Majority and Minority clashes in Parliament, "The secret behind"

23/12/2021
25/02/2020

Dear NDC foot soldiers,

I have seen and read your disappointment that, under your beloved NDC, some top NPP politicians were given state scholarships under questionable circumstances.

What you need to know is that the practice is mutual. There are some very top NDC politicians who are today getting fat contracts under the NPP regime. Some of them are praying hard that the NDC does not win or return to power. Some of them are sometimes seen on TV pretending to be fighting for you. If you want to understand them, buy a ticket to Uncle Ebo Whyte's show and watch the characters.

It is called acting.

There are also some top NPP politicians who are praying for Akufo-Addo to lose because their bread will be better buttered in an NDC administration than under their own party. Do you know that some top NPP politicians took money from some top NDC politicians to campaign against the NDC in 2016? In 2020, there will be a reverse.

So?

Don't kill yourselves down there. At the top, it's much different. There's nothing wrong in being a political ball boy or girl, but you need to understand the game. You can follow partisan politics, but do so with your brains. Work hard and put God's plans for you to good use.

You and your descendants may never get a scholarship to Harvard, but you can help them live decent lives with your brains and sweat. You can break the vicious cycle of poverty if you don't spend your entire life helping others to perpetuate the virtuous circle of privilege.

It may not be your fault that you're spending your entire life singing the praise of someone who may not better than you. But it will be an indictment on you if your children and the generations after you will have to sell their conscience, swallow their pride and sing the praises of the children of the men and women whose asses you're kissing in order to survive.

Don't tie your destiny to your political party. Get a life. Get a career before jumping into the frenzied political arena.

May God grant you the grace to understand this game better so that nothing will surprise you anymore.

A few paragraph to the wise foot soldier, they say, is more than enough. You may not like the messenger, but don't ignore the message.

Yours sincerely,
Dennis Bebane copy from

Street Girls Aid trainees graduates

By Dennis Bebane
Street Girls Aid (S.Aid), a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO), has graduated 70 trainees after training them in soap making, pastry and hairdressing.

S.Aid picked up the trainees from the Scrap Yard, Old Fadama and gave them three-month training, with the support of the Deutche Geselleschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the State of North Rhine Westaphalia.

The training started from October 2019 to January 2020 was aimed at empowering the otherwise sachet water sellers from the Scrap Yard at Old Fadama with skills.

Out of the 70 graduands, 35 had soap making training, 23 hairdressing, and 12 pastry making, and they were all awarded with certificates.

Mrs Vida Asomamaning Amoako, Director, Street Girls Aid, explained that the aim of the project was to give basic skills training to female sachet water sellers at the Scrap Yard, to enhance their competencies and to improve income opportunities and employability in the informal labour market.

Mrs Amoako said as part of the training, the graduands had been taken through English Literacy classes to enable them have basic reading and writing skills.

She added that the graduands would receive start-up packages later to help them to be self-employed in their respective professions.

She urged the graduands to ensure that the larger society benefits from the skills they had acquired.

Mr Michael Quaye, Technical Advisor of the GIZ E-Waste Programme, said that the programme was initiated to strengthen the capacities for members of the informal E-Waste recycling sector in Ghana and to open up for alternative income.

“The lack of alternative sources of income for most members in this area and the E-Waste niche made the rolling out of this project necessary,” he added.

He said the project was carried out in close coordination with the project on Sustainable E-Waste Management coordinated by the GIZ.

He advised the graduands to use their acquired skills to the best of their knowledge and create a living for themselves, and change the narrative of Old Fadama.

Madam Mary Madi Vito, a Social Worker who spoke on behalf of the Director of the Department of Social Welfare, urged the graduands to take the newly acquired skills seriously in order to impact their communities.

She added that the Department appreciated the role of S.Aid and other stakeholders for their contributions to improve the quality of lives of the less privileged in the society.

