Did you know that us Brits are the biggest tippers in Europe?

But with landfills reaching capacity and pressure form both parliament and the public, the drive to find alternatives is changing the way waste is managed with more and more incentive to recycle and reuse.

Green Britain TV travel to Yorkshire waste management firm MYGroup to go behind the scenes at one of their recycling plants where hard-to-recycle waste finds a second life. The plastic and textiles are transformed into multipurpose boards, furniture and much more. Emily meets the team before being tasked with creating a colourful design for one of their boards. The family owned company is also running a fantastic community programme in local schools called SchoolCycled teaching the younger generations the importance and benefits of recycling.

Window-panes are starting to become less of a pain on the planet!

We traveled to Doncaster where we met the McLaren Group team who have partnered with Saint-Gobain to deliver closed-loop recycling of window glass. We went behind the scenes where we saw the mountains of recycled glass, get crushed and turned into cullet. This cullet is then transformed into recycled window glass that is used in building construction projects across the UK.

So excited to see an article written by one of our co-founders, Emily Malkin, up on the My Green Pod website: https://www.mygreenpod.com/articles/discovering-green-britain/. Give it a read if you're interested in the Green Britain TV backstory and some behind-the-scenes glimpses.

The article was written to be featured in the International Women's Day edition of their magazine, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress". It's full of amazing stories of wonderful women doing all sorts of things to progress not only green goals but human rights as well! An incredible friend of Green Britain TV, Scilla Elworthy, is featured on page 6 explaining why women are so critical to the peacemaking process. I really urge you to have a flick through: https://www.mygreenpod.com/magazine/my-green-pod-magazine-march-2024/

Thank you to Jarvis Smith and Katie Hill for publishing this article and for your commitment to supporting sustainable businesses, sharing environmental news and promoting sustainable innovations!

8th March marks International Women’s Day, and this year’s theme is: ‘Invest in women:Accelerate progress’.

Summer is coming, we can feel it!

Last summer we found ourselves in the UK surfing capital, Cornwall, where we meet with peter clemo, founder of sustainable surf board company Predn Surf Co. Surf boards, although not the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of unsustainable products, are actually made with a lot of petrochemical heavy materials and, what I didn't realise, is the industry is incredibly "throw away" inclined. Predn, although they haven't gone fully down the bio-material route as not to compromise performance, have replaced petrochemical products with their more eco-alternatives and are making boards that will last more than a lifetime, so no need to replace them! We delve into the impact that traditional surf boards are having on the environment and the challenges they face sourcing material whilst visiting his workshop to see where these beautifully designed sustainable boards are built.

What on Earth is an Earthship?

Well essentially it’s an off-grid building (meaning it has self-sustaining sources of power and water) made from recycled and natural materials. But the name really intrigued us, so Emily and the team went down to Stanmore near Brighton where the central base community Earthship stands, to participate in a self-building course to learn all the skills and knowledge necessary to construct one. Once there, she met Mischa, the director at Low Carbon Trust. The organisation advocates and facilitates the building of Earthships. Mischa gave us a fascinating tour of this building which is built into the side of a hill to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Emily then got her hands well and truly dirty making a glass bottle and tyre walls with Jon, their natural building artist, which creates incredibly beautiful and sustainable results.

Ready for one of Scotland’s best-kelpt secrets? 🌊

As well as being known for its seafood delicacies, the Scottish town of Oban is also a hub for the UK seaweed industry. We were invited to sea behind the scenes at SAMS, The Scottish Association for Marine Sciences and to interview their wonderful team, Kati Michalek, Ryan Marchington and Rhianna Rees. We discuss everything, from growing baby seaweeds in their nursery to deploying and growing sustainable seaweed, the Seaweed Academy and its applications to replace everyday less-sustainable items. Check out this awesome story if you want to know more about how seaweed is part of the future in so many industries! Thank you to the The Scottish Association for Marine Science team and Euan Paterson for hosting us!

New story alert that some of you may recognise! I have seen so many people with these cups around London, so this company must be doing something right! đŸ„€

CircularCup.ca, make reusable cups out of 50% waste material, much of which is collected on the beaches or Cornwall, the base of their HQ and manufacturing.

We met with the lovely Dan Dicker and Ashleigh Smith who explained to us how to make “waste” valuable again, a fundamental part of the circular economy and how quickly you can make carbon savings if you switch to a reusable! Spoiler, 2 uses! đŸ˜± Thanks to the Circular & Co. team for accommodating us and making us city folk jealous of how nice your work environment is! đŸ–ïž 🌊

Wanna see Green Britain TV going “Top Gear"? We’ve met Justin and Kylee at Everrati, a high-end car company that refurbishes and electrifies classics. They are saving vintage cars from being scrapped because they don’t fit the electric standards of the future, by upcycling them into new electric vehicles.

Everrati provides a luxury product, so unfortunately this is still not an affordable option for most of us. However, through this kind of retrofitting all of those materials are saved from going to waste, and theoretically, not as many new materials will need to be produced to see the demand of making a whole new electric vehicle.

This was a super fun shoot for us (who doesn’t want to rag around an Airfield in classic cars). Thank you to the Everrati team for showing us behind the scenes of your workshop!
