The Washington Post tried and failed to sit it out. Elon Musk on the other hand is all in. And apparently all in with Putin as reports emerged of the two conducting back channel communications since 2022. And all in for Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden that felt a whole lot too close for comfort to the historic pre-WWII N**i rally at the same venue. Although, we’re pretty sure that one had fewer racist jokes.

🎙🚨This week, as the election draws closer, we’re narrowing the focus on national security. And we’ve got the perfect guest to discuss the topics that keep the watchers up at night and the area that is most likely to produce an October surprise. Tom Bowman is the legendary NPR National Desk reporter who covers the Pentagon along with co-hosting NPR's Taking Cover podcast and his latest podcast, “A Good Guy” from NPR’s Embedded.

In his current role, Bowman has traveled to Syria as well as Iraq and Afghanistan often for month-long visits and embedded with U.S. Marines and soldiers.

Before coming to NPR in April 2006, Bowman spent nine years as a Pentagon reporter at The Baltimore Sun. Altogether he was at The Sun for nearly two decades, covering the Maryland Statehouse, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the National Security Agency (NSA). His coverage of racial and gender discrimination at NSA led to a Pentagon investigation in 1994.

Initially Bowman imagined his career path would take him into academia as a history, government, or journalism professor. During college Bowman worked as a stringer at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass. He also worked for the Daily Transcript in Dedham, Mass., and then as a reporter at States News Service, writing for the Miami Herald and the Anniston (Ala.) Star.

Bowman is a co-winner of a 2006 National Headliners' Award for stories on the lack of advanced tourniquets for U.S. troops in Iraq. In 2010, he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of a Taliban roadside bomb attack on an Army unit. In 2024, Bowman was also awarded a Murrow Award for Best Investigative Reporting for the Taking Cover podcast. Bowman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont, and a master's degree in American Studies from Boston College.

🎙🚨This year, as we pay respect to the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, your host and 9/11 First Responder, Paul Rieckhoff has a lot to teach us all. About what happened on that day. About what it means. 🎙🚨Labor Day weekend was nice–if you got to get away or enjoy it. The weather was lovely in most parts of the country. But summer is now over. School is back in session. The craziest election season of our lifetime is upon us. And damn, summer already seems far away.

Trump and Harris are bombing away at full throttle now. And fighting for the coveted “swing voters” in swing states. But who are these powerful and mysterious voters? What do these mostly independent Americans really care about most? Why do we have to keep talking about Robert F Kennedy Jr? Why is Trump’s Arlington controversy still in the news? What did Senator John McCain’s son have to say? Can we please go back to summer?!?!

And meanwhile, war continues to rage around the world. Including involving US troops in…Iraq?!?! While Israel recovered six hostages brutally murdered by Hammas, Ukrainian civilians continue to be bombed and rocketed by Putin. The world is on fire and our broken political system is only making it worse.

🎙🚨Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff has been to both conventions for the last twenty years. And for a political nerd and activist like him, they’re always fascinating, sometimes fun, occasionally frightening, frequently historic, and often frustrating. 🎙🚨Democrats are feeling hopeful right now. And hope is contagious. Americans love hope. We saw that in massive ways in and around the Olympics. We see it at the start of the new school year. The beginning of the new football season. Fall is actually a time of hope. And the hope is contagious right now. But hope is not a course of action. Hope is not a plan. But it is cool. And a lot cooler than weird.

Meanwhile, the war between the warrior candidates over their time in uniform continues. This week, with Walz defending himself from the Swift Boat 2.0 attack from Trump, Vance and the MAGA right. As Harris surges, Trump’s desperation is increasing, and the race continues to heat up.

🎙🚨Last week we said we were going to take off this week to get some much needed R&R. 2024 was having none of it. In the span of the last week we’ve had a month's worth of news, crises and developments. From Trump’s abysmal performance at the NABJ conference to a story so bizarre you have to hear it straight from the source to believe it, the news won’t quit. So we won’t either. And oh yeah, by the way, Harris named her VP pick.

Tim Walz is a leader of integrity, honor, humility and fight. He’s a friend of host Paul Rieckhoff and he’s a patriotic, down to earth and lovable bulldog. He knows how to fight against (but also alongside) Republicans. He understands that making real and lasting change in Washington requires bipartisanship. Especially now.

It’s a big bold pick that won’t make everyone happy. But it guarantees that there will be a veteran as VP in the next administration. Veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan are starting to shape the political landscape, just like the generations of veterans that came before them. We’ll always celebrate that.
