Why Block the Road?

Our reporter Romy van Baarsen reflects on her participation with Extinction Rebellion and the experiences of activists striving to make a difference. She shares her personal experience and reflections from when she joined Extinction Rebellion's monumental A12 highway blockade in The Hague, when she stood among thousands, driven by a shared pain for our planet.

After 27 days of A12 blockade and more than 9,000 arrests, the blockade sparked a political shift, forcing discussions on fossil subsidies into the limelight. Romy delves into the nuances of nonviolent protest, the shared pain that motivates climate activists, and the impact of their tireless efforts.

For Mavin, the globetrotting reporter, Bibi Timmerman, pens her ongoing series of life lessons. Recognizing that profound wisdom often resides within the ordinary people one encounters on the streets, she has taken to approaching individuals with a simple yet profound question: What is your biggest life lesson? This time she finds lifelessons in Paris.

Lessons from a Parisian Night 🇫🇷✨

On a chilly Parisian night, amidst the buzz of the city, our reporter Bibi Timmerman crossed paths with a man named Gregory, who shared two profound life lessons with her.

1️⃣ The Power of Truth: Gregory's first lesson is simple but incredibly powerful - never lie. He speaks from personal experience about the loneliness and darkness that come with dishonesty. He was once caught in a web of lies, inventing a fake identity and job. It took him a while, but he found the courage to come clean and reclaim his authenticity. Honesty saved him, and it's a lesson we all learn as children, but sometimes need to revisit as adults.

2️⃣ The Magic of Kindness: Gregory's second lesson is all about kindness. Living in a city known for its toughness, he found that kindness is a remarkable strength. Being nice, polite, and kind can lead to extraordinary connections and situations. In a world that often emphasizes strength and dominance, kindness is a superpower that shouldn't be underestimated. It's what helped Gregory build a network of sincere and honest people.
Two lessons that might seem unrelated, but I felt that they're the keys to a fulfilling life.

Mavin’s tip of the day! The World Press Photo Exhibition is currently showing around the world. One of the projects that caught our attention is photography project called Net-Zero Transition by documentary photographer Simone Tramonte.

Documentary photographer Simon Tramonte was recently featured in the World Press Photo exhibition. His long-term photography project called Net-Zero Transition documents how the European Union is going to achieve its goals of cutting greenhouse emissions by at least 55 % by 2030, and reduce to net-zero by 2050. The most demanding challenge of humankind is to find solutions for the climate crisis. The photographer documents this arduous task by showing the innovations around Europe that are developed by humans to tackle this task.

The series presents an impressive overview of this collective effort. By highlighting different projects one can get a sense of the massive scale of this undertaking. Though it can induce a feeling of dread by the challenge, it also -perhaps mostly- inspires and gives hope: human resourcefulness and collective action can bring about massive change. We highly recommend to check out his work on this important topic.

This week marks eight years since Aylan Kurdi was buried at the age of three. Aylan's father, who also lost his wife and older son in the shipwreck, said at the time, "Let these be the last to die, and may their deaths not be in vain."

What has changed in that time? Where do we stand now? We've written an article about it in which European Parliament Member Tineke Strik shares her vision. Spoiler alert: it's not very optimistic, although there is a glimmer of hope.

Mavin’s tip of the day!

A new short documentary series focussing on global businesses who are prioritizing climate change innovation.

In six short episodes of a few minutes each, they cover the future of flight, buildings, transportation, water, farming and forests. With beautifully shot scenes, and a positive tone, solutions are discussed and what impact businesses can have if they change their policies.

In an interview, one of the directors said ‘’I think we have to break through the doom-and-gloom bubble, because we’re all paralyzed by it. We all think there is nothing we can do, that climate change is inevitable and that’s what I think we were tackling with this film – showing that there are solutions and showing how folks are out there striving to make things better, instead of just talking about how bad it is.’’

The series depicts the work that is already being done now and uses a personal approach, by featuring people who are working on the ground towards solutions. It is inspiring to see what kind of innovation is there and how it is being utilized by large businesses.

Her burnout acted as a catalyst for a change. Reflecting on these times, she realised a lot needs to be changed in the mentality and culture of companies. Allowing employees more flexibility and the space to organise their own day and work on their wellbeing, will improve productivity.

