrating Africa Day. This day marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later became the African Union. This year's Africa Day will be celebrated under the theme "Educate an African fit for the 21st century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa. By commemorating Africa Day, Zimbabwe reaffirms its dedication to African unity, solidarity and progress while honouring its own history and contributions to the continent’s liberation and development

Pointers

• Africa Day, observed on May 25, holds profound significance for Zimbabwe as it marks the anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity's (OAU) founding in 1963, which later evolved into the African Union (AU). From Zimbabwe's perspective, this day embodies the spirit of unity and solidarity that defines the continent's collective journey towards independence, self-determination, and economic liberation. This solidarity was powerfully demonstrated through the widespread and resounding calls from African nations for the removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe, showcasing the continent's unwavering support for one another in the face of adversity.

• Zimbabwe pays tribute to its own liberation struggle and the immense sacrifices made by its people, in solidarity with other African nations, to achieve freedom from colonial rule. This shared struggle for independence and self-determination is a testament to the resilience and determination of the African people. Zimbabwe's liberation war, fought until 1979, was a pivotal moment in the country's history, marked by bravery, sacrifice, and ultimate triumph over colonial oppression. As Zimbabwe celebrates Africa Day, it honours the memory of its national heroes and heroines, as well as the countless others who fought and died for the freedom and unity of the continent. This commemoration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving African heritage and continuing the struggle for economic, political, and social liberation.

• Africa Day reinforces Zimbabwe's unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism, a philosophy that advocates for African solidarity, self-determination, and empowerment. By embracing this ideology, Zimbabwe reaffirms its dedication to finding African solutions to African problems, rather than relying on external interventions or solutions imposed by others. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among African nations, allowing them to address their unique challenges and harness their collective potential. Moreover, Zimbabwe's commitment to Pan-Africanism strengthens regional integration, promoting economic cooperation, political unity, and social cohesion across the continent. Through this shared vision, Zimbabwe and its African counterparts can build a more prosperous, peaceful, and united Africa, where the rich cultural heritage and diverse talents of its people can flourish.

• Africa Day shines a spotlight on the crucial need for economic empowerment and development, perfectly aligning with Zimbabwe's aspirations for economic growth and prosperity. This momentous occasion also honors and celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Africa, which Zimbabwe proudly enriches with its own unique and vibrant heritage. By acknowledging and embracing this cultural diversity, Africa Day promotes cross-cultural understanding, exchange, and cooperation, ultimately strengthening the continent's social fabric. As Zimbabwe joins in the celebrations, it reaffirms its commitment to harnessing the economic potential of its people and showcasing its cultural treasures to the world.

IMF welcomes ZiG
Zimbabwe's new gold-backed currency, the ZiG, has been welcomed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as an "important" step. The IMF plans to visit Zimbabwe next month to assess the performance of the ZiG, which was launched last month.

Pointers

• The IMF's endorsement of the ZiG is a positive development and endorsement. The IMF views the move as a crucial step towards economic recovery and stability in Zimbabwe. According to the IMF, the ZiG’s introduction represents a major step forward, supported by important monetary, currency, and fiscal policy measures. Indeed, the introduction of the ZiG is a master stroke that will mark an historic significant development in Zimbabwe's efforts to stabilize its economy.

• Zimbabwe has been unable to access financing from prominent international lenders like the IMF for over 20 years due to its failure to service its debt obligations to various creditors. The IMF's endorsement may potentially pave the way for future financing opportunities.

• The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) endorsement serves as a significant seal of approval, offering international recognition of Zimbabwe's concerted efforts to reform and revitalize its economy. This recognition can have a profound impact on investor confidence, as it signals to the global community that Zimbabwe is a viable and attractive investment destination. As a result, the country can expect to see an increase in foreign investment, which can inject much-needed capital into key sectors, stimulate economic growth, and create new opportunities for trade and commerce. Furthermore, the IMF's endorsement can also enhance Zimbabwe's credibility and reputation on the global stage, making it more attractive to international partners and investors, and paving the way for increased trade and economic cooperation.

• The IMF plans to visit Zimbabwe next month to assess ZiG performance. The planned visit will further provide the Washington based lender with critical information that will inform its decision on Zimbabwe. Of note is that the planned visit comes the IMF delegation, led by Wojciech Maliszewski, completed a critical mission to Zimbabwe in February 2024, where it called for the need for sweeping economic reforms to tackle pressing issues such as high inflation, currency volatility, and unsustainable debt. The current economic conditions indicate a promising trajectory, aligning with the recommended reforms. The situation on the ground suggests a favorable outlook, with tangible progress evident in key economic indicators, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented reforms and paving the way for sustained growth and development.

• The endorsement comes at a significant time, as the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is currently in the process of applying for an ISO code for the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). This move is crucial for the ZiG to join the elite club of global currencies, paving the way for increased international recognition, trade, and investment. The ISO code is a globally recognized standard for currencies, and obtaining it would facilitate electronic transactions, foreign exchange trading, and other international financial operations. This development has the potential to boost Zimbabwe's economic growth, improve its global standing, and increase its participation in international trade and commerce.

Forex dealers colluding with retailers

Ever since the introduction of the ZiG, cunning forex dealers have come up with an ingenious way to subvert and sabotage the new local currency. Of late, forex traders get forex buyers’ debit cards and hoard basic commodities in large supermarkets, then in turn, sell the hoarded goods to down –town tuckshop owners in USD, which they in turn give to forex buyers. This has resulted in the emergence of empty shelves and depreciation of the ZiG on the parallel market.

Pointers
• Zimbabweans are their worst enemies. The depreciation of the ZiG on that black market as a result of speculative behaviour by forex traders is tantamount to shooting oneself in the foot.

• It is sad that supermarkets, which are not wholesalers, but retailers, are allowing hoarding of basic goods by speculators in ZiG, causing unnecessary panic buying by ordinary Zimbabweans. The ongoing blitz against forex traders have resulted in them avoiding being monitored by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) as their accounts no longer transact in ZiG as they simply use a buyer’s card without the money ever reaching their account.

• It is sad that forex dealers now camp outside supermarkets soliciting for people’s cards, and collude with till operators to reap USD from customers. This practice short-changes the supermarket and gives oxygen to parallel market trading. The Police must crack on the practice, while the Retail Association of Zimbabwe and Consumer Council of Zimbabwe should nip the immoral activities by till operators and supermarkets.

• Forex traders should be charged with economic sabotage aimed at harming the country’s economic interests. Deterrent jail sentences of up to 10 years in prison should be mandatory to stop the saboteurs.
