Michael Shrieve is most known in the mainstream as the drummer for the original incarnation of Santana, and to a lesser extent as drummer for Prog rockers Automatic Man, for the Power Pop outfit Novo Combo and a hard rockin' album with Sammy Hagar, Neal Schon and Kenny Aronson. Over the past 35+ years, Shrieve has led a brilliant career as leader and composer, primarily in the areas of electronic music and what I call "dark jazz", with albums that included personnel such as Klaus Schulze, Steve Roach, David Torn, Mark Isham, Shawn Lane, Bill Frisell and Jonas Hellborg.
Michael Shrieve’s new recording "Drums of Compassion" is not merely an album; it's an odyssey that began two decades ago inspired by the Dalai Lama's call for a Time of Compassion, with a nod to the title of Nigerian Percussionist Babatunde Olatunji's classic album from 1959, "Drums of Passion", which is one of the first records to popularize African Music to the Western World. The album boasts an ensemble of musical virtuosos and soundmasters, including Jeff Greinke, Babatunde Olatunji, Jack DeJohnette, Zakir Hussain, Airto Moreira, Trey Gunn, Amon Tobin and others. Their collective genius creates a tapestry of rhythmic brilliance that transcends conventional music boundaries, offering listeners an immersive sonic experience.
