On this day in 1209, the massacre at Béziers, which was the first military attack during the Albigensian Crusade. According to Peter of Vaux-de-Cernay, up to 7000 people (of the 10,000 to 14,500 people in the town) were killed after the townspeople refused to hand over 222 Cathars for ex*****on. This is considered to be an exaggeration, but it was written by a man who was alive at the time and would have heard directly about the massacre.
After the townspeople refused to hand over the Cathars, the crusaders attacked the city. Many people sought sanctuary in the church of Saint Mary Magdalene. The crusaders were worried about Cathars possibly lying to them and claiming to be Catholic to save their own lives. The Abbot of Citeaux, Arnaud Amalric, was leading the crusaders and, according to Caesarius of Heisterbach writing 20 years later, told them "Kill them all for the Lord knoweth them that are His."

Here is my rambling about the sinking of the battleship Bismarck in 1941. It was the largest battleship at the time, the largest ship ever built in/by Germany, and still one of the largest ships ever built by a European power. And it didn't even survive its first time out of German waters.
Also, Moe honks at me a couple times cause I tried to hold him and wasn't giving him my food!

St. Augustine has the narrowest street in the US!! It was built this way to stop you heathens from stealing from the treasury. But the next time you are riding around in your horse-drawn carriage and see two men carrying a chest of gold, you should still try...just in case.

Hey Barcrawlers! Katie here! I want to say thank you to alla y'all for being so supportive this semester and not giving me too hard a time for not getting episodes out. I still have some work to do this semester, but most of it is smooth sailing.
I finished my long paper about the historiography of masculinity and mental trauma among British soldiers in WWI. If you really want to read all that insanity, I will share it, but if not, no worries. I am quite proud of the fact that I included a footnote that referenced Disney's Mulan. I mean, come on....if you are going to write about the definition of masculinity, we all know that a man is someone who can be as swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, and all the strength of a raging fire, but still as mysterious as the dark side of the moon.
Love y'all and I hope that we will be able to start getting episodes out again soon!

Hey Barcrawlers! We had hoped to do more spooky episodes this month, but I've just got so much crazy going on. So, here you go, just for Halloween! It is the story about Lake Lanier in Georgia! A spooky and haunted lake where hundreds of people have died and there are lots of ghost stories, as well as a horribly racist past...cause this is America!Anyway, have a great Halloween! Stay Safe! Love you!
