July 2024, Blaque/OUT Magazine celebrates the Brown! We are all family, sourced from the African diaspora that spread our culture & traditions throughout the world. Wherever we landed, no matter what oppression awaited us, we grew, bloomed & made roots. We honor the Brown Trans women who powered the fight for Q***r & Trans liberation over decades. We celebrate the 74th Birthday of the Queen, Sylvia Rivera who founded S.T.A.R. with Marsha P. Johnson to give Trans women & Q***r youth of NYC a home.

Most of us have seen the footage of Sylvia fighting her way onto a Pride stage amidst boo’s armed with a mic stand, to speak of a movement SHE was integral in creating. I think most Black & Brown Q***r activists have felt some fraction of that anger, shame, dismissal & denial in our work. It makes you want to give up- but you don’t, because you can’t. She left the city for a while & returned when Marsha’s
body was found in the Hudson. She spent most of the rest of her life, unhoused, living on the piers fighting major LGBTQ orgs, getting kicked out of buildings and board rooms for demanding they shelter Q***r homeless youth.

On her deathbed in February of 2002, she negotiated with Empire State Pride Agenda to include Trans Rights in their platform. She died penniless, but she died FIGHTING for us all.
Thank You Sylvia, Thank you for being the fight in us all.

In this issue, we throwback to some incredible interviews with icons like Chanel Lopez and introduce you to emerging leaders like Liz De La Cruz (DJ Sin), the founder of Latin Le****ns of Florida. We of course have all the Blaque/OUT writers & columnists you know & love. Plus an EXCLUSIVE Book Therapy interview with Black, Q***r author, Terry J. Benton-Walker.

Don't Miss A Minute!!

P.S. Congrats to the Rockstar leadership of the Pride & LGBTQ orgs around the world that worked to the point of exhaustion to make Pride season happen all June on top of what you do all year around. ESPECIALLY the Black, Brown Q***r & Trans leadership who have to fight our own communities (boffum) for Intersectionality, Inclusion & Visibility. You did that! N&*&a we made it!

Please SHARE to help get Taylor Casey's face on everyone's timeline & locked in their memories. You never know when you may be the one that gets her home.

(June 29, 2024) - First alerted to this story by a friend to Blaque/OUT Magazine, Anna DeShawn, nearly a week ago. We have been patiently waiting for good news before bringing it to our audience. As the story looms on, we wanted to share what we know and what we've read in hopes it may somehow help to bring Taylor home.

Taylor Casey, 41, was attending the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. She has not been seen since the evening of June 19th. Family and the American embassy there were notified of her failure to come to class on the morning of June 20th. It has been reported that her cellphone was located in the water in the area unaccompanied. Bahamian police are said to have search the retreat and would be expanding their search to the rest of their island. However, when a reporter from News Nation reported live from the island and resort, there didn't appear to be anyone searching, nor did he find any missing flyers or other guests of the resort that were aware of her disappearance. Family is traveling to the island to assist with the search efforts.

It is important to note that areas that rely heavily on tourism are often very hesitant to widely report on crime or missing people because it can affect travel. The area where Taylor was visiting is in a heavy tourism area near to Nassau, close to Atlantis and Margaritaville resorts. According to the US embassy, the Bahamas are currently on a Level 2 Travel Advisory, asking guests to exercise increased caution due to, "gang-on-gang violence [having] resulted in a high homicide rate primarily affecting the local population. Violent crime, such as burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults, occur in both tourist and non-tourist areas. Be vigilant when staying at short-term vacation rental properties where private security companies do not have a presence."

It is also no secret to our community that Black and Indigenous women go missing at alarmingly high rates with little to no media coverage. While the news is often flooded by the disappearances of some, the disappearances of Black and Indigenous women often go completely unreported losing precious time that could have sometimes saved their lives. Recently Representatives Ilhan Omar and Betty McCollum penned a letter to President Biden asking him to address these disparities (https://omar.house.gov/sites/evo-subsites/omar.house.gov/files/evo-media-document/Omar-McCollum%20Letter%20Calling%20for%20an%20Office%20for%20Missing%20and%20Murdered%20Black%20Women%20&%20Girls.pdf).

Until then, YOU, we may be the key to bringing Taylor Casey home. If you know, see or have heard information that may be helpful to the case, please call: 242-300-8476, you can make your report anonymously.
