In a bid to promote local manufacturing and reduce technology import dependence, the Indian government, alongside industry stakeholders, is discussing two critical import standards for laptops and tablets. This initiative follows the recent introduction of an import licensing regime for IT products.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) held a meeting on September 8th to explore these standards' potential impact.
The proposed changes will tie laptop and tablet imports to a company's local manufacturing value and export value of electronic items. Companies will earn credits based on their exports and domestic production, which can offset import costs. This move aims to boost domestic production, exports, and self-reliance in India's tech sector.
