African Architecture, Culture & Roots

We speak of modernizing as if it was synonymous with westernizing.

We have internalizing western culture as our own as we slowly forget our roots. From clothes to architecture we are so infatuated with European culture so much so that we justify that we are civilized due to the fact that we have western things such as their languages, brands and education systems.

We are so lost and so far gone, and maybe this is because we have internalized this self hatred after colonialism occurred and so I beg the question: why do we wish to mimic our oppressors? Why do we wish to mimic our colonizers when we fought so hard to rid ourselves of their control, and it’s quite funny at that.

We are left with mental scars from our past. We are emotionally damaged and bruised and hurt and we seek our oppressor validation as they feed us lies about how lack being civilized when we were the BIRTH of civilization.

We forget our roots and read their stories instead of our own, we bash each-other and hurt each other and hold those who hurt us with no remorse to a higher standard than our neighboring countries, our people.

We always wish for a better future, and when we do we imagine it to be countries that look like western countries. We have no pride in our roots and ancestry and we disrespect ourselves because we cannot accept ourselves for who we are.

Learn about YOUR roots. Take pride in YOUR culture and ancestry. Modernize YOUR culture not westernize, there is a huge difference between the two.

You owe it to yourself to find your truth.

Seydou Keita, born in Bamako, Mali was a Malian photographer in the 1950’s, he is thought to be one of the greatest creators of African photography.

Keita was famous for his portraits and depictions of the community in Mali. He opened up his first studio in 1928 which was one of the most famous ones in his city.

Keita’s works are perceived as some of the greatest pieces of African photography, and they are also perceived as great art.
