This album - and their subsequent albums - changed me forever.

The world DCD created I can only describe as a sort of Narnia; A secret world of magic you felt - or at least I felt as a teenager living in the suburbs - you had secret access to.

I knew they had other fans out there, but I wouldn’t see any in the flesh for a decade or more until they finally came to play the O’Keefe Centre in Toronto which also was a divine experience.

Radiohead

Gonna go straight to the rabbit hole for Radiohead. Enough has been written and said. No need to add to it.

I’ve even questioned the need for a rabbit hole in a time when you can just Google a band or go to youthful.

But not everyone has the time. And more established bands have an enormous amount of content. I think the need for curation is still valid.

Case in point, we’re big Radiohead fans and had never heard this song.

So here you go. An unreleased song. Hopefully it ends up on their next record.

Years ago I stumbled across Sharon Van Etten’s MySpace page where she had only 2 songs and was immediately captivated. I’m relieved she didn’t fade into obscurity like so many other great MySpace artists I discovered back then.

She continues to captivate with this new tune co-written by courtney barnett

I look forward to rabbit holing her music when I get a chance. Right now this page (and eventually, website) is just run by me as a passion project which I haven’t told a single soul about. Not even close family and friends.

If someone stumbled across this page, feel free to rabbit hole in the comments. That would help me and the hopefully, eventually, the artists that deserve attention. By that I mean, post in the comment any deep cuts, rarities, tidbits of little known info etc. I’ll eventually add it to the website.

Arcade Fire wouldn’t exist without The Dears.

We’re not going to comment on the rest of this somewhat bizarre list. We just wanted to add that The Dears deserve more credit than they get.

Or course Arcade Fire took the orchestral indie… whatever you call it genre and did great things. But The Dears kicked it off and No Cities Left is a masterpiece and national treasure.

From Bon Iver to J Dilla to Beyoncé, these are the musicians who made the biggest impact across Pitchfork’s lifetime so far.

Happy Birthday Trish.

Since Trish's untimely passing in 2011, James has continued to remember her by sharing unreleased Broadcast demos each year on her birthday, September 28th.

In the spirit of those birthday demos Broadcast present “Spell Blanket - Collected Demos 2006-2009"

The collection comprises songs and sketches drawn from Trish's extensive archive of 4-track tapes and minidiscs. The recordings lay the groundwork for what would have been Broadcast’s fifth album, offering an intimate window into the creative process of Trish and James during this period post Tender buttons.

'Spell Blanket - Collected Demos 2006-2009' will be released via Warp Records in early 2024.

Anyone catch The Walkmen on their recent tour. The Wedge was there (as a fan). Incredible.

Hamilton vocal performance is one of the best I’ve seen and I’ve seen many great shows. His stage banter was poignant and often funny.

Their drummer continues to be underrated.

We give the show an enthusiastic 10/10.

We caught them at History in Toronto.

This Baxter Dury tune is so fu***ng good, every time we go to grab the link from the vid, we just end up watching it 3 times and going down the rabbit hole.

Easily our fave video of the 20’s. In a decade that’s been a bit disappointing in terms of releases, this is the song we need - nay - the song we deserve!

I won’t even write it up or talk about his dad. Just fu***ng dive in. If there was any justice in the world this song would be #1. Not that we care about charts. Does anyone even care what’s hot in the Billboard charts anymore? Honest question.

The original Wedge TV intro. So 90’s and clearly inspired by beloved 4AD graphic designer Vaughn Oliver (who passed away in 2019).

Note: This will be the last post rehashing The Wedge’s past. This page - and eventually - channel and website, is a love letter to underground music and counter culture, free of any obligation to be profitable.

While we will cover music and culture that spans many decades. It’s not a retro 90’s page. But feel free to add to the rabbit hole below.

I suppose this is a fitting place to start; Released in August 1990, charting at number 1 for several weeks, and the first piece of music in the original Wedge intro. It’s also fitting because Janes Addiction was one of a handful of bands that helped usher in 90’s alternative music.

Jane's Addiction remain a one of a kind band and to this day the music world hasn’t seen another frontman quite like Perry Ferrel.
..

Now, a bit about this page:

It’s not about looking back at the glory days of music television. At least not entirely. It’s about reviving music and music journalism in 2021.

Most music stations end up becoming reality TV trash, and music blogs inevitably sell out to the highest bidder when they become successful.

That’s not going to happen to us. The Wedge was cancelled. But it didn’t have to be. It just needed to evolve.

So it wasn’t profitable. Fine. But you can now run a TV channel with a Gopro and a YouTube account. And of course at least one person that actually cares about music, and culture.

The network - who’s name I won’t utter - that was originally home to The Wedge recently started up again. I’m not sure what it is as the content is... confusing to the say the least.

Do we really need to go on Tik Tok to listen to Justin Beiber? If you want pop. Go on Spotify. Go anywhere because it’s everywhere.

What we do need are curators. There are millions of songs on Spotify that don’t have a single play. Someone needs to mine that mess for gold. That’s what this is. In part. It’s not about trying to make underground artists into stars. It’s about celebrating the most important music over the past 70 years. There is more of it than you can listen to in a lifetime. Someone also needs to mine that as well.

Lastly, a promise: if some rich, clueless executive ever tries to take over this channel, I’m burning it down.