She founded On.Purpose Studio to achieve real change in company culture.

Mavin’s tip of the day!

A radical Prescription for long-term thinking in the book ‘The Good Ancestor’ by Roman Krznaric. Philosopher and co-founder of The School of Life, Krznaric sees short-term thinking as the root of our problems today. The future generation is not taken into account due to this, thus suffering hugely from shortsighted decisions today. A major problem this pertains to is of course climate change.

In the book Krznaric shows how we can be a good ancestor for our future generations. Whilst they don’t have a voice or any rights today, our decisions will impact their lives massively. There will be no solution to climate change or other issues if we don’t start thinking in the long-term. He celebrates the time rebels who are reinventing democracy, culture and economics so that we all have the chance to become good ancestors and create a better tomorrow.

You can find the book in your local bookshop.

The immigration debate is yet again in full swing, as European countries still struggle to adequately respond to the flow of asylum seekers. Today and tomorrow, EU leaders will hold a meeting to discuss immigration. A starker plea for preventing immigrants from entering Europe seems the tendency. More member states and the European Commission are voicing their readiness about raising fences around Europe’s borders.

Instead of making it as difficult as possible to enter Europe, some believe an opposing direction must be taken. Could the EU benefit from immigrants? Economists believe so.

Mavin’s tip of the day! Documentary All that Breathes by director Shaunak Sen has recently hit the cinemas.

In a profoundly moving and poetic way the relationship between humans and animals is explored in New Delhi, a city where the inhabitants have a ‘front row seat’ to the climate disaster, as the director puts it. The heavy air pollution causes birds to get ill and fall out of the sky. This apocalyptic occurrence is the motivation for the protagonists of this film: three brothers who are committed to rescuing and treating as many birds as possible. It shows the importance of small steps and perseverance and how the actions of individuals, no matter how big or small can help.

Clearing landmines remains one of the most arduous problems for the world. Wars and conflicts in places such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Egpyt, Angola left an estimated 110 million active landmines across the world.

This warfare tactic is still used in recent conflicts, such as in Ukraine, where both parties use anti-vehicle mines. Russia also deploys anti-personnel mines, since it didn’t sign the Ottawa treaty, like Ukraine did, banning the use of such mines. This is affecting the civilian population in access to civilian homes, infrastructure, transportation routes, and agricultural lands. Eastern Ukraine remains one of the areas most contaminated by landmines in the world, due to the war with Russia that started in 2014.

The United Nations estimates that if demining efforts remain the same, it might take approximately 1,100 years for all mines in the world to be cleared. Hence the need for innovative technologies to tackle this problem. The trusty method of hand-held metal detectors or trained animals to track down mines will take too long. There’s a need for innovation, especially if ambitious goals like the Landmine Free 2025 campaign are to be achieved. Click the link below and take a look at some inspiring solutions and successes over the past years.

Dutch media outlet NOS reported yesterday that due to the overwhelming amount of negative news, more people decided to shut off from it. Especially among the younger generation until 35 years old, people decide not to follow the news anymore, because it is inducing stress and negative emotions. Experts say negative news is not bad per se, but the balance is off.

This was exactly the reason that Mavin Magazine was founded, to offer a contribution in the balancing of positive and negative news in the media landscape, in which the positive side of developments is traditionally underrepresented by the media. Mavin’s tip of the day!

Now streaming on Netflix is the documentary In Her Hands by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen. It follows one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors of Afghanistan, Zafira Ghafari, the youngest to hold her position. An especially relevant and poignant watch since the Taliban announced last week that girls are banned from attending university, furthering the exclusion of women from Afghan society who already couldn’t attend secondary school and suffering more restrictions leading to an almost complete exclusion of public life.

Zafira takes an incredibly brave, fierce and defiant stance towards stifling conservative social norms. Advocating for women empowerment and girls following an education is one of her main points. She remains almost unfazed by the severe discrimination and many death threats she receives, to try and inspire Afghan citizens for more equality. Ever since the Taliban took over the country in August 2021, the situation has rapidly deteriorated for its citizens. The heartbreaking movie makes the immense pain and suffering of this tragedy palpable, it goes beyond the impersonal headlines that covered the event of the fall of Kabul but have largely forgotten Afghanistan since then.
