In February, 2022, North Carolina’s Mason Hyce Barnes rode this mega-bomb at Nazaré. In July, 2022 the World Surf League declared it the Biggest Tow Wave of the year. But in an odd departure from previous tradition, no height was given at the time. Was it 70 feet? 80 feet? 90 feet? A new World Record? No comment at the time. But now, almost one year later...still no updates. One way or another, don’t you think Mason deserves to hear something on this topic? Video by Laurent Pujol.

Cotty’s a winner. But this is one he really would’ve been happier not to win, the 2018 XXL Wipeout of the Year at Nazaré shot by Pedro Miranda. It took a lot of rehab to fix up his busted back, but the champ made a full recovery!

It was a rough season overall in the big wave realm except for a three NorPac beast swells during that mid-January burst which made history. If there was still an XXL best overall performance (all genders) award it would have to go to @justinedupont33 (sorry @kai_lenny , you win every other year) who truly slayed the sea monsters at Cortes Bank. There have been a couple of waves making the rounds but she probably had a dozen sick rides, here’s a fresh angle for you to enjoy. Look for a very detailed retelling in Season 3 of @100footwave, although that’s probably gonna be next year or the year after that.
