Cincinnati lost a bit of art this year. "Circumspect", designed by Stuart Fink, was a concrete sculpture created in 1984 for the outside area of the Cincinnati Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency. Today it is now construction for the ever changing landscape of city, but have a look at the piece from unique perspective in 2022.

My very first job was working at a butcher shop at the age of 13.
I was paid $2.50 an hour to clean pans, saw blades bigger than myself, and the freezer floor (brrrrr), so I leapt at the chance to do an ad for a local butcher shop!

Here is one of my ads for Langen Meats in Batesville, Indiana that I completed last year.

"MRAP Graffiti Taunting the Taliban"
Helmand Province Afghanistan, 2011

Combat graffiti is as old as war, with archeologist finding carvings of humorous soldier's jokes dating as far back as the Roman Empire. Even in WW2 the allies had Kilroy, the ever present scribble that showed other units that US infantry had cleared the area.

This taunt was scribbled on the back of our MRAP after a Taliban round hit nowhere near our turret gunner. The joke is using Marine Corps rifle qualification lingo to make fun of their poor aim (no spell check in war 😂).

On this foot patrol in early winter, we handed out radios to the local villages so they could connect with each other and receive news, weather, and other typical broadcasts in the country for a sense of belonging.

Rural Afghanistan's idea of community was rooted more in tribes or villages, so the notion of being part of a country or being represented in government was so foreign to them that simple lines of communication like shortwave radios helped promote connection.

Counter insurgency operations would often include foot patrols like this, where the mission of handing out radios, food, fuel, etc was a real necessity but always secondary to the main mission of gathering intel on Taliban activity in the area.

"Down Time at Patrol Base Boldak"
October 28th, 2010, Helmand Province Afghanistan.

Our company patrol rotation was split between one week of heavy mobilized infantry patrols, that would have us out days or longer at times, followed by a week filled with foot patrols, standing post at the patrol base towers, or the ever crushing boredom of PB life.

This cycle would repeat creating a lot of instances like the ones pictured here where Marines would convene in the shade of the bunkers to play cards, read outdated magazines, or smoke ci******es and joke around. Essentially this is the break room of a combat zone 😆
