'Judgment day' in Saudi Arabia as Joshua, Ngannou tango

It's a career-defining moment for the duo of Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou as they lock horns in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in what promises to be a very feisty festival of heavy punches.

Joshua, 34, originally from Nigeria but fighting under the British flag, is aiming to reestablish himself as the top dog in heavyweight boxing after losing his belts to Ukraine's Alexander Usyk in 2021.

Successive victories against Jermaine Franklin and Otto Wallin have no doubt shown that Joshua still have some fire in his belly since losing twice to Usyk, but a victory against Ngannou, who lost controversially to WBC champion, Tyson Fury, would definitely propel him towards the top of the heavyweight ecosystem, once again.

Eteidung Asikpo Urges Students To Shun Cultism, Societal Vices, To Attain Academic Goals
..As Right Choice Redemption Int’l Schools Honours Him

The Village Head of Ekpri Nsukara Offot in Uyo Local Government Area, Eteidung Emem Denis Asikpo, has advised students at all levels of education to concentrate on their studies and shun cultism and other vices so as to accomplish their academic goals and become successful in life.

Eteidung Asikpo, who is a member of the Offot Ukwa Clan Council of Chiefs, also urged parents and guardians to pay greater attention to moulding their wards towards the right path to ensure that they don’t fall victim to bad company.

Speaking at the maiden inter-house sports competition of Right Choice Redemption International Schools in Ekpri Nsukara Offot, Uyo, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, the village head said no effort should be spared in raising disciplined, focused, honest, and educated children as they are our future leaders.

“I want to appeal to students at all levels of education to focus on their studies. Do not be enticed into cultism or to join associations that will take your attention away from your academics. Cultism has ruined the lives of students. It has also led students to early graves.

“At all times, strive towards getting the best grades in your education. Your certificates will serve as your passport to a better future.
“Do everything possible to ensure that the investment made in you by your parents, guardians, the school, and the government is not wasted," he added.

Eteidung Asikpo appreciated the school authority for honouring him by christening the Red House, which is one of the four houses in the school, “Eteidung Emem Asikpo House,” and assured the proprietor and the school authority of his support always.

He commended the school for creating a favourable environment for the proper education of children and urged them to keep up, as the village authority will readily identify with proficiently administered educational institutions in the community.

Earlier in his speech, the proprietor of Right Choice Redemption International Schools, Uyo, Pastor Emmanuel Emah, said the sterling leadership qualities and positive contributions of the village head of Ekpri Nsukara Offot, Eteidung Emem Denis Asikpo, will continue to attract commendations and accolades not only within his immediate community or local government but the state at large.

Pst. Emah said it was in recognition of the outstanding qualities of the village head that the school honoured him by naming one of the four houses involved in the inter-house sports competition after him, expressing delight at the many positive impacts the Ekpri Nsukara community and residents have enjoyed through the ingenuity and leadership of Eteidung Asikpo.

The proprietor, who described the royal father as a philanthropist and lover of development, further stated that through his selfless efforts, the community has enjoyed peace and tranquilly, even when he was the Village Youth President before ascending to the village headship of Ekpri Nsukara Offot.

At the end of the inter-house sports meet, with the theme “awakening the spirit of sportsmanship," Eteidung Emem Asikpo House emerged as the overall winner.

Highlights of the event included sporting competitions and the presentation of certificates, medals, trophies, and prizes.

HERBERT WIGWE: The man and his philosophy

Last year, in December, Herbert Wigwe moved into his new house at Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos.

A mighty, imposing edifice that speaks to his ambition and class.

It was his dream house, and so no cost was spared in building it.

A state-of-the-art house that is fully digital and automated as well.

You know the type of house where Siri and Google Assistant control the basic functionality of the property.

According to a rough estimate from those with knowledge of the property that I spoke to, over 10 billion naira were spent on the project.

And the reason why Herbert spent that much on the property was not far-fetched.

It was meant to serve as his retirement home in Lagos, so he made sure he spent money to build it.

Three weeks ago, he hosted Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and his bestie, Femi Otedola, in the new property.

They had dinner together, but before that, he took them around his new property to show the two Forbes billionaires his new acquisition.

He was a man whose palm kernel was cracked by the gods.

Little did Herbert know that it would be the last time he would be hosting Aliko Dangote and his bestie, Femi.

Herbert was a very wealthy man in his lifetime.

Before he died, he was the majority shareholder of Access Bank, as he controlled 9% of the bank.

That 9% shareholding made him the largest shareholder of Access Bank, and the shares he controls are collectively worth $54 million.

For all this humongous wealth, one thing that stood out in my book is that he loved God and then committed the wealth that God gave him to serving him and supporting his work.

Before he died, he was an active member of Adeboye's RCCG, and he worshipped with a branch of the RCCG called City of David, an upscale RCCG church in Lagos, and he was present until his death.

He worshipped with them two Sundays ago.

In 2018, the City of David had an outreach in Makoko; the budget was 800 million.

