The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says Nigeria’s banking sector has contributed immensely to the development of the country and indeed the continent.

Okonjo-Iweala spoke virtually on Saturday at the 2021 Fellowship Investiture programme of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria held in Lagos.

The former Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, on Saturday described the invasion of the Abuja residence of a Supreme Court judge, Justice Mary Odili, as a cruel, undemocratic and uncivilized act.
Some security agents had on Friday evening invaded the judge’s residence in the Maitama area of Abuja with a search warrant over alleged illegal activities in the building.
However, in a statement, Kalu called for a full-blown investigation of the raid.
He said the action is capable of causing tension in the country, pointing out that a better approach would have been adopted for the operation.
The Senate Chief Whip noted that the security agents’ invasion of the judge’s residence was at variance with democratic tenets and an infringement on her rights.

A mass communication student of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, identified simply as Chidinma, has reportedly stabbed her boyfriend, Daniel Johnson, over WhatsApp chats with another female friend.
It was gathered that the victim was stabbed by the lady on Wednesday, October 27. He however survived the attack.
Narrating his ordeal to journalists after his recuperation, the victim stated that his girlfriend went through his WhatsApp messages while he was asleep before stabbing him with a knife.

A former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu has formally emerged as the new national chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the party’s national convention held in Abuja.
Ayu who was unveiled in the early hours of Sunday will now succeed the embattled Uche Secondus who was suspended but has been battling to retain his position, leading him to drag the party before the court in an attempt to stop the national convention.
Speaking at the event, Ayu, said that the party is back to take over back power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Bayelsa State Police command has confirmed the killing of a suspected kidnapper in Igbedi/Amassoma Road, Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.
DAILY POST gathered that the incident occured on Saturday when a large number of suspected kidnappers stormed a construction site in the area, targeting the expatriates for abduction.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat stated that security operatives engaged the unspecified number of suspected kidnappers and gunned one of them down.

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, who disclosed this at the 15th Oil Trading and Logistics (OTL) Africa Downstream Week, said Nigeria’s petroleum product demand would grow to 17.3 million metric tons by 2025, up from the 15.1 million MT in 2020. PDP Convention: We’ve a chance to set reset Nigeria – Atiku - https://ournaijanews.com/pdp-convention-weve-a-chance-to-set-reset-nigeria-atiku/ - Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar Saturday in Abuja charged all Nigerians to take the opportunity presented by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to set Nigeria aright.
Mr Abubakar gave the charge while addressing delegates and party officials at the 2021 PDP National Convention.
According to him, there are many differences, but Nigerians can achieve anything if they put their differences aside.
He said that the convention was an opportunity to make decisions that would shape the future of the party for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Mr Abubakar said Nigeria was passing through the most difficult period of its existence, adding that he is 70 years plus and had never seen the country in such a shape.

Secondus condemns invasion of Mary Odili’s home - https://ournaijanews.com/secondus-condemns-invasion-of-mary-odilis-home/ - The suspended National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has described the ‘invasion’ of the home of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odilli, as a huge embarrassment.
Mr Secondus, who made this known in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, also said the incident is an insult on the judiciary.
Media reports on Friday indicated that Mrs Odili’s Maitama, Abuja residence, was raided by armed operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC has, however, said its officials did not carry out the raid. Another security agency, SSS, also denied carrying out the raid.
Mrs Odili is the wife of Peter Odili, a former governor of Rivers State, who has been having a running battle with the anti-graft agency.

Umezurike wins Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism 2021 - https://ournaijanews.com/umezurike-wins-nigeria-prize-for-literary-criticism-2021/ -

Umezurike got the award for his critical essays – “Self-Publishing in the era of military rule in Nigeria, 1985 – 1999,” “Postcolonial Ogres in Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s Wizard of the Crow,” and “Land of cemetery: funereal images in the poetry of Musa Idris Okpanachi.”
This was announced by a member of The Nigeria Prize for Literature Advisory Board, Prof. Olu Obafemi.
The Nigeria Prize for Literature has since 2004 rewarded eminent writers in all the literary categories that the Prize rotates yearly; Poetry, Prose, drama and Children’s literature.
The prize runs concurrently with the Nigeria Prize for Literary Criticism which is also sponsored by NLNG for which four entries were received in 2020.
The literary criticism prize carries a monetary value of N1 million.

JUST IN: NLNG announces winner of $100,000 Literature Prize - https://ournaijanews.com/just-in-nlng-announces-winner-of-100000-literature-prize/ - Author Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia has been announced as the winner of the $100,000 NLNG Literature Prize for 2021.
Ms Onyemelukwe-Onuobia’s novel, The Son of the House, was announced the winner at a ceremony Saturday night.
Earlier in July, PREMIUM TIMES reported that the NLNG had shortlisted 11 authors, including Ms Onyemelukwe-Onuobia, for this year’s edition of the prize.

The Advisory Board for The Nigeria Prize for Literature has announced the shortlist of 11 drawn from 202 books in the running for the 2021 edition of the prize.