Mr Mohammed Ali, Secretary of Ghana Scrap Dealers Association, noted that the graduands should maintain focus when they encountered challenges in terms of setting up their businesses and should contact their sponsors for advice.

“The inauguration that we are holding today should not end here, but should paved the way for the future. I believe there are a lot of people out there who would also want this type of training but did not get the opportunity.

“I also believe that in other places before you can go through this training you have to pay fees,” he added.

Ms Mariama Ayuba, a beneficiary who spoke on behalf of the trainees, said that they were grateful to God and the organisers, because they were jobless but they had acquired a lot of skills after the training.

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Wa, the Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP ), Mr Francis Aboagye Nyarko, said soldiers of the Operation Vanguard squad based in the region had a tip off that the gang of illegal miners equipped with gold detectors among others were operating in the forest of Dorimon in the Wa West District.

Operation

DCOP Nyarko said in the early hours of Wednesday, personnel of the Operation Vanquard squad swooped on the gang where their activities were said to be ongoing but Hammond, the ring leader of the gang who resisted arrest, sustained injuries in the scuffle that ensued and was on admission at the hospital.

He said two others who were also arrested were assisting in investigations while the remaining seven persons were on the run. He said the gold detectors and digging implements among other equipment that were being used in the operation had been confiscated.

DCOP Nyarko added that the police were, however, conducting an investigation and called on the public to assist them with any information that would lead to the arrest of the remaining gangsters.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO SUPPORTS NDC U-TURN ON REFERENDUM FOR LACK OF BROAD, NATIONAL CONSENSUS.
Story filed by Dennis Bebane

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has called off the holding of the Referendum of 17th December, 2019, citing the lack of a broad, national consensus amongst key stakeholders and the populace.

President Akufo-Addo has, thus, instructed the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama, MP, who is spearheading the process, on behalf of government, to abort the process, and see to the withdrawal of the bills for the amendment of the Constitution, both in respect of article 243(1) and article 55(3).

Addressing the nation on Sunday, 1st December, 2019, the President indicated the attainment of a broad consensus, for him, on a matter as important as the amendment of an entrenched provision of the Constitution, is critical.

“I do not believe that such an amendment should be driven as a party matter. There has to be a clear national consensus and agreement amongst the populace that a particular entrenched provision no longer serves the interest of the people, and, thus, has to be removed,” he said.

He continued, “In this case, it had been long apparent that political parties were, in fact, actively involved in district assembly elections, despite their apparently non-partisan nature. The time had come to strip the process of its hypocrisy, and accept and work with the reality of party involvement.”

Explaining the rationale for his decision, the President stated that that he came into office, nearly three years ago, with the firm conviction, emanating from the campaign and national discussions, that there was a national consensus for two important amendments to the country’s governance system, which would enhance its effectiveness and accountability – the reorganization of the country’s regional governance structure, and the potential involvement of political parties in local governance.

It was in furtherance of this and other matters that, on Tuesday, 18th April, 2017, a little over four (4) months into my mandate, he held a meeting with his three predecessors, their Excellencies Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Dramani Mahama, at Jubilee House, to seek their views and counsel on these issues.

“I came away from that meeting with the view that there was consensus amongst us that the time had come for political parties to participate openly in district assembly elections and local governance,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo noted that, indeed, amongst the leadership of Parliament and amongst Members of Parliament on both sides, and amongst, virtually, all stakeholders who had been consulted either by him, or by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, the clear indications were that there was a broad national consensus for the repeal of article 55(3).

Debunking the notion that elections in Ghana’s 4th Republic have been divisive, the President stated that elections have rather been a unifying factor in the politics of the 4th Republic, the reason why “we have experienced the longest, uninterrupted period of stable, constitutional governance in our history, banishing the spectre of instability that disfigured the early years of our nation’s existence, and the benefits are still showing. It would also mean that freedom of association, which is one of the most fundamental freedoms in any democracy, would be given full expression in Ghanaian democracy.”

