When came into the rehearsal room, Iommi showed him riffs he had worked on with Ozzy but that never went anywhere. In no time, helped shape them into the song “Children of the Sea.” In addition to being an experienced vocalist, Dio was also a strong songwriter and played trumpet, guitar, bass and piano so he had a good understanding of music composition. One of his greatest skills, says Iommi, was his ability to take a riff and build a melody around it that didn’t rely on the root notes of the guitar part.

When Black Sabbath fired Ozzy Osbourne for being too drunk to sing, write, record, or show up for practice, it was Sharon Osbourne who called up Tony Iommi to suggest he give Ronnie James Dio a shot.

Coming this Thursday, 7/22, an exclusive episode dedicated to arguably the greatest vocalist in metal history, Ronnie James Dio🤘🔥

One of the most memorable acts of early rock mayhem involved Alice Cooper at the Toronto Rock N’ Roll Festival in 1969, when someone threw a live chicken onstage during the show. There’s circumstantial evidence to suggest it was Alice’s manager Shep Gordon, though Alice can’t confirm. In any case, he picked up the bird and tossed it into to the crowd. It was an innocent move, but one that didn’t work out so well for the chicken, leading to stories about how Alice ripped the chicken to bits then flung the pieces at fans. Here’s Alice speaking to Jon Wiederhorn on this week's Backstaged: The Devil in Metal to set the record straight...

In 2018, the late Quiet Riot drummer, Frankie Banali told Jon Wiederhorn about one of his favorite pranks he pulled on W.A.S.P. frontman, Blackie Lawless. One of Lawless’ trademark stage moves was to drink fake blood out of a fake skull.

As Banali recalled, "This one night I decided to exchange the fake blood with hot sauce. I have never seen demon eyes quite like that in my entire life."

It's absurd to claim hard rock and metal bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest trademarked tour mayhem. The Who's Keith Moon started trashing hotel rooms, lighting fires, and throwing furniture out the window back in 1966. In an interview with Jon Wiederhorn, Alice Cooper insisted Moon's bandmates caused the most mayhem ⬇️ 🤘🔥

Tomorrow on an all new episode of Backstaged: The Devil in Metal with Jon Wiederhorn ...

When Alice Cooper formed The Alice Cooper Band, he knew he had to compete with popular ‘60s bands with major chart singles, like , and So, Alice drew from his love for movies to create a theatrical spectacle that was part rock concert, part Broadway and part horror show. .

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett thinks of horror as a celebration of a darkness before the light. Or an exciting nightmare we’re happy to experience before we wake without a scratch.

06/07/2021

Metal and horror go hand in hand - their fans are consumed with and meticulous about the genres they love, and are often left to defend their passion. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister would be the first to tell you that.

On June 15, 2021, Exodus songwriter and former Slayer guitarist Gary Holt announced he'd started his path to sobriety after more than 40 years of heavy drinking.

Some musicians drink to push the boundaries of excess, while others do it to numb physical or psychological pain.

As a young musician, Cradle of Filth frontman, Dani Filth, was captivated by the allure of partying like a rock star, and in the mid- ‘90s he spent years emulating other metal bands he admired, like Metallica.

In addition to making great music, Pantera brothers Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell liked to make new drinks. Some were vile, like whisky, beer, chocolate sauce and a few cigarette butts, but one has stood the test of time - the Black Tooth Grin.

Here’s Vinnie Paul talking about their 1992 tour with Megadeth where the drink was invented.

In his drinking days, Ozzy Osbourne was the definition of excess, and there were many signs along the way that he had a serious problem and was liable to get completely out of control.

As he told Backstaged: The Devil in Metal host, Jon Wiederhorn during an interview, "When you drink that’s when you become Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Like many musicians who struggle with alcoholism, the late Eddie Van Halen feared he wouldn’t be able to write if he stopped drinking. And Van Halen was an introverted musical genius, not a natural showman. And in order to get onstage and perform night after night for much of his career, he needed to drink.

Two now deceased icons of metal -- Pantera’s guitarist Dimebag Darrell and his brother drummer Vinnie Paul were happy drunks. They could be destructive, but their excitement for what they did and what they loved gushed into who they were. As Vinnie recalled in an interview with Jon Wiederhorn years ago...

"We would have a couple drinks and then we’d go to the show, deliver the goods and then when the show was over we always had the biggest meet and greets, probably the most liquor anybody’s had a rider in who knows how long. And we would just have people back and they would just party with us. Man, and it would be a great time for them and a good time for us and then off we’d go to the next city and do it all over again."

RIP Vinnie Paul 🤘🔥
