UK GOVT MUST AVOID LINKING FISHING WITH ENERGY IN ‘RESET’ OF EU RELATIONS

Aberdeenshire North and Moray East MP Seamus Logan has urged the UK Government to avoid any moves to link fishing with energy in any trade negotiations with the EU.

The SNP MP spoke of fears that the European Union will use the new Labour government’s desire to renegotiate the UK’s trade deal with the EU as leverage to secure greater access for EU fishing fleets to UK waters in the pre-2026 negotiations.

Speaking during a debate in Westminster Hall on the Future of Fishing post-2026, Seamus Logan said:

“The constituency that I represent, Aberdeenshire North and Moray East, hosts two of the largest fishing ports in the UK at Peterhead and Fraserburgh, with Aberdeenshire noted for the highest fishing GVA at £153million in 2021, the latest year in which figures are available. That’s equivalent of 48% of the entire Scottish fishing GVA. The corresponding UK GVA figure is 0.03% of the UK economy, the Scottish figure is 0.21%, that is 7 x that figure, it’s important to bear that in mind. £321million is the value to the Scottish economy, it employs 4241 people, again based on the 2021 figures.

“Now fishing is part of the DNA of our coastal communities. The sea of disappointment that these communities have faced from the previous government’s broken Brexit promises has cost them dearly, leaving the UK in a far weaker position to negotiate on fishing rights than when we still had a seat at the table in the European Union.

“These fishing communities are facing huge economic challenges due to the loss of freedom of movement, principally fish processors and perhaps to a lesser extent the catching sector are facing labour shortages alongside new trade barriers erected by a Tory Brexit deal that was supported by Labour at the time. Trade barriers are estimated at 30% in increase in transport costs and a 50% increase in packaging costs. It is feared that the European Union will use the new Labour government’s desire to renegotiate the UK’s trade deal with the EU as leverage to secure greater access for EU fishing fleets to UK waters in the pre-2026 negotiations.

“Now, with the new Labour government promising a ‘reset’ ahead of the TCA negotiations in 2026, there are serious concerns that the coupling of fishing negotiations with those on energy might be a problem. The potential linkage between energy and fishing in whatever deal is agreed could result in fishing communities in the North-east suffering a far worse deal after 2026. If this happens, the blame will lay squarely with the Westminster government, but it is the Scottish fishing communities that will pay the price.

“The Minister, and I agree with my colleague that he is doing an excellent job, needs to reassure these communities in my constituency and indeed across Scotland and these islands, that the UK Government will liaise with the Scottish Government and the Scottish Fisheries Groups to ensure that the best possible deal can be renegotiated when the TCA expires and that access to our waters will not become a casualty of any new trade deals.”

KAREN ADAM MSP: ONLY THE SNP WILL PROTECT FREE TUITION FOR STUDENTS ACROSS BANFFSHIRE AND BUCHAN COAST

SNP MSP Karen Adam has said that the UK Labour Government's decision to hike tuition fees in England shows that only the SNP can be trusted to protect free tuition for students in Scotland.

UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson announced on Monday that fees will increase to £9,535 per year as a freeze on tuition fees which has seen them capped since 2017/18 comes to an end under Labour.

Student Loans Company data shows students in Scotland leave university with the lowest levels of debt in the UK and an average of £31,790 less debt than students in England. Figures released earlier this year show that a staggering 1.8 million people in England and Wales are in at least £50,000 of student debt.

Record numbers of students from our most deprived areas in Scotland are going to university due to the SNP’s continued support for free tuition.

Michael Marra, Scottish Labour’s finance spokesperson, hinted earlier in the year that the party would examine models to reintroduce some form of charges in Scotland whilst new Tory leader Russell Findlay talked last week about ending free tuition in his first major speech as party leader.

SNP MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Karen Adam, said:

“Whether in Scotland, England or Wales, history has shown that under Labour governments, tuition fees go up - Labour simply cannot be trusted on tuition fees. This latest increase by the UK Government will burden a whole generation of students south of the border with even higher levels of debt.

"Throughout their time in office, even Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson didn't go as further raising tuition fees - that Keir Starmer has done so after only months in Number 10 shows exactly where his priorities lie.

“Under the SNP, we have record numbers of Scottish students securing places at our universities, and recent figures showed a rise in students from our most disadvantaged communities.

“This progress has only been made possible because the SNP abolished Labour's tuition fees when we came to office - and we will never let them be reimposed on students in Banffshire and Buchan Coast"

BREAKING: TRUMP WINS U.S. ELECTION

Americans have voted and the 47th U.S. President has been decided in a convincing victory.

Donald Trump, who was previously the 45th President, has won the election meaning he’ll be back in the Whitehouse for the second time.

According to America’s Fox News who are calling the win, whilst all votes are not yet in, President Trump has almost received the 270 electoral college votes needed to win, with Vice President Harris unable to receive the numbers to catch up.

President Trump is due to make a speech shortly from West Palm Beach, Florida.

POLICE APPEAL AFTER PETERHEAD HOMEMADE EXPLOSION

Police Scotland are appealing for the public’s help following an explosion in Peterhead last night.

Residents in the Dales Park and Meethill areas felt the effects of the explosion which took place at the side of a public footpath next to the Dales Park children’s park.