NDC U-turn
Regrettably, President Akufo-Addo stated that the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress, made a U-turn, and stated that it was no longer prepared to go along with the national consensus.

“They indicated further that they will actively campaign for a ‘No’ vote. In as much as I still believe that there is enough support in the country for a ‘Yes’ vote to be successful on 17th December, I do not believe that this is the proper atmosphere in which an issue of such nature, i.e. the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution, should be addressed in our country,” he said.

Even after their U-turn, the President revealed that he undertook consultations across a broad range of opinion as to the way forward, with the general result being that the process of repeal should be put on hold, for the time being, to enable a durable, national consensus to be forged on this matter.

“In these circumstances, I am convinced that it will not serve the public interest to go ahead with the holding of the Referendum on 17th December, even though I believe a strong campaign for a ‘Yes’ vote would have succeeded. This is not the kind of atmosphere in which the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution should take place,” he added.

Despite having an unrepentant belief in party politics being good for the country, President Akufo-Addo stated that “I also think that, on matters of such constitutional significance, there should be a broad, national consensus behind the repeal of an entrenched provision of the Constitution”.

The President assured that his Government will continue to work for a broad, national consensus on the issue, adding that “should such a consensus be attained for the repeal of article 55(3) of the Constitution, and an agreement reached for political parties to participate in and sponsor candidates for election to district assemblies, at any point during my tenure of office as President of the Republic, the matter will be brought again back to the front burner of our public discourse for the necessary action”.

We can’t give timelines for distribution of new curriculum textbooks – Education Ministry

Mathew Opoku Prempeh NAPO.
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister.

The Ministry of Education has said it cannot give timelines as to when the textbooks for the new curriculum for basic schools will be available for use by pupils.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment NaCCA this year reviewed the curriculum for basic school education.

According to NaCCA, the move was to modify some subjects and to improve students’ learning needs to ensure relevance.

Speaking to Citi News, Public Relations Officer for the Education Ministry, Vincent Ekow Assafuah said the Ministry is waiting on NaCCA to complete the necessary approvals for the reviewed curriculum which will be submitted to the publishers.

“We are unable to give specific timelines as to when it will be available but what I can assure you is that the necessary approvals will be done by the National Council for Curriculum for Assessment by the end of the 10th [November].”

“The curriculum was brought about to cure mischief in the system. The mischief whereby the world of work is not in consonance with what is taught in the various classrooms. The new curriculum is supposed to cure that mischief. If you bring about the textbook then the textbook should be able to be in consonance with the original idea [and also] with the reviewed curriculum. Most of the work will have to be left for publishers and publishers will have to be entreated that as soon as they get approvals, they should make available the curriculum for the various schools.”

A Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak had called on the government to come out with a specific date as to when basic schools will receive learning materials for the new curriculum which started in September 2019.

According to him, the “Nana Akufo-Addo led NPP Government owes Ghanaians an explanation as to why two months on, there are no books based on the new curriculum.”

Dr. Apaak in a statement backed his demand with a disclaimer issued by NaCCA with regards to the release of the educational materials.

NaCCA had refuted claims that “publishers are selling textbooks and other supplementary learning materials to schools and the general public purported to have been approved by it for the new Standards-Based Curriculum (KG-B6)”.

The legislator further urged Ghanaians to demand accountability from government, saying that “Ghanaians must not accept such gross incompetence and insensitivity, especially when it has to do with the future of our nation, educating the future leaders”.

I’ll be FOOLISH to invest in NPP campaign in 2020-Kennedy Agyapong snarls

It is unclear who may have provoked controversial New Patriotic Party (NPP) firebrand, Kennedy Agyapong but if his recent outburst is anything to go by, then the elephant family must brace itself for an approaching danger.