Herbert brought 500 million of the money, and the church brought the rest.

Until he died, he was paying the salaries of the choir members of City David Chuch secretly and quietly, without making a fuss about it.

The City of David has the biggest church building. for the RCCG family in Lagos, complete with a helipad, and when the project was at its infancy level, Herbert made sure that Access Bank paid for a 10-year lease of the office space to be domiciled in the building.

He did this when the church project was at the foundation, and it took 5 years after the payment for the project to be done and for the bank to occupy the space.

But he did more than this.

When the City of David ran out of funds as they were building the church building on Victoria Island, Herbert used his influence to facilitate a loan from Access Bank for his local church to complete God's project.

Three weeks ago, the city of David Church had an issue paying back a billon of naira, which was the loan Hebert facilitated back to Access Bank.

He gave the church an interest-free 1 billion naira of his money, which they are expected to pay back this year to him.

This was who Herbert was. A man who loved God and was unapologetic about it.

I have been reflecting on Herbert Wigwe's life and how empty life is since I woke up this morning, and I came to one conclusion.

Life is just fleeting.

Do your best to live your life on your terms and create enough memories.

Love the people who love you back, and touch as many souls as you can.
At the end of the day, tomorrow is not guaranteed.

LESSONS FROM VICTOR OSIMHEN’S DISALLOWED GOAL AGAINST BAFANA BAFANA

Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, scored a beautiful goal - a brilliant tap in from Bright Osayi-Samuel’s cross. Then all hell broke loose. The referee, in reviewing the build up to the goal with the help of the video assistant referee (VAR) did not only cancel the goal, he awarded a penalty to South Africa. What a reversal of fortunes! But, that, ladies and gentlemen, is life! In the local parlance they would caution you to “be careful how you dance in merriment so that you would not remind your creditors that you are owing them.” It has happened to someone you know before. Someone tops the class in a test and celebrate. But the surprised lecturer decides to recheck his script and raises the alarm - plagiarism. Scoring attracts a review, missing does not!

The truth of the matter is that if Osimhen did not score, there would have been no review and the foul would not have been detected. The match would have continued and bygones would have remained bygones and the referee would have allowed sleeping dogs to lie. We would have won that match in regulation time and would have started our celebration earlier. The score line would have been Nigeria 1, South Africa 0. As it went, poor Osimhen and the rest is history.

Exactly why the Bible says that there is a time for everything under the sun. A time to score and a time not to score. If only Osimhen knew that the goal would lead to a penalty at the other end of the field, he would have passed the ball backwards and kept the ball in play until the foul would have been thrown into the dustbin of history. But football strikers, are wired like hunters, they shoot when ever they can.

Many of them may not have read 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV) “‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial….” Sure Osimhen has the right to score goals, but on that day that goal was not beneficial. It cost us a penalty, took us into extra time and thank God we still won.

This is a lesson that even the right thing, done the right way, with the right heart, could bring unexpected and unmitigated results. Victor Osimhen is a great guy and an asset to our team. Africa’s best striker and best footballer and he did well for us. We should not blame him because we are warned in Ecclesiastes 9:12 (TLB) “A man never knows when he is going to run into bad luck. He is like a fish caught in a net, or a bird caught in a snare.”

Eminem on the Grammy award

"The Grammys will use you to market their awards, and finally give it to their favorite ones. I am not saying they should give awards based solely on views and sales, but sometimes they need to look at impact."

"There are several instances before the award show when the Grammys will call Jay Z and Beyonce, hinting that they won awards so they can attend. You could be in a category and feel confident about winning, then someone from nowhere will just win it."

"Everybody loves receiving awards for their creative work, but if they continue like that, I don't like them, and I don't care if they don't nominate me again, because I know they will not nominate me after this"

OF LARGE CHURCH BUILDINGS, GOOD INTENTIONS AND ALL OF THAT!

By Aniekpeno Mkpanang

We cruised a leisurely two hours from Abidjan into the Ivorien city of Yamoussoukro with my eyes hovering on the skyline for good reason. All I needed to see immediately in this city was a brick and metal dome sticking out of the horizon. Already I had seen countless photographs of the fabled dome and its image was now fully imprinted on the glossy paper of my subconcious pallette.

I squinted above the avenues of Yamoussoukro, ignored the deliberate landscaping and instead searched the cityscape for the anticipated dome designed to cap the stone, concrete and marble structure of a Basilica.

39 years ago, way back in 1985, I was two years into my first job as a Secondary School Teacher when the idea of building a Basilica in his home town occured to Monsieur Felix Houphet-Boigny who was then in his 25th year as President of the West African Nation of Ivory Coast, known more today by its official French appellation of Cote d'voire.

President Houphet-Boigny's intention was to not just build the Largest Church in the World in his own backyard at his hometown of Yamoussoukro (which he was also redesigning to become the new Administrative Capital of his Nation); but he set out to do it with effervescent gusto.

