We'll run Kali Linux ( or any other Linux distribution) with a graphical user environment such as xfce or KDE or mate inside a Docker Container! I'll explain briefly Docker images, Docker containers and Dockerfiles. I provide you with a Dockerfile on my github server that allows you to chose the X11 desktop environment, the remote access client to use (VNC, RDP, x2go), the Kali software packages to install and which network to use (bridged, host).

The Windows Subsystem for Linux or WSL2 allows you to run full Linux distributions under Windows. We will install Kali Linux in wsl2 and have a look at some options. Kex is using TigerVNC and is a nice solution, but there is an easier and more transparent way of using X11 apps in WSL2. In the video we will just launch the xfce4 panel inside WSL2 and show it on the Windows desktop. We will use the Hyper-V console to create a virtual switch and map it to the WSL2 container using the .wslconfig file. I'll explain the X11 integration with Wayland, Weston, WSLG, FreeRDP and MSTSC.

Installing Kali inside a VM is easy - where things become interesting is when we want to chose the right solution and the right network setup for tools such as wireshark or arpspoof. With the virtual network adapters you don't have direct access to the network hardware. We will have a look at network options with Virtualbox, Hyper-V and Proxmox. I have also compiled a little decision matrix that might help you chose the right solution. We will also have a short look at options how we can map hardware (USB, PCI...) to a virtual machine with the three solutions.