Residents reported shaking windows with some worried that a bomb had been detonated.

People as far away as the town centre also reported hearing the loud explosion.

Following the incident, local man William Holdsworth left his home to investigate and found a group of children and young teenagers along with two adult males leaving the scene of the explosion.

Filming the entire confrontation, Mr Holdsworth confronted the group asking why they had carried out such a dangerous act, before turning to the adult to enquire about his involvement.

The older male denied being involved, but was then filmed along with another man placing the remains of their home made devices into a van.

The group of kids ran away at this point whilst other onlookers had called for Police attendance.

Mr Holdsworth, who had already filmed the registration plate of the van, also captured footage of various plastic bottles and cases in the side of the vehicle, and advised the men that they could not leave whilst Police were on the way.

The pair however got in the van and drove off, knocking Mr Holdsworth and another man (Jed McGowan) to the ground who tried to prevent them leaving. The other man received treatment by paramedics.

Speaking about the incident, William Holdsworth told Buchan Live:

“I decided to intervene because I can’t help myself for the love of my town.

“I'm just happy I could help bring attention to what actually happened.”

A statement from Police Scotland said:

Sergeant Wayne Bedford said: "Around 9.20pm on Tuesday, 5 November, 2024 officers were called to reports of a collision involving a van and a pedestrian on Aalesund Road, Peterhead.

"A 33-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene.

"The driver of the vehicle left the scene.

"Prior to the crash, a large pyrotechnic device was ignited, causing damage to the nearby skatepark.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact officers via 101, quoting incident 4252 of 5 November."

DRAMA UNFOLDS AFTER EXPLOSION IN DALES PARK

Drama has unfolded in the Dales Park in Peterhead tonight.

Residents felt the effects of a large explosion in the Dales Park and Meethill areas.

One local went to investigate, filming the entire encounter which has been sent too us, and discovered an adult and a group of kids / teenagers coming from the scene. He followed them back to the car park questioning why they had let off such a huge explosion.

The kids then ran, whilst the concerned resident followed the male back to a van in the car park, where the vehicle was seen to contain various chemicals and materials.

Police were called and an attempt was made to prevent the van from leaving the scene which was unsuccessful and the concerned resident and another onlooker were pushed out of the way by the vehicle, knocking them to the ground.

The concerned resident who filmed the whole thing has posted the full video in the comments.

Emergency services are on the scene currently and police are investigating.

A separate video reportedly taken of the actual explosion has been circulating.

DRIVING BAN & COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR BLOOTOON WEST ROAD CRASH BROCH TEEN

A Fraserburgh teenager has appeared in court following a crash in Peterhead in June this year.

The then 17 year old raced through Peterhead streets which ended in the car he was driving colliding with a van, a parked car and then flipping onto its roof on the town’s West Road.

The male had been chased through the town after failing to stop for police, committing multiple driving offences.

The collision was captured on widely circulated dashcam footage.

Initially denying all charges, the male changed his plea, admitting dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

He was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and has been disqualified from driving for three and half years.

He was also placed on a supervision order for eighteen months.

KAREN ADAM MSP: “CARER SUPPORT PAYMENT ROLLOUT A MILESTONE MOMENT”

Karen Adam, MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast, has said that the nationwide rollout of the Carer Support Payment is a "milestone moment".
The Carer Support Payment, which is a payment of £81.90 per week paid by Social Security Scotland, has been introduced in phases since November 2023 and as of today is now available to people living in every local authority in Scotland.

This support is for unpaid carers who provide 35 or more hours of care a week to someone who gets disability benefits and as part of the rollout some applicants may be able to backdate their payments to the initial rollout date.

Unpaid carers perform a vital role across communities across Banffshire and Buchan Coast and the SNP Scottish Government is taking action to ensure that they have the full support that they require.

The SNP MSP for Banffshire and Buchan Coast Karen Adam has previously been vocal about her lived experience of being a carer, including as a single mother of neurodiverse children and growing up learning British Sign Language (BSL) to interpret for her Deaf father. Last year, Karen hosted an event on care in the Scottish Parliament and earlier this year brought a debate to the Scottish Parliament on Scotland's young carers.

Commenting, Karen Adam said:

“Being a carer can mean having little to no sleep. Fighting day in and day out for help. It’s being an advocate. It’s being a nurse. It’s being a taxi slash ambulance driver. It’s being an interpreter. A cook. A cleaner. It’s a day shift, but it’s also a night shift. And you’re also a student because you have to learn really quickly.

“And for some of us, it’s watching the people we care for suffer; that takes a mental and emotional toll. It’s giving up often on any kind of whatever a normal life is. That needs to be counted, and I was very moved, earlier this year, to welcome dozens of young carers to the Scottish Parliament and to lead a debate recognising the vital positive role young carers play in our society by providing kinship care.

"The nationwide rollout of the Carer Support Payment is a milestone moment for carers, delivered by the SNP Government.

"This payment of £81.90 per week will be vital to support unpaid carers across Scotland who go above and beyond to help those they look after and our wider society.

"The SNP Government developed Social Security Scotland with dignity, fairness and respect at its core - the delivering of this 14th Scottish benefit is in keeping with those principles."
