When we speak of the Master Navigators of Te Moana Nui a Kiwa (Pasefika), remember that going out into the Moana (Pacific Ocean/Worlds largest ocean), is equivalent to modern day astronauts going into SPACE. The knowledge, equipment and skill needed to navigate their way to and from the many motu (islands) required great skill. It’s about 2600 miles from Hawaii to Tahiti. From Tahiti to Aoteroa, another 2700 miles. It’s amazing that for Tangata whenua, it was just a highway for us to get from one Pacific island to the next. Furthermore, can you imagine the preparations needed to take on a journey like this? Poor planning could result in death.

Many say that we were not “intelligent” enough to complete such a daunting task. They were WRONG. We were NOT just paddling our canoes. We knew how to use wind energy with our sails. We understood how to survive while living in the deep blue sea. We navigated the stars like no other. We needed no compass. We had a clear understanding of the world around us. We were aware of our surrondings and understood that if we went past the horizon, we wouldn’t fall off the face of the earth, as palagi people original thought.

There is much to say about Tagata mao’i (true people of Pasefika). It’s no wonder why Pasefika language and culture is so similar to each other. We are ONE people! We are the family of Navigators. We were not the savages that Europeans made us out to be. We were sound in culture, surroundings, knowledgeable and skillful to remain sustainable on and off land. Give it up for your first astronauts ’i/Maohi/Maori/Maoli 🌎

Excusing the mispronunciation of our native names, this palagi is well aware of our Tuaā (Ancestors) and their skillful capabilities. “Mosooi brings great hope to American Samoa in more ways than one”

The Mosooi Festival started in the early 90s by a few visionaries that felt the need to create a celebration for its people residing in American Samoa. Unfortunately, as the years passed, maintaining and funding this great event became a challenge and eventually, the festival altogether faded into oblivion.

By the grace of the gods that be, a new generation of young, ambitious and motivated individuals came together to revive the Mosooi festival we see today. Not only have they sparked an interest in the local community, their vision has been shared all over the world, thanks to the great works of their committee (volunteers) via media etc. Aside from this, they have reignited the flames in the hearts and souls of Samoans both in American Samoa and abroad. Their vision to create a platform to celebrate Samoan Cultural Arts & Humanities has opened the door to reveal the endless talents that consumes the shores of beautiful Tutuila.

This year, the Mossoi festival featured the opening night of free entertainment; a celebration of their community and the people of American Samoa. The second week included a Gala that displayed and showcased various local artists and their art work. On the third week of October, the Samoan cultural day and inaugural Siva competition was held at Malae o Le suigaula a Le atuvasa in Utulei. Here, High Schools from across the island competed in traditional and contemporary Siva Samoa. To wrap things up, this Saturday, the search is on to find who will be crowned the next Miss Mosooi (a scholarship pageant for young Samoan women). When a community aligns to a mission and cause, the results are priceless.

Moreover, the opportunity for this event to generate outside revenue for American Samoa is not a far fetched idea. This could possibly be a way for more folks to visit Samoa during the month of October and experience the many treasures American Samoa has to offer.

Special thanks to Am Samoa LT Gov for taking the initiative to invest in this years celebration, however, there is lots more to be done. A serious look at the Mosooi Festival as a liaison for tourism, could create opportunities for American Samoa ……in more ways than one ☝🏽

It is with great excitement that we announce the private screening of Taika Waititi’s latest production, “Next Goal Wins” with a meet and greet with the star behind it all, Jaiyah Lei Saelua

Leone American Samoa native, Jaiyah Saelua, is widely known as the first ever openly transgender woman and fa’afafine to compete in a Fifa World Cup qualifying match for men, she has become a global champion for the rights of transgender and fa’afafine athletes, and now - almost disbelievingly - finds her life portrayed in an upcoming Hollywood film, directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi, to be released next month.
The game remains her primary and abiding love.

We are excited to have her grace us with her presence, and look forward to sharing this moment with our local Bay Area community!
