Sampling came about through turntablism in the late 80s. Cutting between clean drum breaks from old funk records to create edits. Then came the first samplers and the dawn of hip hop and other forms of sampled music. It has played a huge roll in the evolution of and uk dance music and is something every producer should master. With proper use of the internet you can pinpoint moments in musical history that will provide you with sampling material that has never been used before. It’s like a never ending treasure hunt for grownups and is definitely one of my favourite processes in music production. Dm for more info on this and the courses i provide..

Sampling plays a huge part in my production process. Digging through old records for to find sounds the suit the concept of the project I’m conceiving. It involves research and sifting through tons of material to compile a ‘toolbox’ of sounds to enter the writing process with.

Do you have an established WORKFLOW? If so let us know about it in comments below. It’s possible you have a few different ones. Personally I think of a concept, sketch and experiment with ways to achieve that concept through sampling, sound design and layering sounds and exploring ideas. Then finally I begin writing once I have a solid plan. This kind of thinking forms the basis of my tuition.

Our tutor George is a classically trained musician and producer with over 20 years experience working in the music industry. He has over 60 commercial releases under the alias Commix including 2 albums on Goldie’s record label Metalheadz and is synonymous with the very best in forward thinking Drum and Bass.
