Don't get me wrong, hard work matters. But it has to be hard work that is surgically directed in the right way and at the right things.

I'm sorry, but you're not going to get rich by working hard at the post office for 40 years. You don't get rich renting out your time that way.

Getting rich is all about equity, which is the opposite of a salary-based, time-dependent type of earning.

Equity is independent of time. It also gives you leverage. Leverage is the exertion of minimum effort to achieve maximum results.

The difference between a startup and a restaurant or barbershop is multiplication vs arithmetic.

You fry eggs or cut hair one customer at a time. But when you solve a technical problem a lot of people are having, you help everyone who uses your solution. That's leverage.

To get rich, you need to be in a position where two factors exist: Measurement and Leverage. Put yourself out there where your performance can be measured.

Absent measurement, there is no way to get paid more for doing more. Leverage is having a big bag full of options to make the best decisions that will give you maximum returns.

Actors, CEOs, and people in sales are all examples of jobs with both measurement and leverage.

A good way to know if your job has leverage is the impact if you fail. IN a fixed salary position, if you screw up a project, you may get fired, ut often you get a do-over.

But if a salesperson misses sales projections for that week or month, their commission takes a hit. Ditto CEOs whose bonuses are tied to company performance, or actors whose movie bombs at the box office.

When you work for yourself, you are exposed, vulnerable. Your customers either buy, or they don’t. And if they don’t, it's your fault.

To solve that hard problem you have to move fast. Successful startups work by compressing time. How much time? 3 or 4 years of focused, deep work, without any corporate bu****it to slow you down.

Compressing time is not a shortcut to wealth creation nor is it going to be easy. The law of conversation is in full effect: to make a million, you have to endure a million dollar's worth of pain, but only for three or four years.

To make a million by working your regular job, you'll have to save every penny and endure the stress of working for somebody for forty years or more.

Long-term pain is for masochists.