An audio recording of the lawmaker who was speaking to party supporters at Nyankumasi within his constituency at the weekend intercepted by MyNewsGh.com, reveals he is up in arms with the NPP and has vowed not to contribute a dime towards its 2020 elections because he feels cheated and insulted.
According to him, the party has not been fair to him despite subjecting him the worse form of embarrassment when he appeared before the privileges committee over his commentary on the legislature.
“They feel they are wise but that is all of it. They will take me to Central Region and say the 23 constituencies Kennedy Agyapong the foolish one should use his money to support, I will not do it again. If I do not tell them then I am lying”, he lashed out.
Treading cautiously on his banter with ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas that landed him in trouble, he told the supporters but for the fact he was speaking in public, he would have made certain revelations about the whole matter.

“The party has not treated me fairly at all. When the Anas video came out, if I tell you the truth, you will not believe. We are in public I will restrain myself. They have disgraced me before a crowded parliament. I have had enough…I won’t run again”, he insisted on quitting parliament.
It would be recalled that in June last year shortly after making an appearance before the privileges committee, the loudmouth politician announced the end of the road for him in parliament saying it was upon the advice of his wife.

“My wife told me not to contest again after watching the video. She agrees that indeed what I said was true. I will leave Parliament and become a star. My constituents will see how hard life will be for them when I leave parliament. I will not contest again” he opined on Adom TV’s Badwam program and monitored by MyNewsGh.com

Upper East Region has favourable ground water potential – Survey

The Upper East Region generally has a favourable groundwater potential with a low fluoride content that can serve the people for a long time, a survey carried out in the region has revealed.

Mr John Nedjo, a consultant and leader of the survey team, said the groundwater in parts of the Bongo and Talensi districts showed high levels of fluoride and called for samples of the water to be tested twice in a year to determine its wholesomeness for human consumption.

The survey was carried out from the period of June to July 2019 in the Bongo, Pusiga, Binduri, Nabdam, Talensi and Kasena Nankana districts.

Mr Nedjo made the call at a stakeholders’ forum on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), organised to validate the survey report, conducted by Centre for Development Partnership and Innovations (CDPI) in collaboration with the Ghana Red Cross Society.

He said findings and suggestions of the report would provide indepth information for development partners and future researchers who may wish to dig deeper into WASH situations in the Upper East Region for development and academic purposes.

Mr Paul Wooma, the Upper East Regional Manager of GRCS, said the forum was to afford participants the opportunity to proffer ideas and suggestions to enrich the baseline report and finalize it for adoption and implementation.

Mr Wooma said despite several interventions by government and other key development partners on WASH, its results still needed improvement.

He said in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as stated in SDG 6, it is necessary for the survey document to be put across to aid stakeholders in their bid to provide WASH facilities to the populace.

Mr Wooma expressed optimism that the presentation of the report would help address the numerous WASH challenges confronting the region.

Gov't Terminates Appointment of Acting ECG, Boss

Government has terminated the appointment of the care-taker Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Samuel Boakye-Appiah.

A statement from the Ministry of Energy said the termination follows the expiration of Mr. Boakye-Appiah’s contract term in 2018.

He has been directed to handover his duties to his Deputy, Kwame Agyemang-Budu.

The outgone CEO was appointed in February, 2017 by President Akufo-Addo to act in that capacity until a substantive CEO was approved.

This also comes days after the government officially handed over the country’s electricity distribution business to ECG following the cancellation of the concession agreement with the Power Distribution Service, (PDS).

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo justified the decision saying it was in the interest of the public as it was important to protect the assets of the Electricity Company of Ghana which is worth some $3 billion.

The statement reads:

“It is observed that your contract as Care-Taker Chief Executive Officer of Electricity Company of Ghana expired in 2018.

In this regard, I am directed to request you to take necessary steps to hand over your duties to Mr. Kwame Agyemang-Budu, Deputy Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana with immediate effect.

Please accept the gratitude of H.E the President for the invaluable services you rendered to the nation.

We wish you well
