Some stories are long sagas, some have more plot twists than hairpin bends on a mountainous road. This story lives in a moment- a moment that speaks volumes about our world without its main character saying a single word.

Akhbaar Mein Naam by Yashpal
When I read this story I was moved by its simplicity and its gentle humour. Then I began to look for more information about the writer, Yashpal. I was astounded. What I found out could be a whole episode in itself. Yashpal could be the hero of an action packed thriller! His life story was one of stealth attacks, days spent as a fugitive, betrayal by friends, prison time, shoot-outs and a romance that withstood the test of time.
And then he gave it all up and settled down to a writer’s life.

Saadat Hasan Manto : Khali Botal, Bhara Hua Dil by Krishan Chander
*StoryJam Episode 16* Saadat Hasan Manto: Khali Botal, Bhara Hua Dil by Krishan Chander
______________________
They say Manto died of alcoholism. They also tried him for obscenity and sent him to a mental hospital. The real problem with Manto was not alcohol or mental health, it was that he couldn't look the other way, he didn’t bother about getting along and he couldn’t care less for labels. In short, he did not have what it takes to be a popular, sought after intellectual. Yet, every now and then one reads something about Manto written by one of his friends or colleagues and it gives a glimpse into the beautiful tormented soul that he was. Krishan Chander, Manto's friend and a pillar among progressive writers, knew Saadat Hasan Manto as only a few had.
When Manto died, Krishan Chander wrote this homage to Manto where he recalls their days of penury in Delhi and talks of how you only had to scratch the surface of Manto’s stubborn protests to see his love flow with abandon, like blood.

Here's a little friday distraction. In an ideal scenario, this should have been hummed by Bhupinder with a guitar strumming in the background. Since that’s a little hard to put together, here’s a poem I like in my voice. I hope you like it too.
If you haven't already, please subscribe to my channel on Youtube. It will help me spread this labour of love farther. Here's the link to this poem -- https://youtu.be/WisTYqoVvOw

There are few people who can write with as much wit and fearlessness as Harishankar Parsai. No one was spared from going under the magnifying glass of his satire. Heaven knows, the world today needs more Parsais.
