Hey Portuguese learners! 🌍

If you're learning the language, you've probably heard about Brazil's biggest party – Carnaval! 🎭🥳 It's a fun celebration that starts on Friday and goes on until Tuesday, just before Ash Wednesday.

Carnaval is all about samba, a rhythm that mixes African and European styles and shows a little bit of the blend that defines Brazil's culture 🕺💃 The party happens in Sambodramos - an avenue-long stadium where samba schools display colourful costumes that tell stories -and in the streets all over the country!

Would you like to experience the joy of Carnaval in person? Comment and share it with us! 💬

In Macau, Portuguese is one of the official languages alongside Chinese-Cantonese 🤔👀

It might sound weird, considering that the now autonomous region is located on the South Coast of China. The country was one of the first European colonies in East Asia, being under Portugal's rule. Even today, it is possible to find influences of the Portuguese culture in street names, dishes and architecture 😄

Tudo bem, amigos? 🤗

Have you heard the idiom “chutar o balde” - (to kick the bucket)? 🗑

When you “chuta o balde”, you are giving up on something you’ve been working on, or you may be acting on an impulse. For example:

“O trabalho está tão estressante que tenho vontade de chutar o balde” - Work is so stressful that it makes me want to kick the bucket (give up).

Ready to learn more about Mozambique's cuisine? 🙌

The Portuguese-speaking country has as its staple dish Xima (pronounced “shima”). It is a porridge-style food that is made using maize or corn flour. It tastes neutral, but this dish is typically served with flavourful and spicy vegetable or meat stews.

Another delicious dish that is a must-try for all foodies are the Chamussas. This Indian-influenced pastry is triangular and the fillings vary from meat, fish, potatoes and cheese 😋

Olá, pessoal! Tudo bem? 😀

The Portuguese language has many words that can't be translated into English. One word is 'saudade', which stands for melancholic longing or yearning, a sense of loneliness and incompleteness. It can be used to say that you miss someone or something, even if you’ll see that person or thing soon 🤗

'Saudade' can also be felt for something that might never have happened. Interesting, isn't it?

Olá amigos, tudo bem? 🤗

In today's post, we present you with a curiosity of a Portuguese-speaking country... Their national animal is the powerful Crocodile! 🐊

It may seem like an odd choice for a national animal however, it was selected because local legend says that the very island of Timor-Leste itself was formed out of a giant crocodile. In addition to that, the reptile is also considered sacred!

Pretty interesting, right? Let us know in the comments if you know any other national animals of Portuguese-speaking countries! ✍️