To superintend the ground-breaking of the ambitious project, President Houphet-Boigny had invited the then Head of the Holy Roman Church, His Holiness Pope John Paul II who had to fly 4,263 kilometers from the Vatican City to Yamoussoukro to lay the cornerstone of the envisaged Basilica.

The planned building was modelled after and designed to be bigger than what was the Largest Church in the World at that time; the Basilica of St. Peter itself in the seat of the Papacy in the Vatican City, (the World's smallest country and) Headquarters of the Catholic Faith.

Like they say in regular banter; to cut the long story short; four years after in 1989; the Apostolic edifice was completed on schedule and who else, but the Pontiff himself again flew back to Yamoussoukro on September 10, 1990 to consecrate it.

One would therefore conjecture my unbriddled excitement when I was selected to serve as a Volunteer at the 2023 African Nations Cup Tournment billed for Cote d'voire. I painstakingly made sure that during my stay in that country, I would eke out some personal time to visit the Basilica in Yamoussoukro and see the Largest Church in the World certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The concept, building and eventual commissioning of the gargantuan Basilica of our Lady of Peace had unleashed a floodgate of global attention, admiration, commendation and of course, as would be expected, a deluge of criticism, villification and condemnation. Despite the pilgrimage and tourism-anchored arguments of some protagonists, the anti-proponents held that Houphet-Boigny used much money building a Church with funds that could have been better spent.

Before my trip to Cote d'voire, I had done extensive research on the Yamoussoukro Basilica. I had spoken about it countless times in the 1980s on my erstwhile radio programme 'Something to Remember'.
Then in 2016, while in Milan for the finals of the UEFA Champions League, I took the liberty to hop over to Rome, visit the Vatican and see the Basilica of St. Peter. All of that experience added up to heighten my curiosity at the sheer prospect and priviledge of being in the position to frontally compare both iconic edifices.

Coming to Yamoussoukro was for me therefore, a once-in-a-lifetime chance to 'see things for myself' because I also surmissed somewhere along the line, that many of the arm-chair critics of the Basilica of Yamoussoukro might never have been to Ivory Coast and have only previously seen photos of the Basilica. I came therefore, not just to fathom the much pontificated wastage in building a Church, but to appraise the latter-day glory of the same Church as a much-referenced global landmark, which in all veracity, is what lured me here in the first place.

In no time, our driver made down to Rue de St. France, the elite address of the Basilica and at last, I came face to face with the Dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace; the World's Largest Chuch, looming on the horizon in all of its solemn majesty. As I stepped out of the car and walked the last few meters towards the structure, the Basilica appeared to be staring down with a stony indiference at my intrepid flirtations within its hallowed ambience.

Despite the fact that the building was criticized because of the comparison between the lavish structure and its touted impoverished surroundings, President Houphet-Boigny believed then that someday, when the die is cast, the much disparaged Basilica in his village would eventually become a front line global tourism destination and an eternal pilgrimage site for not just West African Catholics, but people of other faith who will never stop visiting Yamoussoukro from all over the world.

NDDC, Akwa Ibom State Government set template for collaboration

The Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku; Chairman, Governing Board of the NDDC, Mr Chiedu Ebie, Akwa Ibom State Representative in the Board, Apostle Abasiandikan Nkono, other States' Representatives, Directors and management staff of the Commission visited Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno at the Hilltop Mansion ahead of the Commission's two-day retreat billed to hold at the Four Points by Sheraton, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

The visit underlined the importance of synergy between the Commission and the State Government as both strive to better the lot of the State.

Chairman of the Board, Mr Chiedu Ebie, in his remarks, acknowledged the Governor's efforts to offer effective leadership and collaborating with federal agencies in order drive development to the State.

According to him, "Akwa Ibom State as one of the key states of the NDDC has turned out to be the destination for conferences, seminars etc, because of the hospitable nature of the people and the world class infrastructural prowess of the State."

This, he said, was a result of visionary and result-oriented governance in the state.

He added, "we have followed keenly the developmental strides of your administration since inception, particularly in the areas of Agriculture and Aviation sectors. Truth be told, Ibom Air has become the number one choice for most air travelers."

The Chairman explained that for the mandate of the Commission to come to fruition, "it is pertinent that we enhance collaboration with state governments and work very closely."

"We want to collaborate with you and ensure that projects that will be attracted to the state will be on need basis with inputs from the Akwa Ibom State Government," he announced.

Responding, Governor Eno appreciated the board for its resolve to partner with the State Government to achieve its mandate.

The governor however condemned what he termed "stand-alone approach of previous boards in carrying out projects in the state which did not yield good result," and hoped the current board changes the narrative.

He observed that the status of the NDDC office was not befitting of the Commission's status, and announced willingness to allocate an office at the 21 Storey Dakkada Towers to the Commission at a discounted rate.

The two-day retreat will hold at the prestigious Four Points by Sheraton in Ikot Ekpene from Friday, February 9 to Saturday, February 10, 2024.
