My grand daddy, Charlie Crockett, was born and raised on a farm in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. I remember he passed on his 94th birthday while I was touring in Sweden. All I could think about was the story he told me time and again about being 8 years old seeing Bob Wills at . Aināt nothin but 80 miles from Siloam Springs to Tulsa. The way he said it theyād ride into the big city to get good liquor and listen to the Texas Playboys put Western Swing on the map. Mustāve been around 1933-1934. Seems like we used to play Cainās once a quarter. Iād be lying if I said I havenāt been turnt pretty good talking to Hank Williamsā portrait after they mopped the dance floor and cut off the lights. Iāve talked to all them ghosts in thereā¦ E.T., Cindy Walkerā¦hell, thatās where I found out who she was. From that stage Iāve imagined my grand father way in the back on his step fatherās shoulders watching Tommy Duncan sing. B.B. King played this room plenty. As a kid he was probably my primary influence. I guess he still is. I was lucky that my grandfather lived long enough to get some idea that I was making it in the music business. It got to be that every time I saw him he told me that same story about Bob Wills and how much he got paid to play at Cainās. ā$500!ā Heād say in his booming & thunderous voice. Then heād start into singing āThe Yellow Rose Of Texasā. Canāt wait to get on stage here in a bit. Every body says the ballroomās haunted. I hope he hears me.
